Member of the Order of Canada
and Juno Award winner Carroll
Baker will be in Wingham for a
show on Sept. 24 where she hopes to
raise funds for the Goderich Tornado
Disaster Relief Fund.
Baker’s show at the Wingham
Heritage Theatre, however, has not
been without its controversy.
After the tragic events of Aug. 21
in Goderich, it was suggested to
Baker that she should contribute a
portion of her ticket sales from that
show to aid in the rebuilding of
Goderich in the wake of the tornado.
It was suggested, on Baker’s
Facebook page, that she donate $1
from each ticket sold to aid
Goderich in its recovery from the
deadly tornado. That suggestion,
however, sparked some debate,
where Baker was accused of trying
to attract more patrons to her concert
by using the disaster as a ploy.
Baker says this couldn’t be further
from the truth, saying “this is not
about me” and that she was simply
trying to do something good to aid
those devastated by the tornado.
After some thinking, Baker
devised her own scenario for the
Sept. 24 concert where she would
encourage anyone coming to the
show to donate as much as they were
able to the fund, while at the same
time, she would make her own
personal donation to help Goderich
and its people.
Baker says this method will stand
to raise more money for the town. “I
am certain it would be a more
sizeable amount than the $1 per
person scenario.
“This is simply a vehicle to help
people donate to this worth cause,”
Baker said. “I would never want to
be in that position.”
Baker, originally from
Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, began
performing in the 1970s and has
continued touring to this day.
In addition to winning the Juno
Award for Country Female Vocalist
of the Year five times, Baker had her
own show on CBC in 1983 and was
a frequent guest on Tommy Hunter’s
show.
In 1992 Baker was inducted into
the Canadian Country Music Hall of
Fame and in 2009 she was made a
Member of the Order of Canada.
Baker’s concert at the Wingham
Heritage Theatre begins at 7 p.m. on
Sept. 24. Tickets are $30 each and
can be purchased by calling the
theatre’s box office at (519) 357-
4082 or toll-free at 1-866-357-4082.

as well as older firefighting gear,
will be on display.
The facility uses rainwater instead
of municipal water for all training
exercises and the newly-paved
parking lot will allow for a greater
water collection than the centre
previously had. It reuses all the
water possible.
Training exercises can be held in
the burn building, which is crafted
from shipping containers, and uses
theatrical smoke to insure a true
experience.
A propane course, the only of its
kind in Canada as far as Black
knows, is also available, and
important as the centre is neighbours
with one of Canada’s largest propane
companies.
Future plans for the site include a
train wreck simulation in conjuction
with Canadian National (CN) and
the recreation of the agricultural
rescue scenario once the fields
around the centre have been plowed.
Huron County Warden and North
Huron Reeve Neil Vincent stated
that he is very happy with the
project.
“I’m extremely proud, to put it in
short terms,” he said. “It’s great to
have a centre that will service most,
if not all of Southwestern Ontario
and beyond.”
Vincent stated that while there are
centres like Gravenhurst’s Industrial
Firefighting Training Centre, they
focus on full-time firefighters.
“Our centre will cater to the mass
of volunteer firefighters that are
around us,” he said. “It is a giant
step forward for the whole region,
not just the township and the
county.”
Vincent said that the centre will
also create jobs for the area, whether
they are directly related to the centre,
like trainers, or whether they are
through the service industries that
will receive a definite boost from the
centre’s trainees.

images, special orders can be made including any photo. There are approximately 20 of the
stock pennants left, being sold at $15, while the custom-made ones cost $20. (Denny Scott photo)
