Walking for Hope Brussels and area residents pulled on their running shoes to raise money for the Habitat for Humanity build in Brussels on Saturday Oct. 1 with the Henry Exel Walk for Hope. The walk, which served as a fundraiser for the build, was held in memory of Exel who passed away in a vehicle collision last year. Exel’s dream was to have the next Huron County Habitat for Humanity build in Brussels. When you wake you need to put your nose right outside to see if it’sshorts or long underwear you should be wearing that day. So mitts were in order on Saturday morning for the Habitat for Humanity walk. A small but committed crowd had a pleasant but windy stroll, starting at the ball park, up past the arena, a tour of the house that love built, on to the dam, past the firehall, around the library, on to the school, back to Turnberry Street and return to the Optimist house where the Lion’s Club offered nourishment to the supporters. The evening began with the Commanders inspecting the secretary’s records, the financial statements, the poppy books and the lottery account books. The general meeting then began with President Deb Caan presiding over the meeting. Comrade Jo-Ann McDonald filled in as secretary for the absent Comrade Sandra Josling. President Deb introduced Zone Commander Andy Rogers from Wingham and Deputy Zone Commander Larry Bailey from Exeter. The meeting proceeded in its usual manner. Committee reports were heard from Comrade Andy Overholt and he gave a positive Nevada report. Veterans Service Officer Comrade Mabel Glanville reports appointments for Randy Groundwater must be made as soon as possible. Canteen Chairman Comrade Eric Ross reports that the ice machine cannot be fixed in Brussels and will have to be taken to Kitchener for repairs. Sports Chairman Comrade Rick McDonald attended the Zone Sports meeting and Brussels will host the Zone Team Darts in November. House Chairmen Andy Adams and Glenn Bridge have completed some repairs around the Branch. The meeting was addressed Continued on page 9
