Walkerton, reigning champs, trounce Ironmen 5-1
Sports
The Wingham Ironmen got
outplayed by the four-time
defending Western Junior C Hockey
League champions Friday evening at
the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex. The result
was a 5-1 victory for the Walkerton
Hawks.
The Hawks capitalized on the
power play at 4:49 of the first period,
when Andy Mitchell scored to give
Walkerton a 1-0 lead.
Two second period goals by Drew
Davidson gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead
after two periods of play.
Early third period goal by Eric
Lekun and Jordan Turcotte, on the
power play, gave the Hawks a 5-0
lead.
With 1:02 left in the game, Drew
Shantz scored for the Ironmen,
spoiling the shutout bid of Walkerton
goaltender Jeff Flagler. Aaron
Armstrong and Brett Brophy
received assists.
Coach Chad Haggitt of Blyth said
it was not a very good game.
However, he added, there were some
positives to be taken from the
game. “It was not all negative,” he
said.
It is still early in the season,
Haggitt said and Walkerton is the
four-time defending champion.
“We couldn’t get many shots on
goal,” he said.
Forward Evan Ducharme of
Brussels said the Ironmen got
outplayed. “We took the positives
away from the game,” he said.
He said the Ironmen are a “work in
progress” and it will get the rest of
the season to there. “It’s a tough
season,” he said.
The Ironmen have two games this
weekend. The Ironmen play the
Kincardine Bulldogs on Friday at the
North Huron Wescast Community
Complex, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
The Ironmen travel to Goderich on
Saturday for an 8 p.m. contest
against the Sailors.

With the arrival of fall, action
slowed down a little at the Wingham
Golf and Curling Club but overall it
was a busy week.
The club champions were decided
this month with Linda Walker
repeating as ladies champion and
Sylvia Pewtress winner of senior
ladies. Don Bone continued his hot
play winning both the overall club
championship as well as the senior
championship.
On Wednesday, Sept. 21 18 senior
men hit the links on a great golfing
day. Wayne Gordon took home first-
place honours with Barry Simpson,
second and Glenn McMichael, third.
Bill Brown was winner of the
longest putt prize.
The Thursday night men again
took advantage of a beautiful fall
night as 48 golfers came eager to
play. Dennis Knox fired a superb 36
for low gross honours followed by
Don Bone at 37.
The closest to the pin winners
were Ed Collinson and Gerry
Edwards while Paul Dietz, Ross
Peacock and Knox claimed longest
putt awards. Hidden score winners
were Don Watson, Russ Taylor and
Doug Vanderwoude. This coming
Thursday, Sept. 29 is three-club
night as all participants are only
allowed three clubs including the
putter which along with a lighter
golf bag adds a lot of different shots
and many laughs.
Saturday the club hosted two
annual golf tournaments. John
Soers’ group got the day off to a
great start with 24 golfers out for a
fun day of golf followed by lunch on
the patio. The Upper Deck Youth
Group enjoyed a sunny afternoon
with 20 golfers playing 18 holes
before getting together in the dining
lounge for a roast beef supper. The
club always enjoys the company of
both the groups and look forward to
seeing them to kick off the fall.
OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS
The club is still anticipating great
weather for the fall and have a busy
schedule the first week of October.
Ladies closing super is Oct. 4 with
the senior men closing lunch the
next day followed by Thursday
men’s and the final wing of the year
on Friday, Oct. 7.

Lightning
beats Rangers
The Saugeen Maitland Midget AA
Lightning edged the Kitchener
Rangers 2-1 in preseason Lower
Lakes action last weekend.
Saugeen held a 2-0 lead late in the
game until Kitchener scored a power
play goal in the third period to make
it close. A couple of solid saves by
Stephanie Sluys and good penalty
killing in the final two minutes
preserved the one goal victory for
the Lightning.
Scoring for the Bolts were Dolle
Meigs and Laura Irwin, while
Hannah Davidson and Lindsay
Dales picked up assists.
