ARDA assists reserve
with resource inventory
An inventory of the Dokis
Reserve resources (Districts of
Nipissing and Parry Sound) to
launch plans for future
economic development was
announced today by the Hon.
Wm, A. Stewart, Ontario
Minister of Agriculture and
Food, and the Hon. Jean
Marchand, Canada Minister of
Regional Economic Expansion.
Financial assistance to complete
the inventory by March 31,
1972 will be provided through
the Federal-Provincial ARDA
administration, in co-operation
with the Dokis Indian Band
Council.
The resource inventory report
will map and reference all
natural and man-made resources
on the reservation. The report's
evaluations and recommenda-
tions for resource development
plans will be reviewed by the
Dokis Indian Band to ensure
complete understanding of the
effects of the plans on the
reservation and its people.
The need for the Dokis
Reserve inventory was
recognized and recommended by
the Dokis Band Council, Canada
Department of Indian Affairs
and Northern Development and
the Ontario Department of
Agriculture and Food. After a
preliminary visit to the
reservation, an ARDA Branch
official with the Ontario
Department of Agriculture and
Food reported there was an
urgent need for development
plans to realize the potential
value to the Dokis Reserve of
the tourist and forest industries.
This inventory is the result of
that demonstrated need.
Manitoulin firm gets
major ARDA grant
Plans to assist the N,A.
McDougal Construction
(Manitoulin) Limited of Gore
Bay to acquire a mobile hot and
cold mix asphalt plant and
related equipment were
announced today by the Hon.
Wm, A. Stewart, Minister of
Agriculture and Food (Ontario),
and the Hon. Jean Marchand,
Minister of Regional Economic
Expansion (Canada), under the
terms of the Federal-Provincial
Rural Development Agreement.
The ARDA grant, a major
factor in the McDougal
company's decision to begin
supplying asphalt mix at this
time, will help improve
transportation facilities in the
Manitoulin Island area and
create eight year-round jobs for
area people - six now and two
more at a later date.
In addition to the
Federal-Provincial financial
conditions of the grant, the
McDougal company must also
meet the specific equipment
standards recommended by the
Northern Ontario Development
Corporation. The equipment
purchased must meet the
pollution control requirements
of both the Ontario Water
Resources Commission and the
Air Management Branch of the
Ontario Department of Energy
and Resources Management, and
it must be suitable for preparing
and placing material as specified
by the Ontario Department of
Highways for highway surfacing
contracts in the Districts of
Manitoulin, Sudbury, and
Algoma.

A survey of the incidence of
internal swine parasites In
eastern Ontario is about to get
under way.
Dr. O. 0. Fisher, head of the
Kemptville Veterinary Services
Laboratory, says the survey is
designed as a practical aid for
producers, The aim is to increase
profits for the farmers by
minimizing diseases. Although
similar surveys have been carried
out throughout the province,
this is the first for eastern
Ontario,
A team .approach, involving
agricultural representatives,
industry representatives and

Mulching will protect your
garden over winter. Before
applying the mulch, however, be
sure you know the different
materials available and how to
use them, advises Professor B. J.
Peskey, Department of
Horticultural Science, University
of Guelph.
A mulch must conserve soil
moisture, improve texture, tilth,
aeration and structure of the
sail, retain or improve Soil
microorganism balance,
eliminate plant competition,
prevent erosion and runoff, and
regulate soil temperatures.
The lowly turnip is no more!
Years of research have given the
turnip new status and a new
name - rutabaga.
The rutabaga has an extra
mildness and sweetness. When
harvested after the first autumn
frosts, rutabagas have no hint of
bitterness, Quick cooking in a
tightly covered pan with a small
amount of boiling salted water
retains its sweet flavor and
valuable vitamin C. Dress up the
traditional mashed rutabaga with
different flavor combinations.
Add orange juice, brown argar,
and ginger; sour cream and
ginger; grated Cheddar cheese; or
savory, thyme, rosemary, -chives,
onion powder, nutmeg. Mash
With carrots or apples, Dice for
casseroles or stews. Serve raw in
salads, Bake, scallop, cream, or
glaze. Bxplore the many serving
possibilities.

Kemptville Laboratory staff, will
be involved in the survey. It will
cover five swine herds in each of
the 11 counties of eastern
Ontario. Twelve fecal samples
will be taken from each herd and
analyzed at the Kemptville
Laboratory. Saws, weaners 'and
growing pigs will be included in
the survey.
By examining the swine
population of eastern Ontario,
Dr. Fisher hopes to come up
with practical answers directly
applicable to the particular
conditions of the region. He
expects results to be available by
December of this year.
Both organic and inorganic
mulches are available. An
organic mulch returns elements
to the soil. Legumes and hay are
most efficient.
Although inorganic materials
are excellent mulches, they do
not return any nutrients to the
soil, says Professor Teakey. Their
initial cost May be lower but
supplementing the soil with
fertilizers will raise future costs.
Certain plastics, crushed
vermiculate, petlite stone, and
fiber glass are examples of
inorganic mulches.
Serve rutabaga with your
favorite pork or poultry dishes.
Buy rutabagas that are heavy
for their size, advise food
specialists at the Ontario Food
Council, Ontario Department of
Agriculture and Food. Light
rutabagas may be pithy or
hollow, with a strong flavor.
Rutabagas are waxed to lock In
Moisture, and store well in your
