Ironmen split weekend games
While the Hanover Barons, shown here, got the better of the Wingham Ironmen, beating them
5-2 despite a home-ice advantage on Sept. 16, the Ironmen were able to bounce back,
beating the Kincardine Bulldogs 2-1 in Kincardine on Sept. 20. (Jim Brown photo)
Ironmen breakeven over weekend
The Wingham Ironmen only
scored four goals in two weekend
games, but they managed a split in
their two Western Junior C Hockey
League contests to improve to 2-1.
After losing 5-2 to the Hanover
Barons on Friday at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex, the
Ironmen scored a 2-1 decision over
the Kincardine Bulldogs on Saturday
evening in Kincardine.
On Friday evening, Hanover held a
2-1 advantage before the game was
five minutes old. Dylan Cooper gave
the Barons a 1-0 lead at 2:23 and
Brad Pitt made it 2-0 at 3:09.
Wade Stephenson scored a
beautiful unassisted marker at 4:22
to put the Ironmen down by one.
Cole Pellett scored an unassisted
shorthanded goal at 7:18 of the
second period to even the score at
two. Pitt scored a power play marker
at 8:05 to give the Barons a 3-2 lead.
Haden Campbell and Jacob
Brown, with a shorthanded empty
net marker scored in the third period
for the Barons. After going 3-3 on
the power play in the previous
week’s game against Mount Forest,
the Ironmen power play struggled
against the Barons, going 0-10.
Coach Chad Haggitt of Blyth said
the Barons outworked the Ironmen
in the game on Friday. “We got away
from what worked for us,” he said.
The coach said Hanover trapped
and the Ironmen were unable to get
up the ice as much as they wanted to.
As far as the power play went,
Haggitt said the Ironmen were
moving the puck too slow.
“We are going to have to work on
our power play, penalty kill and five-
on-five at the next practice,” he said.
“We need to work on all aspects of
the game.” He added that they are
hoping everything gets better as the
season progresses. With Walkerton
coming in this weekend,
Haggitt is hoping the Ironmen
can use their game plan
against the defending league
champions.
Defenceman Cody Subject of
Brussels said it was a rough game
out on the ice. “They had a 2-0 lead
and we were outshot 6-0 before we
knew it,” he said.
He said the Ironmen were hoping
for a better result than the 5-2
setback.
The Ironmen were 0-15 on the
power play against the Bulldogs on
Saturday evening.
Steve Kerr scored a shorthanded
goal at 16:57 of the third period to
give the Ironmen the 2-1 decision
over Kincardine. Justine Jacklin
earned the assist.
Aaron Armstrong scored at 17:44
of the middle period to even the
score at one. Shawn Stewart scored
at 12:42 of the first period for
Kincardine.
Wingham outshot the Bulldogs
49-23.
The Ironmen play one game this
weekend. Walkerton comes to the
Complex on Friday for a 7:30 p.m.
contest against the Ironmen.

Chip and a Putt – By Bruce Skinn
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club enjoyed another good week
despite the early arrival of fall
temperatures. The course is in great
shape and many of the members are
not near ready to put their clubs
away.
On Wednesday, Sept. 14 the
senior morning men had 16 golfers
hit the links. Harry George took
home low net honours with Gerry
Edwards finishing second and Brian
Skinn in third. Doug Vanderwoude
shot a good round of 40 for low
gross followed by George with a 41.
All the guys wish league organizer
Bill Johnston a speedy recovery and
look forward to seeing him back at
the course.
The Thursday men had 36 golfers
play in less-than-stellar conditions
due to a cold east wind. A lot of
these dedicated guys will play until
the snow flies, so this was a great
night for golf. Mark Hackett and
Bill Robinson both shot solid
rounds of 38 to share low gross for
the night. Other winners were:
longest putts, Richard Watson, Bill
Kerr and Terry Armstrong; closest to
the pin, Colin Becker and hidden
scores, Harry George and Richard
Inglis.
On Saturday, Sept. 17 the club
hosted the “Grumpy Old Men”
tournament in honour of the late Al
Godfrey and Brian Marston. Over
60 family and friends got together
for nine holes of golf before joining
in the golf lounge for supper. It was
sure great to see all the children at
the course and the smiles from all
the generations of the families.
On Sunday the club hosted its
ninth annual fall barbecue. Over 450
hungry members and guests enjoyed
a ham and beef barbecue, courtesy
of Jeff Cardiff’s catering.
OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS
This past week the Wingham Golf
and Curling Club was again
honoured to hold a golf tournament
in memory of two past members
Brian Marston and Al Godfrey. With
all ages of golfers taking part in this
event the memories of Al and Brian
will last a very long time.
So close, yet so far
The Brussels Tigers nearly made it to the finals of the Huron
County Fastball League year end tournament, but were put
out by the tournament champions, the Walton Brewers.
