Strategic plan meet to be held
The community consultation
phase of North Huron’s strategic
planning process is underway. Last
Thursday, the first of three public
meetings was held in Blyth at the
new Emergency Services Training
Centre (ESTC).
This Thursday evening (Sept. 22),
there will be a public meeting in
East Wawanosh at the Belgrave
Community Centre. Next Monday,
Sept. 26, a public meeting will be
held in Wingham at the Columbus
Centre. Other roundtable
discussions have been set up with
specific stakeholder groups
including service providers and non-
profit agencies, youth and
businesses.
In addition to meetings with local
residents and stakeholders, every
resident will receive a citizen survey
in the mail over the next two weeks.
The survey can also be completed
online at www.northhuron.ca.
Residents are encouraged to
complete and return the survey by
Friday, Oct. 21.
“We want to make sure that every
North Huron resident has an
opportunity to take part in this
process, whether it’s completing a
survey or attending a public meeting
in their community,” said
CAO/Clerk Gary Long. “It’s
important that our strategic plan
reflect the values, goals and
priorities of our residents and we
look forward to their participation
and input.”

The students viewed the “Power
of One” presentation at Hullett
Central Public School last Friday
and learned how you can make a
difference and stop bullying
problems. The power of one means
you are the change that you want to
see in the world. The power of one
dares you to step up to the plate and
stop all types of bullying.
Mikayla, Hunter, Kaeden, Tanner,
Madison, Lexus, Amber, Caden and
Louis all survived their first day of
Kindergarten this week. They have
been on fun adventurous activities
like autumn walks to learn more
about fall and have been learning
about bears, especially the black
bear, because it represents
Blyth Public School and we
are the Bears.
The senior kindergarten students
have been studying the book I Went
Walking by Sue Williams. They
discussed their summer vacations
and all the sights and sounds and
smells they experienced as they
walked about. They went on a tour
of the school and wrote about the
things they saw in our school. They
have been completing cut and paste,
flannel retell, puppetry, printing,
puzzles and magnetic letter literary
centres focused upon elements
discussed within the book.
The Grade 1/2 students enjoyed
the School Fair on Sept. 14 and
demonstrated great marching skills
as they led the school kids in the
parade. They had great fun making
the banner to highlight the Blyth
Bears by creating bear paws and
wearing bear hats.
The Grade 2 students have been
learning about “Things that good
readers do before, during and after
they read” in order to be successful.
In math, they have been reviewing
some addition strategies and using
mental math skills. Other interesting
things going on are learning more
about each other through games and
activities that help build a positive
classroom community.
All of Mrs. Zembashi’s health
classes are learning about healthy
foods and exercises and how that
help us to have energy the body
needs. They are also learning that
you need to make healthy choices so
you don’t hurt your body.

The Grade 6, 7 and 8 students are
researching an item that was at the
Thresher Reunion and are
comparing it to a similar item of
today. Their next step will be to
research four different types of
governments and compare them and
also taking a closer look at the
platforms of the current provincial
parties. This is all in anticipation of
the upcoming election, when they
will be taking part in a mock
election with hundreds of other
students in Ontario.
The Grade 6/7 class is working on
their 2X tables; as Ms Badham sees
that this is necessary. Ms Badham is
hoping to have the band up and
running by the end of the month and
will be recruiting new and returning
musicians shortly.
Wow, the Thresher Reunion was
incredible! Classes had a blast
seeing the old antique steam engines
and learning about how things were
before their time. Students also got
to check out the animal tent and had
fun playing with the guinea pigs and
baby bunnies.
The Grade 8 fundraiser booth was
a huge success. The Grade 8 class
had a chili booth at the reunion and
raised money towards their year-end
trip. They sold almost 60 pies and 10
pots of chili.
Facilities work is waiting to begin
at three Avon Maitland District
School Board (AMDSB) schools.
Phase three of renovations at
Clinton Public School is on hold
until project partner, the Ministry of
Children and Youth Services gives
final approval. Hugh Cox,
information and reporting analyst,
told trustees at the board’s Sept. 13
meeting that the project will
hopefully go to tender in November.
At South Huron District High
School (SHDHS), renovations to
prepare the west wing on the second
floor for Grade 7 and 8 students
probably won’t go to tender until
later this fall. The board is waiting
to hear feedback from the school on
the design work.A sked if the delay
would affect the transition of the
Grade 7 and 8 students in 2012, Cox
said that the space is ready for
renovation and work could be
completed during the school year.
Asked if that would affect current
SHDHS students, Cox said the
future Grade 7/8 wing could be
isolated so that current students
would not be bothered by the
construction.
The first phase of the multi-phase
Listowel District Secondary School
(LDSS) renovation is being
finalized. Cox expects major
renovations to begin in the spring,
with little or no work being done
while LDSS students are in the
building.
Work at LDSS for the first phase
includes reorganization of the
administration and guidance areas,
some work on the cafeteria to
relieve “some fire code issues there”
and the creation of a staff lounge to
make space for a servery.
Work this summer was completed
at Central Huron Secondary School,
including the removal of some
mechanical systems and ductwork
insulation, pump replacements, a
lighting upgrade and some asbestos
removal.
