HomeMy WebLinkAboutClinton News-Record, 1971-12-23, Page 1Column The snow that came last week certainly helps promote the Christmas spirit, Somehow, though it's hard to get into the spirit of the season in this business until after the last paper before Christmas is on the press. The hustle and bustle of the pre-Christmas rush sort of pushes the feeling of the holiday out of the way for a while. Thankfully however, that final paper is just about through and we can get down to the serious business of preparing for the holidays. Every click of the typewriter brings it just that much closer. May the Roulston family, Jill, Christina and myself, wish each of you a happy holiday season. * Don Pullen from the Ontario Department of Agriculture reminds farmers that it is farm record book analysis time again. If farmers wish their completed 1971 farm record books analyzed, it should be sent to the ODAF office Before Feb. 15 with as many as possible sent in in January. The books will be checked in the local office with a summary card forwarded to the computer at Guelph. Books can be taken to the office or mailed in and a new book can be obtained. Farmers can receive assistance by calling for an appointment any morning in January from 10 a.m. to noon. There is no fee for the service. Elm Haven Hotel gets new owner Announcement was' made this week of the sale of the Elm Haven Motor Hotel to Mr. and Mrs. Alex Swatogor from Mr. and Mrs, Bill Fleischauer. The new owners formerly ran the Bala Bay Lodge in Bala, Ontario, a year-round operation. They operated this lodge for three years. They have two daughters, Audrey who is now attending Central Huron Secondary School in grade 12 and Dagmar who lives in Toronto. The hotel was 'built in 196'2 by the Fleischauers Who had previously operated Ruby and Bill's Restaurant on Huron Street, now called the Century Restaurant. It has had a colourful history ever since not always the most popular place with the town fathers. But it has had wide patronage from all over Huron County and beyond with audiences flocking to see entertainment ranging all the way from top singing trios like the Mercy Brothers to exotic dancing. Mr. and Mrs. Fleischauer have no plans at present for the future and intend to relax for the winter. C r )11 I (1 2+(I cools Clinton News-Record Thursday, December 23, 1971 106 Year - No,' 51 r Announcement on contest closing expected next month A closing date on the name-the-base contest announced last week in the News-Record is expected to be set when John van Gastel returns from the Barbados in January. Mr. van Gastel announced the contest last week but set no limit on the entry time. It is expected the contest will extend" into February at least and perhaps longer. First prize in the nation-wide contest will be the former Commanding Officer's house at the base. Mr. van Gastel himself puts the value of the house at at least $18,000 although some observers have valued it higher. It has four bedrooms, two baths, a fireplace in the living room, a large dining room and den. Second prize in the contest will be a trip Winners announced , in coloring contest for two to Nassau. Third is synthetic brick siding for a house and three other prizes of sets of luggage will also be given. Judges will be the mayors of the five towns in Huron and the Huron county warden. Everyone is eligible, for the contest except the judges. No further information about companies negotiating to locate was announced before Mr. van Gastel left for his holiday in the south but it is known that he was negotiating with a company from the United States. He said Thursday morning that negotiations were going well and he was confident the company would choose to locate at the base. As for entries in the contest all should be sent to the Mayor of Clinton and marked on the envelope "Name-The-Base Contest." •••,••••••••• • •• •• • • • .. .. • Winners of the annual Clinton News-Record colouring contest were announced Monday by Howard Aitken, manager of the News-Record. This year two girls and one boy were chosen winners. First prize winner is Margaret Haak, RR 2, Clinton an 11 year old. Second prize goes to George Collins, RR 3, Clinton a 10 year old. Winner of the third prize was Brenda Seaforth business Vincent Farm Equiprhent Limited of Seaforth will receive an Ontario Development Corporation small business loan, according to an announcement by the Honourable Allan Grossman, Minister of Trade and Development. The company, engaged in the servicing DeRoyter, RR 2, Bayfield a five year old. , Ten merchants supported the contest again this year and it proved more popular than ever with the kids. The number of participants is increasing each year and the judges had a difficult time choosing the winners.
