The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club started the month of September
on a busy note. On Friday, Sept. 2
the club held another successful
monthly wing night. Cheryl and her
staff cooked up around 800 tasty
wings.
On Sunday a group of around 30
from Zehrs in Listowel got together
at the club to play nine holes of golf
before joining together to enjoy the
view from the patio.
On Wednesday, Sept. 7 the club
hosted its annual John Mallick
Memorial Senior Tournament. Don
Bone from the Wingham Golf Club
shot a tidy 75 to claim the trophy and
overall winner. Rod McKenzie and
Norm McLennan, both from
Listowel were the low gross winners
in the other two divisions.
All three low net division winners
came out of the Wingham Club
with Bob Johnston (50-59),
Art Devos (60-69) and Gerry
Edwards (70+) taking home
honours.
The 54 golfers had a great day for
golf before getting together for a
steak supper in the dining lounge.
John’s daughter Donna Anderson
was on hand to present the trophy to
Don Bone.
The Thursday night men again had
a terrific night for golf. Doug
Reinhardt was presented a hat from
organizer Bill Kerr for becoming the
1,000 golfer this year on Thursday
men’s night. The 55 golfers enjoyed
the great playing conditions and Dan
McBurney was hot shooting his best
round of 36 for low gross honours.
Other winners were: closest to the
pin, Derreck Connors and
Gord Harris while longest putt
prizes went to Doug Neil,
Gerry Edwards and Joe O’Rourke.
Hidden score winners were Bob
Johnston, Derrick Gamble and Ron
Buchanan.
On Saturday the club hosted the
Brett Cameron Memorial
Tournament. This group of 50 close
friends and family members get
together to honour the memory of
Brett. The guys and gals played nine
holes of golf before a barbecue steak
and chicken supper. This year’s
winning team was Heather Mill,
Lynn Voung, Brian Mill and Bill
Kinahan.
This coming Sunday, Sept. 18 the
Wingham Golf and Curling Club is
holding its nine annual fall barbecue
between 5 - 7 p.m.
OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS
This past week the club was proud
to host tournaments in memory of
two former members and super
volunteers John Mallick and Brett
Cameron. Both gone but never
forgotten.

Ironmen double Mount Forest in season openerThe Wingham Ironmen opened
the 2011-2012 Western Junior C
Hockey League season at home last
Friday evening and after struggling
for the first two periods, they
doubled up the Mount Forest
Patriots 6-3.
Wade Stephenson and Tyler
Kellum had two goals and one assist
apiece to lead the offence for the
Ironmen. Single goals were added
by Blair Goss and Steve Kerr. Aaron
Armstrong had four assists and
Graham Ashcroft collected two
assists.
Mount Forest opened the scoring
at 1:37 of the first period as Nathan
Woodard found the twine behind
Wingham netminder Brandon
MacDonald.
Goss tied the score at 4:54 on the
power play. Just over six minutes
later, Stephenson gave the Ironmen
the lead on the power play. Tevin
Sallans evened the count at two at13:46. With 16 seconds left in theperiod, Kellum scored on the powerplay to give the Ironmen a 3-2
advantage.
Stephenson scored the loan goal
of the middle period at 8:59 to give
the Ironmen a two-goal advantage.
Wingham outscored Mount Forest
2-1 in the third period to reach the
final score.
Coach Chad Haggitt of Blyth said
it was a good game for the first game
of the season. “The first game is
always a tough one,” he said.
The Ironmen power play was
clicking as three of the team’s six
goals were scored with the man
advantage.
“We worked on our power play
last week in practice,” Haggitt said.
“I hope it keeps clicking.”
According to Haggitt, the new
players are fitting in and all the
players are working well together.
“They are a good group of players
and everyone is getting along,” he
said.Stephenson of Brussels will keepplaying the physical game, but willbe scoring more goals this season.
“They know I can score and I
know I can score goals,” he said. “I
will keep playing the physical game,
I will just stay away from the dirty
stuff.”
He said it was nice to open the
season with a win and get the two
points.
According to Stephenson,
everyone thinks the Ironmen are not
going to be strong this season.
“We’re going to hold our own
against the other teams in the
league,” he said.
The Ironmen are at home on
Friday as they host the Hanover
Barons at the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex beginning at
7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Ironmen
travel to Kincardine for a 7 p.m.
contest against the Bulldogs.

Brewers win last season game
Three runs in the bottom of the
sixth inning helped the Walton
Brewers defeat the Wroxeter
Rippers by a score of 6-3 in Huron
County Fastball League play last
Wednesday at the Walton ball park.
The Rippers only had nine
players, including coach Buck
Hamilton who played first base.
The Brewers used three pitchers in
the game. Blaine Marks started and
was relieved by Scott Cox. Scott
McDonald hurled the last two
innings and collected the win.
McDonald paced the offence with
a triple and two singles. Kevin
Murray contributed a triple.
Rapping out single base wins were
Cox, Ron Strome, Jamie Wick and
Adam Verkley.
Player coach Paul Dolmage said
they were finally able to pull out the
victory. “We struggled at the plate,”
he said. “We weren’t hitting the ball
well and when we did we weren’t
able to capitalize with runs.”
The Brewers will play the Rippers
or the Sebringville Juniors in their
first game of the year-end
tournament scheduled for Brussels
on Sept. 16-18.
