Then the children had a front row seat for the baptism of Brook Christine Bergsma, daughter of Grant and Sandy. She accepted quietly being the centre of attention and quite enjoyed her walk about the sanctuary with Terry to greet everyone. A large number of her extended family members were also on handto witness Brook’s acceptance intothe family of faith. Through her baptism Brook can be assured of God’s spirit working in her life. Kerri Grant was organist for the morning service. Flowers on the memorial stand were in loving memory of Darlene Vincent (Bromley). The Minute for Missions was titled Ecumenical Accompaniment. The World Council of Churches have personnel in war-torn Palestine who watch and record the atrocitiesthat befall persons there so the worldwill know of them. Money donated to the United Church of Canada’s Mission and Service fund work to see that the real life stories of people there are not forgotten or covered up. The responsive reading was Psalm 78. The scripture passage was Exodus 17: 1-7. In these verses we learn that the Israelites have moved from the shores of the Red Sea and are encamped in a dry area with no water. They complain to Moses who seeks help from God. With his rodMoses brings water from a rock inHoreb. Terry Fletcher remarked that throughout the Old Testament the Israelites seem to be complaining folk, always making sure God was living up to the terms of His covenant with them. Today there are many who are wandering with dryness of spirit; who are thirsty for God’s spirit in their lives. For us church is an oasis of peace and we need to help others find this peace. Understandably Christians find spirituality in other places – nature, a sense of satisfaction, singing, using God-given talents, etc. Activities in a church setting can bring those same feelings of spirituality to others. They need to understand that life is fuller with the refreshment of spirit. Jesus Christ came for everyone and Christians need to bring this spirituality to the community.
