Even with eight to 10 new faces in the lineup, head coach Chad Haggitt of Blyth said the team could be as forceful this season as they were in the 2010-11 season when they finished second in the seven-team Western Junior C Hockey League, behind the Walkerton Hawks. “We look pretty good right now,” the coach said at a team practice last Wednesday evening at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex. “we are a pretty good team.” “We’re hoping to be as strong as we were last season,” he said. The Ironmen were scheduled to compete in four pre-season exhibition games, but one was cancelled. The Ironmen won the three games they did play. There are going to be a few players from Brussels and Blyth with the Ironmen again this year. Players signed already include Wade Stephenson, Cody Subject and Evan Ducharme from Brussels and Cole Pellett from Bluevale. The Ironmen have signed 15 players so far so they are looking for players to round out the roster. There are great players to choose from. “I am looking forward to the coming season,” Haggitt said. He said it will be good to get the season going. “It could be fun,” he said. Haggitt is the head coach with Todd Bender of Listowel being an assistant coach. Evan Zinn of Wingham has the dual role of assistant coach/trainer. Louie Livingston of Listowel is the general manager with Doug Kellum of Listowel serving as his assistant. The 2011-12 season kicks off for the Ironmen on Friday, when they host the Mount Forest Patriots at 7:30 p.m. at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex. The Ironmen play a 36-game schedule, playing each other team in the league six times – three at home and three away. Gene Johnston rapped out a pair of singles for the Tigers, with Ty Sebastian and Corey Campbell each getting a double. Jamie Hickling, Shawn Johnston and Shawn Daw each collected a single in a losing effort. Sebastian started on the mound for the Tigers with Daw taking over in relief. Veteran player Doug Shaw said Wingham was hitting the ball well. “They were hitting the holes,” he said. According to Shaw, Brussels played well defensively. “We just couldn’t hit the ball when we needed to,” he said. The Tigers hosted the Fullarton A’s on Wednesday in a make-up game from Aug. 19. Game results were not available at press time. The year-end league playoff tournament will be played Sept. 16- 18 in Brussels.
