St. Joseph's girl stars at meet
BY R S, ATKEY
Dave Brazeau, head of the
French Department at Clinton
District Secondary School,
registered a "hole-in-one" at
Clinton Lions Club's annual golf
tournament Wednesday
afternoon last,
It came on the 1.16-yard
fifth hole at Seaforth Golf Club
nine-hole course, with three
playing partners as witnesses. He,
was using a nine-iron.
Fred II, Elliott, veteran
Clinton golfer, won the
tournament after a play-off with

Two Clinton teams swept the
championships in the Public
School Softball Tournament
held in Clinton last Saturday.
The girls had high hopes of
winning and received a big score
in their first game in the
prize for driving "most balls in
creek"; Capt. Ed Wiebe, CFB
Clinton, was adjudged
"best-dressed golfer"; and
Antoine "Red" Garon, Lions
Club president, was voted
"worst golfer" for a
"well-directed creek shot".
Joe Murphy, as chairman, and
Stewart Taylor as treasurer, were
in charge of the tournament,
with President Garon as
master-of-ceremonies. Joe
Murphy presided for the
presentation of prizes.
Fifty Lions and their golfing
friends participated, in the
tournament, including that
lifelong golf veteran, Dr. Walter
A. Oakes, one of the charter
members of the Lions Club
formed 35 years ago. A
smorgasbord dinner was served
in the Club House.
morning against Calvin Christian.
At the end of four and one half
innings Calvin was ahead 8-7. In
the bottom of the fifth Julie
Howse led off with a single then
Cathy Johnson belted a triple
and came in home for the
Neilans, Debbie Johnston and
Cindy Collins. The next game
for the girls was an easy 38-0
victory over Holmesville for the
semi-finals. Debbie Johnston
pitched a strong third game in
the 13-6 victory for the
championship over Hullett. Patti
Kay, Carol Colquhoun, Ruth
Ann Neilans, Debbie Johnston
and Julie Howse scored two runs
each. Patricia Anstett, Cathy
Johnson and Cindy Collins
scored the other three runs.
The real surprise of the day
was Clinton's stunning victory
over Hullett in the opening game
of boys' competition. Hullett
had a strong pitcher in Joe
Flynn but Clinton's top fielding
and David Counter's change of
pace pitching helped defeat
Hullett. The Clinton boys had to
come from behind to score two
runs in the bottom of the fifth
for the 6-5 win.
Claire Colquhoun and
Counter pitched the next game
and it was another close 6-5
squeaker over Brucefield. Steve
Cook, Barry Welch, Paul Garrow',
and Greg Butler scored first
inning runs.
Neil Colquhoun and Bill
Irwin scored in the third to
make the score 6.1. Brucefield
came back in the fourth and
fifth with four runs but two big
fielding plays helped out in the
fifth,
The championship game was
a thriller between two clubs who
in past years were usually
knocked out in their first games.
The Calvin Christian boys really
gave the local boys a battle.
Clinton went ahead 6-0 in the
first half of the first inning on
runs by Robin McAdam, Barry
Welch, Paul Garrow, Greg
Butler. Bill Irwin and Neil
Colquhoun.
Calvin School put across
three runs in the first, another in
the second and the fourth. Steve
Cook scored on Paul Garrow's
single in the fourth to give an
extra run. With two on and two
out Counter had Ralph Bakker
hit an easy fly ball out to Neil
Colquhoun to end the game.
The committee are to be
highly congratulated on a well
organized day and they wish to
express their thanks to the many
volunteers who helped at
umpiring, scoring and cheering
on the teams.
