Story of the night
The Ironmen just couldn’t beat the Kincardine Bulldogs’ defensive lines during a game on
Friday, Sept. 30. The visiting Bulldogs emerged with a 3-0 victory, marking the third straight
loss for the Ironmen on home ice. Oct. 1 was a different story, however, with the Ironmen
decimating the Goderich Sailors 8-0 at the Maitland Recreation Centre in Goderich. (Jim Brown

Ironmen continue
to struggle on home
ice, win away game
The Wingham Ironmen managed
a split in league games in the
Western Junior C Hockey League
last weekend. After being shut out 3-
0 by the Kincardine Bulldogs at the
North Huron Wescast Community
Complex on Friday evening, the
Ironmen managed an 8-0 decision
over the Goderich Sailors on
Saturday in Goderich.
The Ironmen offence continues to
struggle at home. The defeat Friday
evening was the third straight at the
complex with the Ironmen
managing just three goals in those
three games.
Coach Chad Haggitt of Blyth said,
regarding the three home losses, that
Walkerton was a good team.
“I though we played okay, we just
made a few mistakes and they
capitalized,” he said.
“Tonight, it was pretty tough to
beat the referee,” he said. “We never
got a chance, in the third period, to
get back into the game.”
The power play has been
struggling the past few games and
Haggitt said it is because the players
are squeezing their sticks a bit too
much. “We’ll keep working away at
it and it should come,” the coach
said.
While the Ironmen have been
unable to take advantage of a
manpower advantage, the Ironmen’s
penalty killing is doing a fine job. he
said they work on the penalty kill in
practice.
“We’ll just keep working at it,” he
said.
As far as the struggling offence
goes, Haggitt said they are not
looking for goal scorers and they are
satisfied with the players they
already have for the most part.
“We just have to get the guys
going,” he said. “Everybody’s
squeezing their sticks right now.
We’ll see what happens.”
Forward Cole Pellett of Bluevale
said the team is just not clicking
right now. “We can’t seem to buy
any goals,” he said. “We’re just not
clicking. It’ll come after a few
games, hopefully.”
He said the Ironmen gave a good
effort against the Bulldogs but it
wasn’t a great effort.
Pellett said he played all right, but
there was definitely room for
improvement. He said he had not a
bad game, but it was not a great
game.
The offence erupted for eight
goals Saturday evening, with five
goals coming in the third period.
Four players had three point
games. Dylan Williams had two
goals and one assist, Aaron
Armstrong and Tyler Kellum each
had a goal and two assists and Travis
Donaldson collected three helpers.
Wade Stephenson chipped in with a
pair of goals. Single markers were
added by Graham Ashcroft and Nic
Carter.
Matt Stirling made 27 saves to
record the shutout in the Wingham
net.
The Ironmen are on the road for a
pair of games this weekend. On
Friday, they travel to Hanover for an
8:30 p.m. game against the Barons
and on Saturday, they travel to
Kincardine for a 7 p.m. contest
against the Bulldogs.
