Professor H. K. Kalbfleisch and his wife watched a pair of wrens housecleaning at their place recently. They were watching through binoculars and so got all the expressions of the hardworking pair. Once cleaned out, they started to rebuild to their own design. Mr. Wren frequently stopped to proclaim to all and sundry, and his mate in particular, the advantages of this abode. The family of wrens in the apartment in the pine tree tumbled out about the first of July. Lucy saw the tiny butterfly-like birds in the lilac at the corner of the sun room on the fourth. Also on that day the crested fly catchers took flight. A tree obscured her vision so she couldn't count the fledgelings but she knew they were leaving as there was a great circling around from the nest to a mountain ash tree nearby, On the fifth there was no sign of a flycatcher anywhere. The gray squirrel appears to have taken her young out of the attic at "The Hut" — at least Lucy hopes she has done so. And before Mrs, Gray Squirrel begins storing nuts up there for the winter, Lucy hopes the roof will be repaired so that she and her family cannot scamper about making a. mess of chewing up wall paper, etc., stored up there. It seems the old one had a special liking for music. With the scramble of feet, they ran up and down the scales and vocal exercise books. Last year it was the starlings but Carl covered their entrance last autumn. Then the winter blasts must have lifted them a bit. Carl saw this fat gray squirrel hanging around the feeding station, picking up the sun flower seeds last winter and early spring. Lucy begrudged her the seeds put out for the birds but Carl admired her beautiful tail as she sat on a low'corner post. And for once he didn't seem to mind that the birds had been robbed. Lucy was afraid that he was going to make a pet of the animal. One day he wheeled her chair to the window saying, "Look!" And hanging onto the bird bath having a long drink of rusty water was Mrs. Gray Squirrel. He was sure that it was she which was in the attic, He'd see her climb the lilac tree at the corner and go over the dormer windows but by the time he'd get to the front of the house, she had disappeared. One day when he got there, he saw her nose sticking out of a crack. He stood perfectly still and she came out and went back in again. It's a mixed marriage. Her mate is black and the young fry resemble both parents. That squirrel wants to live with us! One night recently she came along the path to where we were sitting outside the door, Carl started talking to her in an affectionate tone of voice. Lucy said nothing. She didn't want her jumping up on her shoulder as one did a few years ago. But she found a nut and went off. There is too much danger of rabies for such close association. It takes the wrens to chase the squirrels. Lucy has observed both the black and gray squirrels flying with an irate wren in close pursuit. One peck of that sharp bill is enough to teach any squirrel to leave wrens' nests alone, And the robins, too, make a big fuss when the squirrels rob their nests. Sitting quietly in the garden in the evening brings to sight many bits of nature, Floating through the air at quite a height came a tiny white parachute. And when the breeze was cut off in front of the sun room window a dandelion seed was deposited in the bed where now a few pansy faces are looking out since the bulb tops have died. Lucy often wondered why so'inany dandelions grew there. Across the cement walk in front of her chair a dew worm was making its way from a patch of green grass on one side to a dried out patch on the other. What was taking him, Lucy has no idea. He was having a hard journey and was reaching out first in one direction and then another for a softer place on which to crawl. When Carl's attention was drawn to the worm, he picked him up and carried him off to his can at the barn where he feeds worms for his yet-to-be-taken fishing trip. Looking up to the sky to see whether the sun had set or not, Lucy saw a kingfisher sitting on the hydro wire. We aren't far from the river but it is the first one she has ever sighted in the village.
