The U.S. Department of
Transportation is considering
setting up a consumer
information programme to
advise the public on the
susceptibility to damage of
various makes and types of
automobiles, The Ontario Safety
League says that a bill has been
drafted that would require
insurance companies to supply
DOT with accident claim data
on vehicle damage and personal

a description of how such

A gas station attendant
eyed a sunflovver-decorated
Volkswagon while the driver, in
beard and beads, counted coins
to see how much was available,
Finally, the attendant said,
"Some gas, or shall I just water
the flowers?" Quoted by the
Ontario Safety League, from
Reader's Digest.

Drivers are reminded that
cars don't "Stop on a dime."
The Ontario Safety League
points out that even at the
modest speed of 30 mph an alert
driver, with good brakes, needs
more than twice the width of
the average intersection to 'top
his car.

On Tuesday morning of this
week a chartered bus left for a
trip to the very beautiful Elora
Gorge and Owen Sound.
Arriving in Elora in pouring
rain about 11;00 a.m., the
tourists proceeded to the
covered pavilion in the
Conservation Park where they
lunched. By noon the sun was
shining and they were able to
view the scenery though were
not able to descend to the
bottom of the gorge as it was
too slippery.
Then on to see Inglis Falls
near Owen Sound, travelling via
Highway 6. This is a very
spectacular falls and worth
seeing. The lovely shade trees
provided welcome coolness after
a hot bus ride. Following on into
Owen Sound past Harrison Park,
the group visited the Grey
County and Owen Sound
Museum. An Indian exhibit
there was made more interesting
by the commentary provided by
the curator. A pioneer cabin is
located on the premises and
another older one is being
erected using handmade shingles
made on the site.
After supper, the tour
travelled home via
Southampton, Port Elgin etc.

If you're considering buying a
house, either sign up right away
or reconcile yourself to a higher
interest rate for your mortgage,
at least over the next couple of
months. The ,yinancial Post's
Frederic Wagniere says that may
sound like a high-pressure pitch
from your real estate agent, but
in fact it's based on current
consensus among Canada's
leading money men. They
expect to see an increase soon of
one quarter of one percentage
point in interest on National
Housing Act mortgages, which
gentlemen went on the trip as
well as other friends.

they paused for a time. Then,
continuing on to Vancouver,
they visited .their son and met
their first grandchild. They took

At Council meeting this
week, building permits were
issued to the following: George
Levis for a garage valued at
$3,000; Robert L. Beacom, a
dwelling, $14,500; Joe Hart, a
sunporch, $1000; Roy Tyndall,
a swelling, $7,000. Permits were
granted to Roy Tyndall and
William Craig for removal of
buildings.
now range 9% — 91/2% on
single-family dwelling.
Conventional mortgage rates
may edge up a notch too. If you
plan to shop for a bank loan, on
the other hand, the news is
better: rates for these are likely
to remain steady, WagniJre says
in The Financial Post. The
expected increase in mortgage
rates could disappear during the
fourth quarter, a time when life
insurance companies
traditionally allocate new funds
to the market.
