Mark Nicholson hurled a great gable. His control was excellent and he only faced 25 batters in the seven-inning contest. Eight batters went down by strikeouts and two superb catches by Robert Hakes and David Clynick helped Mark in the fourth inning. Clinton committed two fielding errors and Mark walked five but David Counter caught three runners trying to steal bases and on Ponies win 7th game I/ /SO Ii iiit'/' Clynities catch he threw out a runner at third base. The Crediton pitcher held Clinton down to eight hits including a triple and a double by Terry Gordner. Centre fielder Neil Calquhoun tracked out a double and a single and scored two runs. Gordner and Don Peterson picked -up two runs. Three walks to Dave Counter helped him score three runs. Single runs were scored by David Clynick, Doug Sehoenhals and Mark Nicholson. plaque. Field Day champions honored were Jerry Steegstra, The Orioles won the Clinton News—Record Trophy by trouncing the Yankees 21-4 and 13-5 in the Kinsmen Pee Wee The Clinton Legion was represented in this year's Legion Zone baseball tournament by the Clinton Ponies. With their 3.0 victory over Kincardine and a 10-2 win over Goderich, Clinton now advances to the District finals to be held this year in Walkerton on July 10. Terry Gordner had a top fielding team behind him in the five inning 3.0 win over Kincardine. He faced only 16 batters. The lone base runner Walked in the second but was left stranded on second base. The infielders assisted on eight ground outs and the remainder outs were fly outs and one strikeout. Clinton blew its chances for a high scoring game when they left the bases loaded in the third and feurth. In the second Mark Nicholson wrapped out a double and in trying to reach home on Doug Sehoenhal's single was tagged mit, The third started out with a ground out by Paul Priestap. Terry Gardner reached first on an error, David Counter walked and both advanced on Don Peterson's single. With the bases loaded Neil Coiquhoun hit to the third baseman who picked off Gardner at the plate. Clinton's big rally came in the fourth with Nicholson on and two out. Paul Priestap singled then Gordner followed with a triple. Gordner scored on Counter's single. Dave Counter, Don Peterson and Neil Giants 16.12 An extra inning had to be played by the Giants in order to win the Gerry Leesen Squirt Trophy in the Kinsmen House League Baseball Competition. Pour runs in the sixth gave the Giants a 16-12 win over the Reds. In the fifth, the kids had everyone excited, The score was 12-8 in favour of the Giants, Frank Ellerby and Pat Jordan lead off the bottom of the inning with singles and closed the score to 12-10. The next two batters struck out. Ricky Ducharme walked and scored on Danny Holmes' double. Holmes stole home to tie the game 12-12. Left at third base was Steve Elder, Robbie Blake had struck out the three batters he faced in the top of the 5th. The Reds lost their scoring punch in the sixth, as Larry Weill retired the first three batters. House League finals. In the championship game the Ponies started off again with great defensive work, three up and three down in the first, then a double play in the second started by Pat Phillips to second baseman David Clynick and back to Mark Nicholson. Clinton led the game off with a double by Dave Counter and single by Don Peterson. Counter scored the only run on Neil Coiquhoun's sacrifice out. David Clynick's single scored Robert Haricot in the second. Goderich picked up a run in the third on two singles and a fielding error. Mark Nicholson and Robert Harkes scored on Pat Phillips' single in the fourth. Pat Phillips had his biggest troubles in the fifth when Beacom led off with a single, Carroll was walked and Schweitzer singled, loading the bases. On the next play Goderich picked up their last run when shortstop Robert Harkes couldn't control a hard line drive. Neil Colquhoun singled to score Dave Counter and Don Peterson then scored himself oil Nicholson's sacrifice hit. Again hi the sixth Clinton picked up one hit and scored three runs. Terry Gordner, Dave Counter and Pat Phillips were walked and scored on Neil Colquhouri's single and two pass balls by the catcher. Run scorers for the Yankees were: John McMahon, 3; Larry Clinton Colts suffered their third defeat of the season, losing 6-3 to Arva. Arva picked up six runs on 10 hits and seven errors, off pitchers Cam McDonald and Don Bartliff, Clinton picked up their only runs in the ninth inning when Hans Leppington led off with a double. Then Doe Miller and Dave Fawcett were hit by the pitcher to load the bases, This set the scene for Newt Collins to come in and bat for the injured Joe Livermore. After a conference on the mound Clinton wins Goderich managed only one unearned run in the fifth off Terry Gordner. Terry lead the fifth off with two back-to-back walks then the run came on a single into left field. Prom that point on, with the bases loaded, Gordner bore down and struck out the next three batters, Goderich had only three hits, all singles. Doug "Boogie" Schoenhals and Neil Colquhoun made several key catches in the outfield, While Gordner had The Ponies won their seventh game in League action June 28, with an easy 30-5 win over Blyth. On Saturday night, June 26, the Colts defeated Walkerton 5.1 in an exhibition game played in Clinton. Brad Dutot pitched the victory giving up four hits and striking out 11 batters. The previous Sunday in Walkerton the Colts lost 4-1 getting their only run on Doc Miller's home run, 10-1 little trouble with Goderich hitting, Clinton belted out 14 hits lead by Paul Priestap with a triple and a double. David Counter, Neil Coiquhoun, Doug Riehl and Terry Gardner had two hits apiece. The presentation of awards and certificates to students at Holniesville Public School was well attended Tuesday morning. The graduating class at the school made their final appearance before the student body as they will be attending area high schools in the fall, F. E. Madill, Board of Education superintendent, distributed the certificates. Another feature of the morning's program was the presentation of diplomas to the kindergarten class at the school with each little student wearing a huge black scholar's hat. Their awards were given to them by R. M, Elliott, chairman of the Huron County Board of Education. Jamie Thompson and Shelley Burgess were the top boy and girl respectively in the Grade 8 class and earned the general proficiency awards as well as mint sets donated by the Order of Poresters, Benmillet, with the presentations made by Mrs. Gerry Ginn and Mrs. Harry Montgomery. The SS No. 4 Community Club mint sets for English and History went to Rodney Cox and Jan Ginn respectively. Mrs. Jim Lobb made the presentation to Rodney and Mrs. Ray Bird to Jan. Clere-Vu Auto Wreckers donated a mint set to Irene Webs who was the top Grade 8 student in geography. Olen Price made that presentation, The Taylors Corners Community Club mint sett went to Henry DeGroof for mamathematics with y the presentation made by Mrs. Claude Sinclair and to Nancy Koene for Science with Mrs, Ted Johnston making that award. Honorable mention for general proficiency In Grade 5 went to Helen Ilartniari. Her name will be engraved on a Brenda Wise, Rusty Ormandy, Teresa Steegstra, Gary Tebbutt, Joyce IvIellwain, Peter Thompson and Janet Steegstra.
