HomeMy WebLinkAboutClinton News-Record, 1971-12-23, Page 21motor of principle BY J. PAR L HEMINGWAY By the time this appears in print it will be just a couple of days before Christmas. I wonder what that means? ' Does it mean a conglomeration of too expensive presents, for many, a nightmare of bills in January? Does Christmas mean a house full of relatives and friends and children with turkey, dressing, vegetables, salads, jellos, plum pudding, mince-meat pie, cookies, candies and beverages? Does Christmas mean that we are celebrating 'the birth of ONE who is the Saviour of mankind? Who was it that said "Peace, Peace — and there is no Peace?" A couple of weeks age I happened to tune in the T.V. program "Under Attack," Mr. Lemieux, defending lawyer for the F.L.Q, was on the hot seat. He did a fine job of defending the F.L.Q. He made a strong point that the F.L.Q. was sincerely dedicated to getting a fair share of the nations wealth for the oppressed. This most of us would support. However, few of us would agree that the F.L.Q. is inspiring us that this organization would carry through to a happy conclusion. I am strongly opposed to organizations that pursue a course that openly sets out to divide people. The F.L.Q. talks only of "French" Canada, What has become of the "French-Canadian" of a few years ago and the "Canadian" of the post Bill of Rights days? How many French are there in Quebec? How many of these so-called "French" in Quebec are sure that they have no "Flemish" blood in their veins? The Flemish don't seem too happy in France. How many of us can boast any other "Nationality" than Canadian? If you look at the by-line you will conclude that the writer is "English" It is true that my paternal grand-father's family originated in Yorkshire but what does that mean? Yorkshire is on the East coast and certainly was subject to invasion and settlement by the Romans, the Norsemen, the Saxons, and their friends and relatives. Perhaps, like St. Paul I could lay claim to Roman citizenship. Further, just to keep the record very straight, one grandmother was of Scottish origin but her family migrated to Ireland before coming to Canada. Her husband was lowland Scottish but with the close proximity of "Gretna Green" can we be sure of his origin. The other grandmother was highland Scottish or was she partly Norwegian? Please before you get as confused as I am just call me "Canadian" and spend some time clearing up your own racial origin. What I'm really trying to say is that this "French" bit is just a bit phoney. One.thing that I do think is true is the depressed condition of our Quebec Canadians. What better time than Christmas to do some serious soul searching for real problems and then we will have a good chance of finding the solution. In fact I think I was given the real solution, even though it was given in derision, on the "Under Attack" program. One of the more youthful of the University students went on the microphone, and after Mr. Lemieux had made a strong case for fair play for the poor, asked "Mr. Lemieux, how can this happen? Do you expect the Holy Spirit to descend and make things right? And the time ran out on the program and no answer was broadcast. Is there any other answer? And ,isn't this the real message of Christmas? Not just for December 25, but for all our years? Perhaps we could each make a start by doing all in our power to see to it that our tax dollars and our charitable donations really get to those who are worse off then we are. 321311?%4MMEAKMY4VSYSZDZE;i4MIMMSEMMMAggli&EZEZ. Mexican children wait till January 6-before getting presents , Mexico is a country where Santa Claus and the Christmas legends have apparently lost a battle to win acceptance. Children are told that gifts come from "nilio Jesus;' the boy Jesus.. and in most cases must wait until Jan, 6, the day of the Three Wise Men, before they get their presents. In Canada four out of five dairy cows. are Holsteins. There has been no importation of Holsteins to North America since 1905, and in the meantime the Dutch and North American cattle have developed along different lines. In Holland the emphasis has been on raising an animal suitable for both milk and beef production, while in North America the emphasis has been on milk production. As a result the North American cattle have become taller and more angular than the shorter-legged, thicker Dutch type. However, because of their larger size the North American cattle can be readily fed out to produce profitable beef animals. Their popularity has increased to the point where Canada has in recent years replaced Holland as the world's leading exporter of pure bred Holsteins. To determine how the North American type of animal would fare under the conditions that prevail in Holland, the Dutch authorities have established a research project where Holstein calves from Canada and the U.S.A. will be raised in Holland, together with two similar groups of Dutch animals, one group Black and White Friesians and the other Dutch Red and Whites. For this purpose a total of 63 pure bred Black and White Holstein calves, 20 from Canada and 43 from the U.S.A., have just been shipped to Holland. All three groups of calves will be raised under similar conditions in Holland. They will be weighed and measured as they develop and when they have calved their milk and butterfat production will also be carefully checked during their lifetime. A parallel experiment will involve the use of sixty Dutch cows in each of six selected private herds. In each herd half the cows will be bred with semen from Dutch bulls and the other half with semen from North American bulls. The resulting progeny will be carefully compared, for milk ancl_meat production. It will be some years before definite results from this research program are available, but the findings will be of great interest to dairymen throughout the world. The Canadian calves were selected by Master Breeder and Type Classifier T. Robert Flett, Oshawa, Ontario, and were shipped by Rockwood International Livestock Ltd., Georgetown, Ontario. Those contributing calves were: Gerard Smits, Lancaster, Ont.; Newlands Farm, Dorchester, Ont.; Clarence Baker, Napanee, Ont.; Collins Bay Penitentiary, An outbreak of a disease called "sleeper's syndrome" could be a problem for Ontario feedlot operators, A few cases in Central and Western Ontario are causing some concern. A disease of the central nervous system, the technical name is Infectious T h r o m b o e m b o l i c Meningoencephalitis, It was first diagnosed in Ontario in 1968. It, has been diagnosed in cattle native to Ontario as well as animals from Western Canada. Affected cattle vary in age from 6 to 18 months. However, the most common occurrence is in 400- to 500-pound feeder calves in the first month after being brought into the feedlot. Early symptoms include loss of appetite, high body temperature, knuckling at the fetlock, and the head held in an extended or elevated position. In six to twelve hours these signs are rapidly followed by inabliity to sit up or to hold up the head, and usually complete paralysis. Total blindness is also common. The relative incidence of the • disease is quite low, but once the animal goes down, death is almost certain. However, if the animals are treated in the first stages of the disease, recovery is rapid and complete, except for some animals which have varying degrees of impaired vision, Control methods greatly depend on early detection. Cattle treated with penicillin-streptomycin or other broad.spectrum anitbiotics will recover if they are treated early. There is no treatment once the disease has progressed beyond the early stages, Feedlot operators are urged to contact their veterinarian immediately if they suspect cases of sleeper's syndrome in their herd. 7 Clinton News-Record, Thursday, December 23, 1971 As this quiet scene reflects Christmas peace, may all share its true tranquility. rirtv H.
