Clinton came home with one win and one loss in the WOAA Grand Championship Tournament this weekend, On Saturday, the Ponies downed Seaforth 6-2, with Pat Phillips going the route in the _ five inning contest. Neil Colquhoun, Paul Priestap, Dave Clynick, Don Peterson and Robert Harkes scored. Then on Sunday, Clinton out-hit Wingham, but ended up Fabians another. I am sure you will appreciate the reasons for this. In the case of Fabian Furniture Manufacturing Ltd., it was located in Milton and has now decided to locate in your municipality. "We are attempting to obtain sufficient financial and other in formation to amass the potential of the company." Mr. Denomme replied on July 23 stating that the company had absorbed all the costs of moving themselves and wondering if there was not some sort of non-forgivable loan available to the company. Mr. MacNaughton wrote to Mr. Denomme on July 30, 1969. "I understand" he said, "that the Ontario Development Corporation, both by telephone statements • and other information necessary to determine the company's q u al i f i cations for financial assistance. ODC is prepared to extend every consideration, except that of a forgivable loan which cannot be provided for a company moving from one designated community to another, for reasons I think you will readily understand. The matter of more conventional assistance certainly is a possibility, providing the firm meets normal qualifications for loans of this type." „ lie, went on to say that each company that asked for a loan was considered on its individual merits. He said an appointment with ODC would be set up whenever the company requested it. The company also applied for a loan from the Industrial Development Bank, a federally-run loan institution. Mr, Fabian Jr. charged last leaving seven runners on base. For the first time this year the boys let their guard down and committed five straight errors in the third, allowing three unearned runs to score, The game ended up 6-3 for Wingham. Steve Steep, Doug Reihl and David Clynick scored for Clinton. The next round is next week in Walkerton, but Clinton may not be able to compete as they begin their OBA playoffs over the weekend, winter that the company lost the loan because it did not have a deed to the property, He said the deed had been deliberately held up by town officials who wanted to drive the company out of town and perhaps get the patented U-bend machine which Mr. Fabian Sr. had invented. Mr. Fabian Jr. said he had attempted to pay the first mortgage payment to town clerk John Livermore but the clerk refused to accept it. Mr. Livermore said Wednesday that the payment had been due in March but was not made until June. He said he had been instructed by the town solicitor not to accept the late payment. Mr. Denomme says the matter of the deed and the delay in obtaining it by the Fabians was due to their slowness to close the deal. The closing date went by but the company had not come forward to close the deal he said so the town took action. The action took the form of a letter to the company saying it was renting the building on a month-to-month basis at $90 a month because it had not closed the deal. The town decided to do this, Mr. Denomme said, because it realized it had not made a good deal for the property. The only stipulation upon the company is the they must no,t.,„sellAhe „magi* fpr five years. The' `'company occupying a choice industrial site, he said, that has more land than they t need. Others have become interested in the five addition elates of property but it can not be used. The company can sit on the land he said, for five years without much trouble, then sell it at a profit. As long as the Fabians did For the third year in a row, Clinton Peewees will be representing the WOAA in the all-Ontario playoffs of the Ontario Baseball Association, The past two seasons the Poriles won the "B" championship and this year, with the decline in population, Clinton dropped back to the "C" category, Although the game ended 6-0 in favour of Clinton, the score was no indication of the BY DOUG PETERSON Paced by Robert Andrews, three goals, the Clinton water polo team sent Goderich home on the short end of a 9-1 match on Saturday. Andrews opened the scoring not move to close the deal, he said, the town had the chance of controlling the use of the additional land. But as soon as the company moved to close the deal, he said, the town knew it was over a barrel of its own making. The company said it tried to arrange for a $35,000 loan from a group of individuals in the town represented by the town solicitor, E. Beecher Menzies. But the Fabians refused to sign the agreement because of what Mr. Fabian said was "its stringent requirements." A copy of the agreement says the company had to agree to put all its property and assets as security for its loan which carried an annual interest rate of 15 per cent. The lenders had the right to dement( payment in full on 10 days' notice. The Fabians said the agreement was "highway robbery. They tried to take the business away." Relations by last winter had already cooled between the town and the company to the point that Mr. Denomme said he decided not to get involved any more with the company. Then during the summer the company was found guilty in provincial court on one charge of failing to meet Ontario Labour Department safety ,regulations. R faces six ether charges to be heard in court in September. Mr. Fabian Jr. was the company's counsel during the hearing and told Judge Glenn Hayes at that time that the company was being persecuted by the Department of Labour, the town council and the Public Utilities Commisssion. He explained to the tight, excitement-Oiled game, 'Leading off the first inning, Dave Counter was out swinging, Don Peterson followed with a hard-hit single, stole second base and scored on Neil "Weiner" Colquhourt's double, Colquhoun made it 2-0 when he scored on a wild pitch, Pitching his third game this season against Kincardine, Terry Gordner had to work a little harder than in the previous two games when he shut them out 3-0 and 11-0, He started with early in the first quarter on a blazing shot that went past goaler Betty Bedard. Other scorers were Pete Cameron (2), Doug Peterson (2), Paul Crittenden (1), and Paul Wheeler (1). News-Record reporter later that he was sure the PUC was overcharging his company for the amount of power it used. He said the PUC Manager, Gus Boussey, refused to listen to his claims. He said he was going to have Ontario Hydro inspect the wiring at the plant and tell him if there were any leaks which could use up so much power. He was told to contact the News-Record when the results of the survey were known. No further mention of the problem was ever made to this newspaper. Early this spring, Mayor Don Symons complained at a council meeting that while he was away at a convention, his wife received a telephone call from Mr. Fabian Jr. who wanted to talk to the mayor. "He refused to believe her when she said her husband was not home," the mayor said, "and used such language that the Mayor's wife became frightened." Relations didn't improve any when, the announcement was made that the Ex-Cell-0 Corporation was to build its new plant in Clinton. That day following the announcement, Mr. Fabian Jr, called Ross Strickland, president of Ex-Cell-O. Mr. Denomme said he was told by Mr. Strickland, that Mr. Fabian was extremely abusive of the town, the council and several individuals involved in town work. Following the lengthy telephone call, Mr. Strickland contacted Mr. Denamme to see what prompted the outburst. The London Free Press story was prompted by the report from council's August meeting when Mayor Symon's asked that the fire inspector be asked to inspect the Fabian property to see if old lumber piled $4000 on the property and carries no insurance on the building. The mayor said he was worried about the town's investment. Mr. Denomme said the mayor subsequently recieved a telephone call from Mr. Fabian Jr. accusing him of having the Fabian's telephone "bugged". The mayor denied the accusation. two strikeouts, then gave up his only walk of the game. Second baseman Dave Clynick scooped up a hard grounder for the third out. In the second inning, Kincardine picked up their first hit, but the batter was picked off by David Counter as he tried to steal third, Robert Harkes tried to snag a line drive in the third, but the ball hit the top of his glove and bounced out. It was one of three errors in the game, all on tough plays. After the dismal regular season in Intermediate Baseball action with Mitchell, the Colts have come to life with some heads-up ball playing, Last Wednesday in Mitchell a 12.6 win gave the young Colts a big shot in the arm. Brad Dutot hurled for seven innings then reliever Cam MacDonald came in to hold the game, Dutot was helped with double plays in the second and the third. Laurie Colquhoun and Robert Miller put Clinton in front 2-0 until the fourth when Mitchell picked up three hits and three walks, giving them a 4-2 lead. In the fifth the bases were loaded with two out. Butch Fleet and Don Bartliff belted back-to-back hits scoring three more runs. Clinton's big rally came in the sixth when Mitchell bobbled the ball three times and Stu Mustard. The Provincial Government has accepted the principle that Regional Development in Midwestern Ontario may not be the same as Regional Development in other parts of the province. The Honourable Darcy McKeough, Provincial Treasurer and Minister of Treasury and Edonomics conceded this point while meeting with the Board of Directors of the Midwestern Ontario Regional Development Council in Stratford last week. The Minister agreed with the assessment made by the Council that Midwestern Ontario has a unique urban-rural balance that must be interpreted in a different manner to other areas of the Province. Mr. McKeough made Stratford his first stop on a 10-region tour of Ontario where he will meet the Directors of each of the 10 Development Councils. The Provincial Treasurer said he was impressed with the proposed restructuring program of the Midwestern Development Council and said that the Council is the only vehicle that can bring together governments at all levels along with the private sector including business, industry and the man on the street. James C. Hayter of Goderich, President of M.O,R.D.C., said he felt the meeting was one of the best between Council and Government and will lead to a With the runner on second base, Kincardine lead-off batter Pat Riggin hit what looked like an easy triple, but Colquhoun snagged the ball deep in centre field, Clinton's defence kept coming to Qordner's aid again in the fourth and the fifth. With two on and two out, Dave Clynick made a fantastic stop by blocking the ball . with his out-stretched leg, then throwing Out the hitter at first base, In the Laurie Colquhoun and Hans Leppington cracked out singles, Before the last out, Clinton scored six runs to give the pitcher a good 11 to 4 lead. Doug Theisson and Bob McNaughton of Mitchell cracked a home run and a double to lead off the eighth. Coach Jim Livermore quickly brought fastballer Cam MacDonald into the game and he saved the game. Clinton's final run came in the ninth when Little Joe Livermore walked, stole second and third base, then scored on Archie Pickett's second hit. The second game of the three out of five series was a hard fought game with Clinton coming out on top with a 2.0 win, Archie Pickett returned to his usual form and held Mitchell to two hits, both by Doug Thiesson. In going all the way, strengthening of the Council's role in Regional Development in Midwestern Ontario. Allan Ross, Warden of Wellington County and a Vice-President of the Development Council stated he felt that following the Council's submission on the Phase Design for Development that will be made later this month, that a joint effort will be made by the Development Council and the Provincial Government to hold further meetings in an effort to settle the problems and unanswered questions that arose during public hearings a few months` ago on the Phase I: Analysis. Reeve Charles Thomas of Grey Township, Huron County, said it appeared the Council had made some headway in convincing the Government that a better financial arrangement must be forthcoming in the future. He said the Council made a strong presentation during discussions with the Minister on the subject of finances and membership. Mr. McKeough agreed with Mrs. Betty McMillan, a member of Stratford City Council and an executive member of the Development Council, when she pointed out the role of the Council has changed considerably since its founding days in 1956. The Provincial Treasurer praised the Council for its alertness and adaption to changing conditions and times and that the emerging role is probably more in tune with 'today's concern for quality and environment than some other regions of the Province. Walter W. Cowing, General Manager of the Midwestern Development Council, is presently preparing a documen on the future role of the Council following the Board's discussion with Mr. McKeough that will assist the Province in their clarification o f Regional Development Councils and the role they must assume in the future. Prepare forA A mon g the most plantin g attractive garden flowers are the bulb-forming plants, whose blossoms add the first clash of color to the spring garden. Generally, bulbs planted hi early fall — from about September 15 on — will produce the best bloom. Horticultnristt With the Ontario Department of Agriculture and Food remind gardeners to dig the toll thoroughly and work in fertilizer before planting. A fertile sandy loam soil is best, but almost any soil with adequate drainage is suitable. Lighten heavy soils by adding sand and Organic matter. Compost or well-rotted manure will help raise the fertility level.
