The Brussels and District
Horticulture society met on Sept. 26
at 7:30 p.m. at the Brussels Library.
President Phyllis Mitchell
welcomed 24 members to the
meeting, which was hosted by Kathy
Workman and Joan Brewer. Jackie
Knop spoke about the Emerald Ash
Borer and the threat to our trees. She
then answered gardening questions
and offered helpful advice and
seasonal tips. Kathy thanked the
speaker. Phyllis thanked all who
helped with the Brussels Fall Fair
float and brought flowers and Doug
Marks for pulling it with the tractor.
The group received second prize
in that category and also the table
which showed antique gardening
tools. There was some discussion on
replacing the sign. Phyllis and
Debbie Seili will contact Barmy
Tech about more substantial material
and being able to see it coming and
going. Details will be at the next
meeting.
Debbie reported on the 140th
anniversary of the Village of
Brussels in July 2012. Members
were asked to share their thoughts
with Phyllis or Debbie. Colour
schemes for baskets and boxes next
year were discussed and the majority
preferred a variety of colours.
Everyone was reminded of the
next meeting on Nov. 29 at 6:30 p.m.
with a potluck supper meeting.
Members are to bring an unwrapped
gift, a potluck item and a guest. Judy
Hahn moved to adjourn and lunch
was served by the September
committee.
North Huron TownshipCouncillors decided to turn the other
cheek as it were in regards to
funding sites located outside their
municipal boundaries.
Councillors debated giving funds
to a group of Auburn residents that
were in the latter phases of having
playground equipment built near the
Auburn Community Hall – a
community centre located in Central
Huron.
Auburn, a village that spans three
different municipalities has many
problems related to the fact that they
are serviced by three different
governing bodies.
The group, called the Auburn
Playground Committee had troubles
convincing North Huron council
earlier in their fundraising efforts
because of some “historic problems”
that North Huron has with Central
Huron, according to councillorBrock Vodden. Their visit this timewas with the backing of both CentralHuron and Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh’s (ACW) municipal
bodies, as well as a Trillium Grant
for their project.
“I think that the whole council is
sympathetic to this and the other
problems Auburn faces because of
their location,” Vodden said. “The
difficulty here is historic. You may
call what’s happening here Central
Huron not playing nice in the
sandbox.”
Vodden explained that he was
referring to a past decision made by
Central Huron council of the day to
not put any finances into the Blyth
Community Centre several years
ago, despite 30 per cent of the
centre’s traffic being from the
Hullett ward.
“This is a point of principle, and
unfortunately, it’s affecting your
playground,” he said. “I’m reluctant
to put a nickel towards somethingthat is supporting a bad decision inCentral Huron.”Other councillors didn’t arguewith Vodden, but said that this was
about the playground equipment and
not the decision made by Central
Huron.
The group started their fundraising
less than a year ago with next to
nothing and have since nearly
funded the entire project and were
seeking money from North Huron to
help with maintenance and upkeep
costs.
Juanita Hamp, vice president of
the committee, stated that they had
already ordered the playground
equipment and that the money from
North Huron, if given, would go
towards repairing and repainting the
equipment that could be used on the
site as well as getting plaques to
recognize all the donors.
“I want to congratulate this group
on their headway,” Councillor
Bernie Bailey said. “They started inJanuary and have raised so muchmoney on their own in that shorttime.”“This group has worked very hard
doing the fundraising for this
project,” Councillor Ray Hallahan
said. “We have children going there,
we have received moneys fromCentral Huron for the Blyth Theatre, and I move that we do support it.”Hallahan stated that North Huronshould match ACW’s donation of
$2,000.
The motion was passed with
Vodden dissenting.
