Brussels baseball team moves on in WOAA playoffsOn Saturday afternoon theBrussels WOAA squirt team playedhost to the visiting TavistockAthletics in the final game of theSouth Division, eight-game round
robin playoff.
Tavistock opened the scoring with
one run in the first inning, however
Brussels answered back with a run
of their own in the bottom of the
first. Pitcher Wyatt Machan headed
up the defence by pitching a solid
game that saw only one more
Tavistock runner cross the plate in
seven innings.
The offence was led by Machan
with two triples and Bennett Newell
and Logan Kellington who also
added homeruns as the Brusselsteam went on to win 8-2.The first round of the playoffsshowed just how potent the Brusselsoffence can be, scoring 67 runs,
while only giving up 22 runs to their
opponents through eight games.
The offence has seen an increase
in run production from Connor
Bride, Jake Mitchell, Mitchell Ward,
Jessica Johnston, Nolan Johnston,
Dylan McNeil and Connor
DenDekker. Jack Pipe, Jarron
Thompson and Kellington have
showed impressive defence in the
infield helping Machan towards two
“no hitters” and multiple wins.
The Squirts move on to the
WOAA best of five, MajorChampionship representing theSouth Division against Pricevillefrom the North. Coach Pipe andNewell have been impressed with
the success of the team as they have
come together and played
exceptionally well in the competitive
first half of the playoffs. Solid
defence and timely run production
have been the key to their success.
The series hopefully gets
underway this week. Please check
with a parent or coach to see when it
starts. Fan support is welcomed as
the Junior Tigers move on to the next
level.
On the move
The final game of the WOAA round robin for the Brussels
squirts was played at home last weekend with the
hometown Brussels team taking on Tavistock and winning
by a score of 8-2. (Vicky Bremner photo)
Chip and a Putt
– By Bruce Skinn
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club enjoyed another busy week
and with all the rain the course is
again in great shape.
The senior men played on
Tuesday this past week with 17
golfers taking part on a great
morning for golf. Warren Rich was
low net followed by Doug Barfoot
and Wayne Gordon. Don Bone
fired a 37 for low gross honours
with Harry George and Doug
Vanderwoude coming in at 38.
Teeswater boy Lloyd Lamont again
was winner of the prize for longest
putt.
The Tuesday ladies took
advantage of a terrific afternoon to
play for the Wilma Kerr trophy.
Luanne Kerr came out the winner
followed closely by Maxine
Robinson.
On Wednesday, Aug. 24 the club
hosted FM 94.5 The Bull day. For
the second time in three years
Mother Nature played havoc with
the herd and limited play
throughout the day. Some of the
night golfers spent a brief time in
the basement of the club due to a
severe hail storm.
The Thursday men had less-than-
stellar conditions, but still managed
to have 56 golfers out for men’s
night, playing mostly in a cool
Scottish mist. Closest-to-the-pin
winners were Kent McPherson,
Bill Robinson and Tony Barr. Doug
Reinhardt picked up two longest
putt awards along with Lloyd Erb
and Jason Brick. Calvin Ruttan was
hidden score winner. Chris
Stevenson shot a 38 for low gross
honours.
On Saturday morning the club
held the annual lefty/righty
championship. For the second year
in a row the trophy was won by the
right side but the lefthanders still
hold a 5-3 margin of victories.
The club will be hosting its club
championship on Sept. 3-4
followed by the senior John
Mallick Memorial to be held on
Wednesday, Sept. 7.
OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS
Everyone at the club wishes all
the best to our neighbours from
Goderich after the devastating
tornado.
A great time for communities to
come together.
Bennetts celebrate 50 years
Ross and Margaret Bennett
celebrated 50 years of marriage at
the Brussels Legion on Saturday
with a large group of their family
members and friends.
It was on Aug. 26, 1961 that
Margaret Bell, daughter of W.H. and
Laura Bell of Brussels and Ross
Bennett, son of Roy and Viola
Bennett of Walton tied the knot.
The service was conducted by
Rev. Ken Griffith at Brussels United
Church.
The couple was attended by
Barbara Dunbar, Susan Miller (nee
Bell) and Margaret Hodder (nee
Bell) and Gerald Dressel, Harris
Bell and Barry Marshall.
Before returning to Walton to live,
the couple honeymooned in
northern Ontario.
The Bennetts then settled into a
life of farming, until they retired in
2009 and moved to Brussels.
They had two children, Nanci
(Ducharme) and Peter. They also
have three grandchildren.
Able to attend the anniversary
festivities were two members of the
wedding party travelling from
British Columbia and Alberta, with
the best man coming into Brussels
from Bracebridge, and others
coming from Elora, Collingwood,
Owen Sound, Seaforth and Clinton.
The Bennetts are still very active
in the community. Ross has been in
the Brussels Legion Pipe Band for
40 years and Margaret has been a
long-time member of the Brussels
Agricultural Society. Both are
lifetime members of the Brussels
Legion and they attend Duff’s
United Church.
Congratulations
Ross and Margaret Bennett celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary last weekend at the Brussels Legion with a
group of their family members and friends, including
members of the wedding party. (Vicky Bremner photo)
