Squirts beat Priceville, named WOAA Major Champs
The Brussels Jr. Tiger Squirt Team
capped off a near-perfect season
with an exciting 6-5 extra inning win
in game number three of the WOAA
Major Championship on Sept. 7.
Brussels faced off against
Priceville for a “Best of Five” series
to decide the 2011 Championship.
Game one saw the Tigers win at
home 7-0 in a competitive game.
Brussels then travelled to Priceville
for game two and came away with a
decisive 16-2 win. Game three was a
different story, where Priceville
fielded a very strong team that
played solid defence shutting down
the Brussels batting line-up. Pitcher
Wyatt Machan held the Priceville
squad to a few runs but the visitors
were able to keep ahead of the
Tigers for most of the game.
In the first extra inning both teams
scored forcing a second extra inning.
Machan pitched brilliantly in the
second extra inning giving up no
runs. Brussels answered back by
loading the bases and Dylan McNeil
drove in Jake Mitchell from third
base with a hard shot down the third
base line. With the timely hit, the
Tigers became WOAA Champions.
By never playing in the WOAA
and not knowing the level of
competition, the coaching staff of
Gary Pipe, Jeff Newell and Scott
Johnson set some early season goals
of winning a few games. The season
that followed exceeded those goals
when the team never gave up a loss
through the regular season, and only
a single two-run loss in the 11-game
playoff format. The Tigers fielded a
balanced team with a pitching staff
who gave up very few runs. In all,
Brussels sent six pitchers to the
mound over the course of the
season. Machan, Logan Kellington,
Jack Pipe, Jessica Johnston, McNeil
and Jarron Thompson all had a
chance to pitch in games.
Defensively, Bennett Newell,
Nolan Johnston and Mitchell Ward
spent time behind the plate. Connor
Bridge, Jake Mitchell, Connor
denDekker, held down a variety of
spots defensively and cashed in
crucial RBIs during the season and
throughout the playoffs. Each
player made a difference this season,
whether blasting home runs, stealing
bases, making timely hits, covering
up on throws and fielding well, the
team was balanced and worked
together to come away as
champions.
The support of the community
was greatly appreciated. The final
game saw standing room only on a
cold windy night at the Optimist
Ball Park. It meant a lot to win the
championship at home in front of so
many dedicated parents and fans.
The team was treated to a ride on the
old fire truck by Jack McCutcheon
after the thrilling extra inning win.

Ty Sebastian threw a one-hitter
and recorded 10 strikeouts as the
Brussels Tigers defeated the
Fullarton A’s 7-0 in Huron County
Fastball League play on Sept. 7 at
the Optimist ball park in Brussels.
Sebastian helped his cause at the
plate with a double and single.
Rapping out one single apiece were
Gene Johnston, Brian McArter,
Shawn Daw, Corey Campbell and
Brody TenPas.
Doug McArter said the Tigers
played well in the game. “We were
able to snap a five-game losing
streak,” he said. He also indicated
the team fielded the ball well.
The win will help the Tigers as
they prepare for the year-end
tournament which is being played in
Brussels Sept. 16-18.
“We were finally able to pull out a
win,” McArter said. “The win should
clinch third place for us.”
