On Aug. 20 4-H members from
the North and South Huron sheep
clubs came together to compete in
the 2011 Bayfield Fair. Competitors
arrived between 9 and 10 a.m.
Members lined up with their 4-H
project lambs and waited their turn
to get their lambs shorn. Josh
Bruton was the shearer of the day.
Members had a first-hand look at
the condition of their lambs after
shearing for the competition which
started at 1 p.m. The judge was
Elmira’s Anita DeJong. The show
started with ewe lamb and market
lamb classes.
In the junior breeding ewe lamb
class there were five lambs; this
class was won by Alita Swart. In the
senior breeding ewe lamb class
there were seven lambs; this was
won by Matt Swart who also had the
Grand Champion breeding ewe.
Reserve champion was won by
Allison Terpstra who had earlier
placed second in the senior breeding
ewe class.
Next there were confirmation
classes for the 4-H lambs. The first
class was a class of 10 heavy market
lambs; this class was won by
Dawson Coultes. There were 12
light market lambs and this class
was won by Laurina VanDorp.
Market lamb grand champion was
won by Laurina VanDorp with
reserve champion going to Dawson
Coultes.
After these classes were judged,
the showmanship portion of the
competition began. The judge was
looking for how quickly members
set up their lamb’s feet, fluffing of
the wool as well as judging your
lamb against the lamb ahead of you.
Members should always keep their
lambs in a straight lineup and
always give view of the lamb for the
judge.
Senior showmanship was won by
Kayla Bishop; Intermediate
showmanship, Dallas Coultes;
junior showmanship, Allison
Terpstra; novice showmanship,
Tiffany Dietner and PeeWee
showmanship, Alex Coultes.
All the first- and second-place
winners met in the ring for a final
class and the overall champion was
by Kayla Bishop while reserve
champion was won by Kabrina
Bishop.
All members were awarded some
prize money, thanks to the
generosity of the United
Communities Credit Union and the
Bayfield Fair.
The South Huron Club met again
on Monday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. at
leader, Deb Falconer’s home.
Members wrote the Sheep and
Huron County 4-H quiz at that time.
