family on the passing of Alice
Brothers. Alice had been living in
Stratford the past few years, but will
be remembered by her many
Brussels friends. She was a lovely
little lady who loved to play the
piano and be involved in the
community. Our sympathies to her
daughter Nancy and family.
Our condolences to the McClure
family on the passing of Glenn
McClure. He will be missed by his
wife Marg and children Barb, Marie,
Dave, Paul, Dan and Donna and
their families. Our sympathies to all.
Our condolences are extended to
the family of Nancy Currie on her
passing. She will be missed by her
partner Ken Graber and children Pat
and Dawn and families. Our
sympathies to all the families and
friends.
Enjoying a Klumper wedding in
New York City were George and
Jane Zwep and children Danica and
Randy. Jane flew to New York with
her nieces from Stratford on
Thursday and George and the
children made the12-hour drive
there on Friday. On Friday evening
they were treated to a welcome to
New York cocktail party at the
Hudson Hotel Library. The guests
did not have to pay for their drinks,
but they did find out the average
price for a drink, be it beer or a
Manhattan, was about $14 each.
Wow!
The families were staying at the
Hilton Hotel in Manhattan, right in
the middle of the city. They could
walk to everything they would want
to see. Saturday morning, they
walked to Central Park and went on
a double-decker bus tour. The
highlights of the tour included
seeing the Statue of Liberty, Ground
Zero, the Empire State Building,
Times Square, Rockefeller Center,
the Chrysler Building and Central
Park.
When it was time to leave for the
wedding on Saturday afternoon,
they tried to get a taxi cab. George
had never ridden in a taxi cab, so
this was going to be a first for him.
The first cab they hailed picked
them up, started to pull away, and
when Jane told him where they were
going, he immediately stopped and
said he would not take them there.
George had experienced a great 10-
foot ride in the cab. The next cab
also refused to take them to
Brooklyn, where the wedding was to
be held.
The other family members were
having the same problem so they
went to the Hotel concierge about
their dilemma. The concierge
arranged to get them a limo for the
journey and to everyone’s surprise,
when the white stretch limo pulled
up, the name of the limo company
was Klumper! What are the chances
of a Klumper Limo company
arriving to pick up 10 Klumper
family members for a Klumper
wedding! The family climbed inside
and thoroughly enjoyed their first
time ride in a limo! They arrived at
the My Moon Restaurant and during
a 20-minute gap in the rainfall, the
wedding ceremony for Katie
Klumper and Tim Crowell was
performed on the patio of the
restaurant. Katie is a niece of Jane’s
and lived in Vancouver until three
years ago, when she moved to New
York and met Tim. There were 170
attending the wedding and over 100
were from Canada. All of the
Klumper family men wore red
Canadian bowties for the festivities.
Jane reports it was a beautifully,
elegant wedding and she was
amazed by it all. It was an
unbelievable, high society wedding
they will always remember.
George and the kids left Sunday
morning for the drive home and Jane
stayed to enjoy the Happily Ever
After Brunch for the guests
remaining. Jane and her nieces from
Stratford flew back to Buffalo
and then made their way back to
their homes. George and kids
arrived home at 9:30 p.m. Sunday
evening and Jane made it home
three hours later at 12:30 a.m.
They report having a wonderful time
and maybe being just a little bit
tired!
The supper committee met at the
church on Thursday evening last
week. There is no “head” of the
supper committee but the plans are
still moving ahead for the annual
turkey supper on Nov. 2. Everything
has been ordered and those who are
in charge of an area e.g. take-out
area, must ensure they have
everything they need to accomplish
the job. The same applies for tables,
smorg table, dressing area, pie
cutting, turkey cutting, kitchen
cooking, etc.
Those in charge of an area, should
be available to do their set-up
Tuesday evening and bring friends
to help! Arrangements will be made
to have large items brought to the
arena on Tuesday evening for setup.
The cleaning of the supplies for the
supper and the kitchen is scheduled
for Monday, Oct. 24. Ladies are
asked to come, when able at 9 a.m.,
1 p.m. or 7 p.m. There will be a list
of jobs to be done and just stroke the
job off the list when accomplished.
Tuesday, Nov. 1, morning and
afternoon are always busy and help
is required for both times. Peeling,
dicing, slicing, mixing, requires lots
of hands to make the jobs go
quickly. The church requires “all
hands on deck”, men, ladies and
children, for Tuesday and
Wednesday for the supper to be
successful! The lists for the UCW
ladies have been prepared and you
will be called concerning your
contributions for the supper. Thanks
in advance to all for keeping the
tradition of the Walton Turkey
supper going.
The Walton Duff’s United Church
Cook Books are available from the
members. There are many recipes
from current and former members of
the church, as well as recipes
passed on by family members in
memory of loved ones. The book
was produced in recognition of the
church’s 150th anniversary, which
will be celebrated next year. We
encourage everyone to support the
church and have a wonderful
keepsake of Duff’s.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week to finish September are Tess
Wey and Gary Williamson. October
kicks off with Cindy Carter, Mary
Ann Grobbink, W. Doug Mitchell,
Annette McCutcheon, Helen Craig,
Gerry Rijkhoff, Campbell Wey,
Chris Blake, Chantelle den Dekker,
Melva Fraser, Hannah Nolan Slaght,
Ken Storey, Betty Newman and
Matt Shortreed. Happy birthday to
all!
After first stalling on a donation to
the Goderich and Area Tornado
Relief Fund, Central Huron has
agreed to donate $10,000 to the
fund.
Central Huron Council was
responding to a donation made late
last month by Ashfield-Colborne-
Wawanosh of the same amount. The
donation was authorized at Central
Huron’s Committee of the Whole
meeting on Sept. 29.
Earlier that month, Mayor Jim
Ginn said he was unsure of how
Central Huron should proceed in
donating to the fund, considering his
municipality was technically
affected by the tornado and the
donation could be considered a
donation to themselves.
Having said that, Ginn wanted to
see what kind of donation Ashfield-
Colborne-Wawanosh, another
affected municipality, would make
before Central Huron made its
move.
The Goderich and Area Tornado
Relief Fund is collecting money on
the promise from the Provincial
Government that funds will be
matched on a 2:1 basis. Meaning
that Central Huron’s $10,000
donation could be considered a
$30,000 total donation.
The funds have been authorized to
be drawn from the municipality’s
tax stabilization reserve, but they
cannot be fully authorized until
ratified by Central Huron Council at
its Oct. 11 meeting.
While there is a deadline for funds
to be donated that will be eligible to
be matched by the Provincial
Government, Central Huron CAO
Kevin McLlwain says the
municipality’s donation will meet
that deadline.
