For the second year in a row, theBlyth Festival is proud to presentJake’s Gift by Julia Mackey – a multi
award-winning Canadian play about
a World War II veteran’s journey
back to Juno Beach for the 60th
anniversary of D-Day.
Audiences last year were so
moved by the production that the
Blyth Festival felt compelled to
bring Jake’s Gift back for those that
missed it last year as well as thosethat wish to see it again. “I broughtthree teenagers to see Jake’s Gift and
the performance crossed the
generations extremely well”, said
audience member Jane Antoniak of
London, Ontario, “All of us truly felt
the impact of the message.”
During the play, cantankerous
Jake meets Isabelle, a precocious 10-
year old from the local village,
whose inquisitive nature and charm challenge the old veteran toconfront some long ignored
ghosts.
Jake’s Gift was created after writer
and performer Julia Mackey
travelled to Normandy, France in
June 2004 for the 60th anniversary
ceremonies of D-Day. She spent
eight days touring the Normandy
coast, attending many of the
ceremonies and interviewingCanadian, British and Americanveterans, as well as the local French
people.
Jake’s Gift will take place on
Thursday, Sept. 8 at 8 p.m. at Blyth
Memorial Hall. Tickets are $30,
available at www.blythfestival.com
or by calling 1-877-862-5984. Prior
to the performance there will be a
country supper for $15 in the Lower
Hall at 6 p.m.

Federal MP Ben Lobb confirmed
Aug. 24 that the Disaster Financial
Assistance Arrangements (DFAA),
through the Department of Public
Safety, will be made available to the
Town of Goderich, via the Province
of Ontario, to provide additional
funds for people and the town
affected by the recent tornado if
needed.
“The federal government is
committed to providing support to
communities that have been
devastated by natural disasters, I
am proud to say that our government
will stand behind the Town of
Goderich and help them overcome
the devastating effects of the
tornado,” said Lobb who has been on
the ground and in close contact with
the municipality since the day of the
tornado.
“I would like to express my
deepest condolences and sympathy
to the family of Norman Laberge
for their terrible loss. I would
also like to extent my sympathy to
all of those who have been affected
by the tornado,” said Lobb.
“The Town of Goderich will recover
from this devastation thanks to
the leadership of town council
and staff and the hard work of
the emergency responders, residents
of Goderich and dedicated
volunteers.”
The Government’s Disaster
Financial Assistance Arrangements
(DFAA) program provides provinces
and territories with compensation
when the costs associated with a
major natural disaster exceed what
they could reasonably be expected to
bear on their own. Under the DFAA,
the Government will cost share
eligible expenses such as repairs to
public infrastructure and the cost of
evacuation, transportation, and
emergency food.
Unfortunately, we
couldn’t fit everyone
in the picture.
THIS YEAR, ONTARIO CREATED MORE JOBS
THAN ALL OTHER PROVINCES COMBINED.
