One of the main dangers
arising from smooth tires is that
they usually function quite well
in dry weather, and may build
up a false sense of security in the
driver. Stopping distance is
about the same for old and new
tires on dry pavement. But,
according to the Ontario Safety
League, at 60 mph on a wet
asphalt surface bald tires require
an additional stopping distance
of about 220 feet over new tires.
"Fair weather friends" it a
description that fits treadless
tires, They give the impression
of dependability in good
conditions, but let you down
when things get difficult.
