Like much of the village of Walton
last week, the students at Walton’s
Little School recently got in the
motocross spirit by hosting their
annual bicycle rally. The students
were invited to bring their own bikes
to Walton Little School, decorate
them and ride around the preset
course. The staff used this
opportunity to talk to the children
about bike safety and the importance
of wearing bike helmets.
Our budding scientists here in
Walton have kept busy this summer
filling the class aquarium with
absolutely every living organism that
could be found on the playground.
We’ve had the creepiest of crawlies
from toads and caterpillars to
snails and crickets in the aquarium.
After studying the bugs closely,
the children let them go in the
field.
Some of the most popular events
this summer for the children have
been the “splish splash” days. There
was no hesitation on the children’s
part to run through the icy
sprinklers, splash in the wading
pools or slide head-first down the
slip ’n slide, all in an effort to keep
cool on the playground.
The summer months are coming to
an end and the staff of the Walton
Little School wish all their graduates
all the best at “big school” and they
look forward to welcoming many
new friends and their families to
Walton’s Little School for the start
of a new school year.
The “Golden Girls” of Listowel
were in Brussels last week for a
visit. They were visiting with friends
at Huronlea and stopped at
Cinnamon Jim’s for lunch. I had the
pleasure of joining the three ladies
for lunch and a visit. I enjoyed my
visit, with the three former Ethelites,
Barb Dunbar, Isabel Bremner and
Isabel Pearson. The ladies are doing
very well and Barb tells me that Bob
Cunningham is doing very well too.
They report that they enjoy getting
The Citizen and being able to keep
up with the news and people of
Brussels and area.
Karin McDonald Calhoun has her
seven-year-old granddaughter
Sydney visiting from Calgary at this
time. A very special treat for the
young lady was to go to Toronto and
the Selena Gomez concert. She was
taken by her special godmothers
LeeAnn and Kelly (McDonald) and
her newest special friend “tiny
tinkerbell” Alicia McDonald. They
left early on Tuesday morning and
headed to the CNE first. They went
to see some of the children’s shows
including the Clown show and the
Puppeteer show. They went to
Ontario Place for dinner and then to
the Molson Amphitheatre for the
show.
They had their blankets to sit on
the grass and could see the show
very well. Sydney was quite quiet
and amazed for the first segment, but
it didn’t take too long before she was
up dancing and really enjoying
Selena’s show. There were almost
15,000 attending the show. The girls
report they had a wonderful day with
little Sydney!
We are pleased to report that
Dawn White is home from Stratford
Hospital and we wish her well in her
recovery.
We are happy to her that Clarence
Bishop is home from hospital after
having surgery. He is doing well,
weak, but coming along nicely
reports RoseMarie.
When I went to Walton last
Thursday morning, I was surprised
to see a very large crowd of men
around Cook’s. I was to learn that
about 50 men were there from the
Blyth Emergency Services Training
Centre to practice emergency
training procedures when dealing
with entrapment with farm
commodities in silos or granaries.
The men were from all across
Ontario.
Congratulations to Maitland and
Mary Edgar on celebrating their
60th wedding anniversary in
Petrolia. The Edgars have many
family connections in our area
including Jim Bowman, who is
Mary’s twin brother. Jim and
Shirley, along with Jean Bewley
attended the celebration dinner, as
did many Edgar, Elston and
Bowman relatives.
The CMRC ATV race that was to
be held at the Walton Raceway this
past week had to be moved to Burnt
River, north of Lindsay, due to the
poor track conditions at Walton.
Three area young people have been
active in the sport of ATV racing this
year and have done very well.
Mitchell, Taylar and Mathew
McKee, children of Jeff and Tracey
McKee, all finished second in their
classes in the Canada Cup series.
They earned points over the last
three weekend races and earned
second-place trophies for their
efforts. Congrats to the McKee
children!
Our condolences to the Machan
family on the passing of Barry
Machan. He leaves his children
Donna, David and Dan and families
to mourn his loss. Our sympathies to
his six brothers and eight sisters and
their families, many of the Brussels
area.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week included Brent Godkin, Sandra
Zwep, Stephen Ryan, Steve Eckert,
Bryce Kruse, Sharon Pryce, Brenda
Bewley Raven, Tim Wharton, Brian
Huether, Albrecht Ringgenberg,
Keith Bachert, Rhonda Ryan
and Kim Strome. Happy birthday to
all.
The widespread damage caused by
the tornado that touched down in
Goderich has been repeatedly shown
on our TV screens. Many of us have
relatives or friends who are in the
Goderich area and are hearing of the
tremendous damage they have
endured.
A niece of Henk and Agnes Ten
Pas, returned to find that their home
was moved off of its foundation. The
amazing thing was that the furniture
was mostly still in its place, the
pictures still on the walls, but yet the
door of the refrigerator was twisted
off its hinges. They have since
learned that the house is a writeoffand are busy moving everything out.Grandma Elizabeth McKercherreports that her grandson, Rob
McKercher, put the minds of his
family members at ease right away,
by calling to say he was safe and
sound immediately after the tornado
hit. He told them tree branches and a
few trees were damaged on his street
but he and the house were fine.
Elunid McNair has her only
daughter Myra and her husband Bill
in Goderich. They called Elunid to
report they were alright but had no
hydro and had branches down on
their property. Myra’s daughter Jana
and her husband Kalen, live only a
block away from them and they had
hydro and a few branches down as
well.
Dave and Karen Bowles had
decided to take their Australian
friend to Goderich last Sunday
afternoon and then they were going
to have a fish dinner on the beach.
They arrived in Goderich and the
friend wanted to stop at Wal-Mart, so
they did. It was while they were inthe store the tornado hit. Dave was atthe door ready to leave when hecould see shopping carts blowing
across the parking lot and thought
something was very wrong. It wasn’t
very long and cars were pulling into
the parking lot with windows broken
out and other damage to the vehicles.
There was no tour of Goderich
and the trio was glad to head back
to Brussels to check their own
home.
These are just a few stories from
people I have heard from, people I
have talked to and I’m sure there are
many more. Thankfully the loss of
life was minimal and although the
loss of a home is a shock and sad,
over time, homes can be rebuilt,
possessions replaced and lives will
return to normal. We wish everyone
the best in this difficult time.
We, in Brussels, are fortunate not
to have suffered this horrible
experience, but we are all able to
help those in need. The CIBC is
accepting donations of non-
perishable foods to help feed thosedisplaced from their homes, cleaningproducts and paper products to helpthose people clean up their homes
from the damage. Many of these
people are now unemployed due to
the closure of many businesses in
Goderich. We can all help. If
everyone contributes a little, a lot of
help can be distributed to many of
the families of Goderich. As soon as
I heard about CIBC and their
collecting at noon on Wednesday, I
headed to Foodland and did my
shopping. It had only been two hours
and I was the third person to put
donations in the grocery cart at our
CIBC and I hope it is overflowing
tenfold by this time this week.
The Huron County Plowing Match
was held at the farm of Jim Scott
near Belgrave last week.
Jacob Gulutzen, son of Charles
and Terry, did very well. He had the
best crown (start) and was awarded
the Top Plowman Award. Scott
Baan, son of Steve and Theresa, had
the best finish of the day and won
that award. Lucas Townsend, son of
Matt and Amy, captured the Junior
Champion Award for the day.
The McGavin boys, Brandon and
Jacob competed in the 16-and-over
category with Brandon capturing
first place and Jacob finishing third.
The “Donkey Class” is a class that
rules once the competitor starts
plowing, his butt cannot come off the
seat. Jeff McGavin was the winner
with George Townsend close by.
The Queen of the Furrow
competition had several area girls
vying for the title. The winner was
Samantha Klaver of Seaforth.
Congrats to Laurie Ann Grobbink
and Ursina Studhalter for doing an
excellent job. The Plowmen’s
Princess had four local girls
competing. Congrats to Lexi Smith
who was crowned the 2011 Princess
and congrats to Marion Studhalter,
Chelsey Terpstra and Emily Mitchell
who report it was a great experience.
