(Denny Scott photo) Total receipts for Brussels Livestock for the week ending Sept. 30 were 2,599 cattle, 780 lambs and goats. On Tuesday fed steers and heifers sold steady. Choice steers and heifers sold $107 to $113.25. Second cut sold $100 to $106. Cows sold steady. On Thursday beef veal calves continued to trade at steady prices, while holstein veal calves sold $2 to $3 higher. Lambs and sheep sold steady. Goats sold under pressure. On Friday calves and yearlings sold on a very strong active trade. There were 119 steers on offer. Chris Smith of Brussels, consigned 40 steers averaging 1,509 lbs. selling for an average of $105.19 with one limousin steer weighing 1490 lbs. selling to Horizon Meat Packers for $113.25. Schmidtbrook Farms of Woodstock, consigned thirteen steers averaging 1,547 lbs. selling for an average of $104.78 with one blonde steer weighing 1,550 lbs. selling to Horizon Meat Packers for $108.75. Southlore Farms of Palmerston, consigned three red steers averaging 1,367 lbs. selling for $107.25. Earl Bennewies of Mitchell, consigned five steers averaging 1,322 lbs. selling for an average of $101.16 with one black steer weighing 1,475 lbs. selling to St. Helen’s Meat Packers for $107. Bernie Gowan of Allenford, consigned thirteen steers averaging 1,430 lbs. selling for an average of $105.14 with one limousin steer weighing 1,325 lbs. selling for $106.50. There were 91 heifers on offer. Leroy Weppler of Ayton, consigned four heifers averaging 1,184 lbs. selling for an average of $102.39 with one red heifer weighing 1,295 lbs. selling for $106.75. Larry Reinhart Sr. of Mildmay, consigned ten heifers averaging 1,160 lbs. selling for an average of $101.61 with one limousin heifer weighing 1,240 lbs. selling to Horizon Meat Packers for $105.75. There were 343 cows on offer. Export types sold $56.50 to $69.50; beef cows, $69 to $80; D1 and D2, $52 to $56; D3, $46 to $52; D4, $35 to $40. Joanne Lamb of Goderich, consigned four cows averaging 1,310 lbs. selling for an average of $70.60 with one black cow weighing 1,510 lbs. selling for $80. Les Falconer of Clinton, consigned three cows averaging 1,588 lbs. selling for an average of $69.57 with one black cow weighing 1,540 lbs. selling for $79.50. Beef sold $125 to $150 with sales to $166; good holstein, $120 to $130 with sales to $136; medium holstein, $100 to $120; heavy holstein, $110 to $120 with sales to $125. John Martin of Lucknow, consigned eight veal averaging 717 lbs. selling for an average of $131.27 with one limousin heifer weighing 805 lbs. selling for $166. Sheep sold $53 to $98 with sales to $120. Goats: kids sold $35 to $120 to $155 per head; nannies, $50 to $90 to $100 per head; billies, $250 to $300 to $350 per head. There are serious issues for rural Ontario as they head to the ballot box on election day. The Christian Farmers Federation of Ontario (CFFO) has a number of issues that we feel need to be addressed by our future government. The Christian Farmers strongly supports Environmental Goods and Services. We hope that our future government expands Alternative Land Use Services pilot projects in various regions of the province with various ecologies as the next step in establishing a long-term permanent program that recognizes and rewards the public goods provided by farmers. The Christian Farmers believes that there are areas that our future government should focus on in terms of land use in the province.
