The last first day
The Nesbitt family, including, from left, Marissa, Jeff, Brody and Kaila, made the walk to Blyth
Public School for the first day of school on Sept. 6. The Avon Maitland District School Board,
through the Accommodation Review process, has the school slated for closure after this
school year. Students from the area will either go to Hullett Central Public School, which may
be renamed, in Londesborough or the new Maitland River Elementary School in Wingham.

NEWS
FROM BLYTH
Tornado lands Rutledge in Blyth
Architect John Rutledge is
returning to his roots in light of his
office being rendered unusable due
to the tornado that devastated
Goderich.
Rutledge, originally from Brussels
and having lived in Blyth, is
returning to Blyth to open his office
at 406 Queen Street in Blyth while
Goderich’s downtown core is
assessed and eventually restored.
While Rutledge’s home in
Goderich is fine, his office, which is
near the corner of West Street and
the Square, was hit pretty hard.
“The third floor was hit bad,”
Rutledge said. “The ceiling is still
there, but the entire front wall on the
third floor is completely gone.”
Rutledge explained that the third
floor is the Masonic hall and
meeting lodge and that chairs from
the hall can be found scattered
around Courthouse Park and The
Square, including embedded in
trees.
Rutledge’s office, however, wasn’t
hit as hard as the top of the building.
“I had minimal water damage, but
paper and water don’t mix,” he said.
“And I can’t work without paper.”
Rutledge was allowed into his
office for an hour on Wednesday,
Aug. 24 and an hour and a half on
Saturday, Aug. 27 to retrieve his
essentials.
“I got all the computer
equipment,” he said. “It’s all been
hooked up and it’s running.”
Rutledge was one of the fortunate
individuals, however, as some
people were literally given mere
minutes to get into their buildings,
grab essential identification and
documents, and get out.
“The rest of the building, I’m not
sure about,” he said. “The primary
damage is to the third floor, but I
didn’t go there. The roof is still there
and seems intact, but you never
know when you’re looking from
the street.”
Rutledge feels lucky for having
been able to recover so much.
“I’m doing okay comparatively,”
he said. “There are a lot of people in
worse shape. I’m very fortunate, and
sad for everyone else.”
One of the major things Rutledge
was unable to get from his office
was his drawing board.
“It was just too heavy to move,”
he said. “It took four of us to get it
If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you
(J.C. Ryle)
“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you”John 15:7
To abide in Christ, means to keep up a habit of constant close communion with Him--
to be always... leaning on Him, resting on Him, pouring out our hearts to Him, and
using Him as our Fountain of life and strength--as our chief Companion and best
Friend!
To have Christ’s words abiding in us, is to keep His sayings and precepts continually
before our memories and minds, and to make them the guide of our actions and the rule
of our daily conduct and behaviour.
