BLAKE. In memory of Bob Blake
(Bennie) who passed away as a
result of an accident September 5,
2007.
If we could have a lifetime wish,
And one dream that could come true,
We would pray to God with all our
hearts,
Just to see and speak to you.
A thousand words won’t bring you
back,
We know because we’ve tried,
And neither will a million tears,
We know because we’ve cried.
You left behind our broken hearts,
And precious memories too,
But we never wanted memories,
We only wanted you.
We love you, we honour you,
We cradle you in our hearts.
– Love forever, Clara, Kerry,
Christopher and Devin. 34-1

Amanda Klaver of RR5 Seaforth
topped five other competitors and
was crowned Queen of the Furrow
at the Huron County Plowing
Match near Belgrave.
The competition, which was held
on Friday, Aug. 26, featured Laurie
Ann Grobbink of Walton, Katie
Hern in Woodham, Darlene Lobb of
Clinton, Rachel Nivins of RR7
Lucknow, Ursina Studhalter of
RR2 Blyth and Klaver presenting
their speeches, plowing and
doing some impromptu public
speaking in hopes of coming out on
top.
Klaver’s winning speech was
about the virtues of Huron County
and pulled a toy tractor from a bag
of assorted props used to inspire her
impromptu monologue.
Grobbink chose to speak on the
recipe for creating the perfect
Queen of the Furrow and her
impromptu speech was on a salt
shaker.
Nivins spoke on the dangers of
farming and spoke on the uses of
tools and tape measures for her
impromptu section.
Studhalter remarked on the need
for farmers in the future and spoke
about bandages and first aid for her
impromptu speech.
Hearn attempted to discuss
her experiences at the rodeo and
her passion; barrel racing in her
speech about gold buckle
dreams. Her impromptu speech
was inspired by a medical
bottle.
Lobb communicated the
importance of century farms and
drew a toy chicken from the prop
bag for her impromptu speech.
The Queen spends the remainder
of this year representing the Huron
County Plowing Match and the
Huron County Plowmen’s
Association while advocating
agricultural living and business
before going to the Ontario
Plowing Match to compete in the
Ontario Queen of the Furrow
Competition.
That title comes with several
perks, including a vehicle with
most expenses paid and a lot of
responsibility.
The 2010 winner, Lindsay
(Willits) Underwood of RR1
Wingham will be representing
Huron County at the 2011 Ontario
Plowing Match in the United
Counties of Prescott and Russell at
Chute-à-Blondeau in Ontario from
September 20-24.
Any young woman between the
ages of 16 and 24 can participate in
the Queen of the Furrow
competition.
Hanna McCutcheon of Brussels
was slated to participate in the
competition, however she had
previously been named
Ambassador of the Brussels Fall
Fair, and bowed out of the
Queen race to pursue that
opportunity.
Progressive Conservative Huron-
Bruce MP candidate Lisa
Thompson has vacated her
Goderich office in hopes of helping
those affected by the tornado.
“While we initially planned to
open an office, and had leased
office space in downtown
Goderich, my staff and I feel the
space would be better used by a
business displaced by this tragic
tornado,” she said.
Thompson’s campaign manager
Ken Robertson stated that, while it
may be a tight squeeze, dozens of
workers will be working out of
Blyth.
Thompson hopes that other
candidates will follow her lead.
At its Aug. 16 meeting, Morris-
Turnberry Council approved a
zoning change for a Turnberry
Ward property that was
severed from the surrounding
farm against the advice of the
Huron County Planning
Department.
The severance by JGN Farms
Ltd. had been opposed by the
planning department. At the May 3
meeting, Carol Leeming, Huron
County Planner, told council that
although the farm in question is
zoned as farmland, it is also
designated as having potential for
future gravel extraction, based on
mapping by the Ministry of
Northern Development and Mines.
As such no change could be made
that might hinder future extractive
use.
But council had supported the
severance anyway, and then Huron
County Council also approved the
severance over the advice of
planners.
The zoning amendment puts an
agriculture small holding
classification on the severed
property and a special designation
on the remaining farmland to
prevent any residence being built on
it in future.
