Friday night as Central Huron
Secondary School held its
annual Commencement.
Guest speaker for the evening
was J. R, Gwynne.Timothy,
professor of History at the
University of Western Ontario.
He traced the history of
education from church schools
to the present system.
The former World War II
pilot, who, became a Wing
Commander and is now a
successful author and Anglican
chairman of the general
commission on church union,
said that people should ask:
Education for what?
He said there were two real
approaches to education: the
pure "ivory tower" approach,
which he felt was the only real
education; and the training
approach, which seeks to bestow
a level of professional
competence on students.
He said that educated persons
are privileged and wondered how
much education society can
afford to support. He told the
graduates they were lucky to be
coming out of school at a time
of peace and prosperity, but
warned this might not always be
so.
Rebecca Howse, a W. D. Fair
Scholarship winner, gave the
Valedictory address and
enlivened the latter part of the
evening with a few humorous
jabs at the school system she and
her classmates were leaving
behind.
