It was from these words by Coleridge that the sailboat X.anadu, launched recently from the Bayfield harbour, was named. Xanadu is of interest to the residents of Bayfield because it is one of the first boats built by a full-time boat yard in the village. Ted Gozzard, who supervised the job and did much of the work himself, says that the boat "came to us as a bare hull," from the Douglas Marine Company in Port Stanley. It is 31 feet long and about 91/2 feet wide. Mr. Gozzard says that the boat was "completely fitted out by us" with mahogany and stainless steel trimmings. Some of its features are diesel engines with a fuel-range of 400 miles, and two cooling systems; an integral system used in salt water, and a raw water system which cools the water that's in the engine. The speed of the boat under sail is about eight knots. It has a Karen wins award Karen Gemeinhardt was chosen this year to be the recipient of the Ruth Hayman Elliot Award. This special award, provided by donations from friends of the late Mrs. Elliot as a memorial, is annually presented to a student from Bayfield, for general proficiency in school. Karen, chosen by her teachers and a representative of the Student Council, is 13 years old and has just completed grade eight. The award, of $25 and a dictionary, was presented to Karen on behalf of the committee by Mr. Oddleifson, at the Brucefield school. Last year it was won by Cathy Logan. fiberglass hull, and weighs just under 10,000 pounds, The finishing touch is a hand-carved mahogany name-board on the stern, The inside of the boat is fitted with sleeping accommodations for seven people.. There is an enclosed head, and separate galley, Numerous shelves and cupboards 011 in all the extra spaces, so not an inch is wasted. Ted Gozzard and Charles McLaren are the owners of the boat yard which produced Xanadu. Mr. Gozzard from Bayfield, Mr. McLaren from Highgate, and Don Lindsay from Bayfield' spent about three months building the boat. The boat yard has been in operation in Bayfield for two years. They will manufacture a boat for someone who wishes them to do so and have begun to get work from as far away as Perry Sound, Windsor, and Sarnia. The boat yard also manufactures cement hulls. This means that a covering of cement three-quarters of an inch thick coats the hull. One advantage of cement is that it is less expensive than some other materials: for example, it is one-third the cost of fiberglass. Xanadu belongs to Dr. Don Monroe of St. Marys and his family. The proud owners plan to take the boat on a cruise in Georgian Bay for its first big excursion. It has been out on Lake Huron several times already. The Monroe family have five boys, so will have no lack of crew. The family have owned a boat of one kind or another for about six years, and feel now that they are ready for the 31 foot Xanadu. They are all looking forward to their first big trip with her, for, as Dr. Monroe says, "She is a dream to sail." 1969 FORD Country Squire, 10 passenger stationwagoti 1969 TOWNSMAN stationwagOn BAYFIELD TEL. 565.2829 BLUEWATER HIGHWAY (No. 21) AT EIAYFIELt) (Formerly Bayfield Locker Servica) WE NOW HAVE TAKE OUT ORDERS MIi M EAT& VEGETABLES BAYFIELD TEL 565-2829 R tisRHRE RANGE OF FISH & CHIPS and DEEP FRIED CHICKEN FEATURING ENGLISH STYLE I It', I I Sex:, COMPANY JUST ARRIVED? However, sometimes people are not as kind to the environment as they should be, and they leave their rubbish . behind. The Bayfield Lions Club takes it upon itself to gather groups of volunteers periodically to clean up trash On the beach. This is one of the "unsung" things they do, and they deserve thanks from the community for this boost to the ecology. .
