line of Wayne Arthur, Paul
Johnson and Crawford and
it, too, produced results. Each
scored a goal.
The other goal came from a
set up by Jim Cameron who
passed into the corner to Wayne
McDougall who fed it out to
circles around Lucan in their
exciting 5.3 win.
Fred German was the big
difference as he kicked out 55
shots of the 58 peppered at him,
Although Lucan outshot the
Mustangs, most of the shots
were from the point. .
Early in the game, John
McKinley stole the puck from a
Lucan defeneeman's stick and
pulled out the goalie to give
Clinton the first goal. Lucan
came back a minute later when a
shot from Jeff Craig ricochetted
into the net. On several
occasions early in the game
Clinton failed on chances
especially when one of Mustard's
backhand shots hit the post,
then bounced across the top
crossbar.
Clinton went ahead again on
a beautiful breakaway goal by
Ron Graham who was set up by
Bob Cook on a clearing pass
from centre. German kept the
club in the game with some great
saves and had a little bit of luck.
Just after Ron Graham
missed on his second breakaway
of the game, a wicked curving
shot deflected off German's
gloye into the net to tie the
gaine. Captain Bob Cobk, blasted
in the third goal on a shot from
the point with John McKinley
screening the Lucan goalie. For
only the second time this year,
Clinton outscored a club in the
third period. Defenceman Gary
Cummings whipped in a pass
from Stu Mustard after only 39
seconds of , play in the period.
With two Clinton players in the
sin bin, Lucan's Dennis Carty
did everything possible to beat
German but excellent defensive
work by Cameron, Jervis, Cook
and Cummings and superb
penalty killing by Gord Riley and
Carl Frennin mined Fred.
The insurance goal for the
Mustangs was a beauty by John
McKinley as he fought off two
defenders to score on his
backhand. The win put the
Mustangs out in front with three
points over second place Exeter
Gord Riley on a perfect pass.
Riley drilled the shot past Rick
Williamson.
Another first for the season
was that the Mustangs outshot,
Tavistock throbghout the game.
Clinton's defensive unit o'f
Cameron, Fremlin, Jervis and
Cummings played a strong game
defensively,
The world's motor vehicle
population more than trebled in
the last decade, says the Ontario
Safety League. The total
increased from 73 million in
1960 to 226 million in 1970.
Mitchell top
Three period goals by
Mitchell gave the Hawks a 6.4
victory over the Mustangs.
Playing their fourth game in six
nights showed on the Mustangs
in the latter part of the pine
and also the top ,scorers Stu
Mustard. and John McKinley
were out of the lineup due to
university exams.
Coach Bill Weber was pressed
into using only three
defencemen as Bob Cook sat out
the game, after suffering a
broken nose in the Lucan game
on Friday night.
Mitchell's three lines skated
hard all night and their team
leader, Don Hislop beat Fred
German at the 55-second mark.
Then he assisted Lloyd Pickering
midway through the first period.
In the dying seconds of the
period Bill Stirling finished off a
play from Jim Cameron and
Gary Cummings to put Clinton
on the scoreboard. Wayne
Arthur netted the tying goal
when he tried to centre the puck
but Fundy knocked the puck
into his own net off his skate.
Clinton took advantage of a
powerplay to go ahead 3-2 on a
goal by Gary, Cummings,
Cummings banged in a rebound
on Bill Stirling's quick rush at
11:55.
BY KEITH WILLIAMS
Only three games were played
in the Central Huron Hockey
League this week as a game the
Juveniles were supposed to have
seen action in was postponed
due to the fact that team
members were involved in
examination at GDCI.
In the opening game of action
on Tuesday night in Clinton,
Bayfield downed Holmesville
7,4; In the first period Pete
Postill opened the scoring for
Holmesville with an assist going
to Bill Hogarth at 3:50, Bayfield
came back rather strongly
however as Joe Livermore
combined with Gord Fisher for
two goals the first at 11:12 and
the second at 11:42 and then
Frank Hagan sunk one more for
the Bayfield team with Wayne
Doak getting the assist.
Don Freeman scored at 1:36
from Wayne Doak to give
Bayfield another marker but Art
McDougall scored for
Holmesville in that second
period as well with assists on
that effort going to Ron Miller
and Jim Hayter.
s Mustangs
Then, with everyone backed
in on top of German, Mitchell's
Jim Roiph grilled in a shot from
the point. The first two periods
found the Mustangs three
defencemen, led by Jim
Cameron, Cal Fremlin and Greg
Jervis, doing a great job of
holding off Mitchell. Wayne'
Arthur• was • spotted as a
defenceman. Atthe eight-minute
mark of the third period he fired
a wicked slap shot to put
Clinton in the lead.
Cameron picked up a hooking
penalty when he tried to stop a
breakaway, Mitchell took
advantage of the extra man to
tie the game, then took the lead
on Hislop's second goal which
bounced off the post. The final
goal was disputed to no avail by
Clinton. German stopped Dennis
Smith on a breakaway but the
goal judge ruled the puck went
in.
