2,489 forest
fires in July
The Canadian Forestry
Service recorded 2,489 forest
fires across Canada during the
month of July.
This was only 31 more fires
than during the same period last
year but considerably higher
than the 10-year average of
1,798 for the month of July.
Total forest area affected in July
was 1,190,000 acres, more than
double the 10-year average of
587,000 acres for July.
The total number of forest
fires in Canada this year to July
31 was 6,938 over a total area of
2,246,000 acres.
The figures are compiled
monthly by the Forest Fire
Research Institute of the
Canadian Forestry Service from
provincial records.

The fall Meeting of Amber
Rebekah Lodge• was held
Wednesday, September 1, with a
pod attendance,
The meeting was opened by
Noble Grand Mrs, Jack Taylor
occeriying the chair, assisted by
Vice-Grand Mrs. Elizabeth Riley.
Quite a number of cards and
treats were sent out to sick and
shut-in members and friends
during the summer season.
Thank you cards were read for
these.
Plans are being made for the
installation of officers in district
lodges,
"Happy Birthday" was sung
to a number of members.
A pot luck luncheon was
served.
The United Church Women
of Chiselhurst United Church
held their fall meeting with
President Mrs, Russel Brock
opening the meeting with a
poem followed by the theme
song and prayer.
Mrs. G. Glenn gave the
worship, "The Common Heart",,
assisted by Mrs. T. Brintnell.
Mrs, H. Parker gave the
stewardship, "Partners With
God".
The ladies set November for
their Fall Bazaar and decided to
paint the exterior of the church.
Mrs, Rose Harris had the
program.
The meeting closed with
prayer,
Mrs. Bertha Jinks will
celebrate her 88th birthday,
Monday, September 13, at the
home of Mrs. Gordon Schwalm,
Unit 4 U.C,W,, Hensall
United Church, will hold their
meeting this Thursday,
September 9.
Mr. Tony Gelderland,
Ridgeto.wn, is visiting with Mr.
and Mrs. Sim Rootol for a few
days and attended the funeral of
Mr. Arie Legerwerf at Parkhill
Thursday.
Lynne Dodds of Seaforth is
visiting with her grandparents,
Mr. and Mrs, Sim Rootal,
Ray McKenzie, Toronto,
formerly of Hensall, is a patient
in Lakeshore Hospital, 3131
Lakeshore Boulevard West, New
Toronto, 14, recovering from
injuries he received in an
accident when he fractured his
arm and leg.
CHURCH NOTES
Sunday, September 12, marks
the resumption of the Sunday
Church School classes, There
will be a change, however, in
that, rather than meeting at their
former time of 9:45 a.m., all of
the children will meet with the
congresetion at 11 o'clock and
proceed to their classes during
the morning worship.

The Ontario, Safety League
quotes Dr. Gordon R. Bell,
Toronto specialist in alcoholic
addiction: "Many drivers, young
and old alike, have so few
controls in their aggressive
nature that they drive
dangerously without using
alcohol or similar drugs.
However, judging by the peak
incidence of accidents, these
aggressive tendencies occur most
frequently in male drivers under
age 25, the age period during

the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elgin
McKinley recently as they
celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary.
The highly esteemed Stanley
Township couple were married
50 years ago at the home of Mrs.
McKinley's parents, the late Mr.
and Mrs. George Coleman, in
Stanley Township. They were
both born in Stanley Township.
The McKinley's have lived on
the same farm, better known as
the McKinley homestead, even
though they have occupied three
different homes in the 50 years.
Two of their sons now live in the
former homes they used, while
the third son lives on an
adjoining farm.
A smorgasbord dinner was
held at the McKinley home for
members of the family on
August 25.
Looking after the
arrangements for the anniversary
were their daughter-in-laws,
along with neighbours and
friends. The grand-daughters
served while the grandsons
looked after the guest register.
Mr, and Mrs. McKinley have
three sons, Anson, Robert E.,
and Berne, and one daughter,
Mrs. Jean Fanson, of Fullarton.
They also have 18 grandchildren.
Mr. McKinley has two sisters,
Mrs. Mabel Levis, of Clinton,
and Mrs. Harvey Coleman, R.R.
1 Zurich. Mrs. McKinley has.
three sisters Mrs. Fred!
McClymont, Varna, Mrs. Ross
Chapman, Kippen, and Mrs. R.J.
Doig, Seaforth. A brother,
Anson, passed away several years
ago.
While Mr. McKinley operated
the farm for many years, he was

the ()Mario Safety League that a
green light at an intersection
doesn't guarantee safety. A
two-year survey in Philadelphia
showed intersections to be ten
times as dangerous for
pedestrians as non-signalized
crossings where pedestrians tend
to be more cautious.

Hatchery, which began
operation in the 1920's,
Both Mr. and Mrs. McKinley
have been active in the
community over the years, and
have held many responsible
positions in both church and
other organizations. Devoted
members of the Goshen United
Church, he has served at various
times on the board of elders and
Mrs. McKinley has been
president of ladies' groups.
Mr. McKinley was campaign
chairman for the building of the
Blue Water Rest Home, and has
been on the board of directors
ever since the home opened. He
is also a past president of the
former Huron TB Association,
and a Past Master of Huron
Lodge, As well, he is a Past
Patron of the Exeter Chapter of
the Order of the Eastern Star.
Politically Mr. McKinley has
been a staunch supporter of the
Progressive Conservative Party,
and 'in 1949 he was a candidate
in the federal riding of Huron

The Clintonian Club met at
the home of the President ) Mrs.
F. Curiirilings• • on Thursday
afternoon, September 2.
Meeting opened with the
Housewife's Creed followed by
the Lord's Prayer. The president
read a poem "On The Road"
Minutes of the previous meeting
were read and approved. The
treasurer gave a very good
financial statement.
Roll call was answered by 17
members naming a flower that
started with the same initial as
their last name.
A report on cards sent out
was given by Mrs. George
Glazier, Mrs. H. Adams reported
on flowers sent out the past
month. There had been 26 home
calls and 28 hospital calls made
to sick and shut-ins.
Winners of the Dutch
Auction were Mrs. C.
Cunningham and Mrs. H.
Ilanaghan, The mystery prize
went to Mrs, Frank Ceirantirigs,
The president closed the
meeting with the Mizpah
Benediction. Lima was served
and a social half hour over a cup
of tea closed off the afternoon.
Next meeting is at the home of
the riding which his son Robert
E. now represents for the same
party.
Mrs. McKinley is a past
Matron of the Exeter Chapter of
the Order of the Eastern Star,
Along with the many friends
and neighbours who called in
person to visit the popular
couple, on their anniversary, they
received numerous
congratulatory messages as well.
The Province of Ontario sent
them a framed scroll along with
a personal *telegram from
Premier William G. Davis. Also
at the provincial level, they
received messages from Hon.
C.S. MacNaughton and Clam
Wescott, executive assistant to
Premier Davis,
Prime Minister Pierre Elliott
Trudeau sent a telegram of
congratulations, as did
G overnor-General Roland
Michener, and leader of the
Opposition, Robert Stanfield.
The family presented their
parents with a lovely wall
mirror.

catcher in the Canadian ladies
fastball finals. We are sorry to
report she suffered a broken
ankle while on the trip to

Michigan, visited over the
weekend with her sister, Mrs. R.
Dalrymple and family.
Mr, and Mrs. William Burdge
of Angus visited with the family
over the weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. Eric Haite,
Toronto, spent the holiday
weekend with Mrs. D. Adams.
Miss Margaret Aikenhead,
London, spent the holiday with
her sister, Mrs. Y. Aidwinkle.
The building committee of
the new Brumfield United
Church held a very successful
auction sale at the bail park on
Saturday. Many thanks to all
who donated articles, and special
thanks to Mr. Bruce Rathweli,
