Walton Brewers take top HCFL spot in tournament
The Walton Brewers are the Huron
County Fastball League champions
for 2011.
It took them two games to get past
the Exeter Braves in the
championship final. Walton was
undefeated while the Braves had lost
one game in the double knockout
tournament played in Brussels on the
weekend.
After dropping an 8-5 decision in
game one, the Brewers rebounded in
game two to post a 9-3 victory and
the league title.
Player coach Paul Dolmage said
the key to the team’s success on the
weekend was having a full roster and
having everyone taking part.
“We received good pitching,” he
said. “Scott Leonhardt and Jeff
Smith both provided us with
excellent pitching.”
He added that the hitters of the
weekend were Barry Young and
Jamie Wick.
Wick hit a homerun for the
Brewers in the team’s 9-3 decision
over Exeter. Jeff Robinson and
Leonhardt had two singles apiece for
Walton. Rapping out one single
apiece were Ron Strome, Young,
Adam Verkley and Bruce Pearn. Jeff
Smith posted the win on the mound.
In game one of the final, Young
had a single and a homerun as the
Brewers fell 8-5. Wick had two
singles and a double while Verkley
and Pearn each hit a pair of singles.
Leonhardt had a double with Smith
and Strome getting one single
apiece. Leonhardt took the loss on
the mound.
The Brewers began the
tournament with a 5-2 decision over
the Goderich Grizzlies. Leonhardt
hit a pair of doubles for Walton in
that game with Strome and Smith
getting one double apiece. Smith had
the win on the mound.
The Brewers then met the Brussels
Tigers and scored a 10-3 decision.
Young had a homerun a single and
three runs batted in for Walton.
Verkley scored two runs as he
walked once and singled. Smith and
Leonhardt shared mound duty.
For Brussels, Gene Johnston had a
homerun and a single. Doug Shaw
hit a double and Brian McArter
rapped out a single.
Ty Sebastian and Shawn Daw both
saw action on the mound.
The win put Walton into the
championship final against the
Braves and the loss put Brussels into
the B-side final against Exeter.
Exeter scored an 8-3 victory to
advance to the championship final
against the Brewers.
Sebastian had a homerun and
single for the Tigers and Johnston
connected for a homerun in a losing
effort. Corey Campbell had three
singles and adding single base hits
were Daw, Andrew Baker and
McArter.
Daw and Sebastian were both on
the mound. Coach Murray
Kellington said the Tigers played as
a team. “We received excellent
pitching,” he said.
He added that the players were
able to pick each other up when they
got down during a game.
Brussels started the tourney with a
5-0 decision over the Wroxeter
Rippers.
Sebastian recorded a dozen
strikeouts as he posted the win on
the mound. He was also 2-3 at the
plate with an RBI. Johnston was also
2-3 at the plate and scored three
runs. Shaw had a double and two
RBIs with McArter also getting two
RBIs. Andrew Baker hit a triple and
Jason Kellington had a double.
The Tigers overcame a seven-run
deficit against the Exeter Braves,
rallied to post a 9-8 victory.
Johnston had two doubles and a
single while Shaw and Kellington
each had a double and a single.
Adam Corbett rapped out a pair of
singles while Sebastian, Daw,
McArter, Campbell and Mike
Watson added one single each.
The win put Brussels into the A-
side final against the Walton
Brewers.
The Blyth Barons did not fare well
in the tournament, managing just a
single win in the three games
they played.
The Barons opened the
tournament against the Exeter
Braves and were handed an 8-4
setback.
The Barons then played the
Goderich Grizzlies and scored an 8-
6 victory.
Chris Stewart hit a homerun and
double in a winning effort. Shawn
Bromley had a homerun and single.
Mike Kerr had a triple and two
singles, while Mike McDonald
rapped out a pair of singles. Single
base hits were added by Darcey
Cook and Devin Johnston.
The Barons then fell 10-6 to the
Fullarton A’s in a game played
Saturday evening in Ethel.
Stewart had a triple, double and
single, with Johnston getting a triple.
Kerr hit a double while McDonald
and Dana Doherty rapped out two
singles apiece. Mike Bromley
contributed a single
Player-coach McDonald said the
Barons received good pitching and
had good hitting. “The guys gave it
their all through the tournament,” he
said. He added that they wish they
could have done better. “Maybe next
year,” he said.
