Doug Rieht, captain of the Clinton Public School team manoeuvres through an obstacle course. It
was the second year in a tow the Clinton Public School team had won the rodeo.
Students from Clinton Public
School again proved, Friday
afternoon, that when it comes to
winning trophies, they can be
the best bicyclists around.
The team from the school
won the second annual bicycle
rodeo, duplicating their feat of
last year, on Friday afternoon at
the Clinton Community Centre.
The team, made up of both
boys and girls, defeated teams
from three Goderich schools,
two other Clinton schools and
Seaforth Public School.
The Seaforth team was new
to the event this year, and the
man behind the whole safety
program, Const. Tom Fortner of
the Goderich Police Department,
says he has had requests from
several other schools to enter the
rodeo next year so that it may
become a county-wide event.
At a dinner afterward at the
community centre for the
champions and the captains of
all teams, sponsored by the town
of Clinton, Councillor George
Hildebrand of Seaforth extended
an invitation to Const. Fortner
to bring the rodeo to Seaforth
next year.
Captain Doug Riehl of the
Clinton Public School team
accepted the trophy from Police
Chief Fred Minshall of the
Goderich town police force.
Among the judges at the
event were Police Chief Lloyd
Westlake of Clinton and
Sargeant LeRoy Oesch, also of
the Clinton force.
The contestants were judged
on their ability and agility in five
different tests,
First they had to ride in a
straight line between two
parallel marks on the pavement.
Next they had to weave in and
out between markers. Then it
was on to a figure eight, then a
test of their knowledge of stop
signs and signals and then
another agility test around old
tires on the pavement. Doug fliehl accepts the team championship trophy for elintoh treated to a dinner at the community centre by the town of
