Voyageur No.. I found to 'be.
maneuverable and stable
Initial tests with the
Voyageur Heavy Haul Mr
Cushion Vehicle (ACV) have
shown the large craft to be
stable and maneuverable.
Completed on November 27
at the Bell Aerospace Canada
Division of Textron Canada
Ltd., the 40-gross-ton vehicle has
been operated for more than 20
hours at Grand Bend Airport, •
Test operator for Bell is
Jacques Robitaille of Grand
Bend. A former operator of the
smaller SRN-6 and SK.5 ACVs,
Robitaille's. cabin in the
Voyageur is 22 feet above
ground when the vehicle is on its
four-foot cushion of air.
"As an operator, I couldn't
ask for better visibility," said
Robiteille.
He reported that the most
significant finding from the early
trial runs is the craft's stability
on gusty, windy days.
"A car driver can be charged
with being impaired even though
he can pass a breathalyzer test, "
Phil Farmer, Executive Director
of the Canada Safety Council
said today.
"Since the breathalyzer was
adopted, there has been a
tendency for people to believe
that they can drink and drive if
they are under the legal limit set
in the breathalyzer legislation in
the Criminal Code of Canada,"
he said.
"But the breathalyzer
legislation means that having
more than 80 milligrams of
alcohol per 100 millilitres of
Robitaille, a native of Quebec
who has logged more than 2,000
ACV operating hours since
1966, Bald wind and rain
combined for poor operating
conditions on December 10,
Despite this, he operated for
nearly an hour in wind gusts up
to 48 miles per hour,
On the next day, Robitaille
operated the craft with ease in
winds from 20 to .40 miles per
hour during demonstration runs
for employees' families and
Grand Bend area residents.
Nearly 1,000 persons attended
the demonstrations,
Robitaille said the craft's
twin engines are the chief reason
for its stability.
"For example," he said, "I
can trim the pitch of the
propellers to allow me to drive
in a 25-mile per hour
crosswind,"
your blood is a criminal offence.
"The legislation still says that
impaired driving is an offence
even if one has not reached this
level.
"The simple reason is that
many people can become
impaired below this limit," he
said.
Alcohol affects everyone
differently. The degree of
impairment depends on your
body weight, your age, your
health, whether you are using
prescription drugs and other
factors.
"It takes the body more than
an hour to eliminate one and a
tsy trimming the pitch, he
explained, one of the eraft's two
engines delivers enough extra
thrust to counteract the pressure
of the crosswind,
Later, the test program will
take the amphibious craft over
water — possibly on nearby Lake
Huron, Much of the land testing
is being done over soggy plowed
fields at the airport.
Because the vehicle rides on a
cushion of air, the field remains
unmarked despite repeated
passes, And much of the time in
, the early tests, the Voyageur was
operating at its maximum design
weight of 40 tons.
Voyageur No, 1 -- a vehicle
designed, developed and built by`
Bell Aerospace Canada — is the
first of two prototypes. Craft
No. 2, a.slightly different version
with more powerful engines, will
be completed in March,
half ounces or spirits, three
ounces on non-fortified wine, or
12 ounces of beer," he said. "So
if you drink and must drive,
have no more than one drink an
hour. If you are an older person,
have a medical problem or use
prescription drugs, possibly you
shouldn't be drinking at all
before driving."
His statement supports a
campaign launched by the
Canada Safety Council this
month aimed at a leading cause
of traffic accidents -- the adult
social drinker.
The campaign is aimed at
re-establishing the host/guest
relationship and emphasizing the
responsibilities of all who drive
after drinking.
"Traditionally the good host
has provided his guests with
more than enough to eat and
drink" Mr. Farmer said. "The
purpose of the campaign is to
make the host aware that he is
being a good friend only when
he takes the safety of his guests
into consideration."
"This does not mean that one
should abstain from serving
alcoholic beverages, But it does
mean that the host will make
every effort to keep everyone
below the critical level where
driving ability is impaired."
The campaign also points out
the responsibility of the driver
to his family, the host of the
party, pedestrians and persons in
other vehicles. "You ARE Your
Brother's Keeper."
Most of Canada's forests

Kingdom and Japan.
