Building permitsahead of last year
Building activity in Morris-
Turnberry is far ahead of last year at
this time, Chief Building Official
Steve Fortier told councillors at their
Aug. 16 meeting.
Building permits valued at $1.14
million were issued in July, bringing
the total to $3.9 million so far for
2011, an increase of $1.7 million
from the same time last year.

The tender of Ryan Construction
of Brussels was accepted for snow
plowing for next two winters, with
an option for a third.
The tender was only the second
lowest of the six received but Gary
Pipe, director of public works
recommended its acceptance
because the company would use a
grader, not a truck.
“My preference would always be
for a grader,” he said, noting that in
the case of icy roads, the grader can
scarify the ice.
He also recommended that council
accept an offer of Solid Ground
Landscaping to use a tractor to clear
Belgrave streets and the municipal
well properties at a cost of $125 per
cleanout. The municipality would
still plow Brandon Road and sand
streets when slippery but the offer
could mean streets got cleaned
sooner when township staff were
busy elsewhere. The offer can be
accepted on a trial basis and if it
doesn’t work, the municipal crew
can take over again, Pipe said.
***
The Belgrave street paving project
came in over budget, but the extra
costs were worth it, Pipe said.
The additional costs involved
work to solve some water drainage
problems, he said.
“I’ve had some comments [from
Belgrave residents] and they’ve all
been good,” Pipe said.
***
Council approved the purchase of
the Keystone Software package for
municipal record keeping at a cost of
$28,399.
“We’ve been looking at it for three
or four years,” Mayor Paul Gowing
said, noting $30,000 had been set
aside in the budget.
“Our auditor recommended we
move forward with this,” said Nancy
Michie, administrator, clerk-
treasurer.

The Citizen
The week of Aug. 22-26 Knox
United Church, Belgrave held
another successful Vacation Bible
School.
Over 50 children attended each
day and a total of 74 children
attended at one point or another
during the week.
The theme this year was Kingdom
of the Son Safari. The children did
crafts, sang songs, played games,
heard stories and enjoyed snacks all
on the African Safari theme.
Ten adults and 12 teenagers
helped to ensure that the
children had a happy and successful
week.
On Thursday evening, the children
demonstrated what they had learned
at a well-attended parents’ night.
Donations for the night were
dedicated to Goderich relief efforts
and over $204 was collected.
This is just a reminder that there is
no church at Knox United on
Sunday, Sept. 4. Church services
resume on Sept. 11 (Grandparents’
Day).
Everyone is welcome.

A young plowing prodigy?
Lily Grobbink didn’t hesitate at all when jumping on a
smaller tractor at the Huron County Plowing Match on Aug.
26 at the Scott Farm near Belgrave. Grobbink, with some
assistance to make sure she was safe, got her first taste of
plowing right beside the Queen of the Furrow contestants.
