In the
Great Outdoors
BY ERNIE TAYLOR
The Trent-Severn Waterway which stretches from Port Severn on
the Georgian. Bay across the prime vacationlamis of Ontario to
Trenton on Lake Ontario is, in my opinion, the finest inland cruising
waters in North America, My favourite stretch of this waterway is
the Severn. River which starts at the top end of Lake Coachiching
and flows through to Georgian Bay, There is a great variety of
scenery, delightful villages and interesting people,
One advantage, especially for email boat owners, is the fact that
this stretch of water is comparatively sheltered, well marked by
navigational aids and excellent, up-to-dote hydrographic charts are
available, Locking service is provided free for all boats showing
license numbers or registered, and copies of the Safe Boating Guide
and Canal Regulations must be carried.
I would also warn boaters to strictly observe the six miles an hour
speed limits where these signs are posted as any wake going through
rock cuts or approaching locks will set up excessive turbulence for
other boaters. One old friend of mine at Severn Falls was
complaining bitterly to me about the non-observance of the speed
limit in that area by water skiers.
• "Why", he said, "they come down through that narrow channel
at the rapids with six skiers on behind. A fellow has nowhere to go,
just take for the shore."
The names themselves are magic in this area, 'Lost Channel',
`Gloucester Pool' and the 'Big Chute' where the world's only marine
railway still operates. I hope you have the chance of enjoying the
Severn sometime this summer. Just follow the chart and obey the
Rules of the Road Afloat. As my Severn Falls friend says, "They're
Made for your protection."
