Several presentations were focused
on the tornado that devastated
Goderich on Aug. 21 at the Sept. 7
session of Huron County Council,
the first since the disaster.
The meeting, which was held at the
Jacob Memorial Building in Clinton,
began with Warden Neil Vincent’s
remarks.
Vincent said the first he heard
about the tornado was shortly after 4
p.m. that day.
“I was told Goderich had been hit
by a tornado and it’s bad,” he said.
Vincent, on behalf of Huron
County, thanked all nine
municipalities for sending staff,
emergency personnel and any kind of
help they could spare.
Following Vincent’s remarks,
Huron County Community
Emergency Management Co-
ordinator (CEMC) Gary Wood gave
council a presentation on the
tornado. His presentation included
the moments leading up to the
tornado warning and some statistics
on the tornado itself.
Wood said he and the Huron
County staff worked very closely
with staff from all of Huron’s nine
municipalities and not only was it a
relief, but it was a pleasure to work
with such excellent people.
Wood’s report, entitled “The F3
Tornado: August 21, 2011” gave an
overview of the entire incident, but
added that council would be
receiving comprehensive reports
from every Huron County
department very shortly.
“We want to tell you what we did,
how we did it and what we learned,”
Wood said.
Wood said the tornado included
winds that hit speeds between 254
and 332 kilometres per hour and
reached a width of between 200 and
500 metres, depending on where it
was and the conditions surrounding
it.
Under the scale which classified
the tornado that hit Goderich that day
as an F3, the Fujita Scale of Tornado
Intensity, the Aug. 21 tornado was
strong enough to lift the roofs off of
well-made houses, tear through brick
walls, lift cars off the ground and
twist skyscrapers, should Goderich
have had any.
Wood said the tornado’s path of
destruction ran for approximately 20
kilometres, starting off of Lake
Huron at the Sifto Salt Mine, through
Courthouse Square and continuing
through Ashfield-Colborne-
Wawanosh and then Central Huron
before dissipating before it reached
Clinton.
“The tornado couldn’t have done a
more straight line to go through the
centre of everything,” he said,
indicating that the tornado hit the salt
mine, then the town square, then
hitting several other large structures
before making its way through
Benmiller and the Benmiller Inn.
After Wood’s presentation,
Goderich Mayor Deb Shewfelt
thanked the people who helped his
town get through the disaster.
“I want to thank the county; we
wouldn’t have got through it without
you,” Shewfelt said. “Thanks to
every municipality for the support
we received and thanks to emergency
services personnel from Windsor to
London to Owen Sound for coming.”
“It’s been an interesting two
weeks,” he said.
Director of Social Services for
Huron County Dave Overboe
informed council that the courthouse
has been affected by asbestos, which
will delay its recovery slightly.
Overboe stated that engineers have
been through the building and have
declared it structurally sound, but
because there were small traces of
asbestos, the initial three-week
cleaning job could take as long as
four to six weeks.
Currently, he said, access to the
building is restricted and protective
suits have to be worn if entering the
building.
“It’s a big job,” Shewfelt added.
Huron East Mayor Bernie
MacLellan said that once the
recovery in Goderich is well on its
way and things have gotten back to a
relative level of normalcy, he thought
it would be helpful for councillors to
sit down with Shewfelt and staff
members who were first responders
to learn from the experience.
Shewfelt agreed it would be
helpful to spend a half-day going
over what happened.
