FOR TOP VALUE AND BETTER SERVICE Rely On The Friendly Guys At Conklin's Lucy is home again but she is almost afraid to mention it lest some whim of fate plunge her back into hospital again as in early April. She appreciated the thoughtfulness of friends and get well wishes which helped alleviate her disappointment at being obliged to be away from home for many of the spring flowers. since her return to "The Hut" Lucy has been literally absorbing the beauty of the garden from her wheel chair in the pun room while Carl has been planting the vegetable garden and watering his new little fruit trees. The cherry trees, peaches, pears, etc. are laden with bloom and give great promise of a good fruit crop, And with the dry weather the bees should, be busy, although all Lucy has been able to spot is the odd bumble bee and a humming bird, The Baltimore Orioles have been systematically going over the forsythia and fruit blossoms. They pick off many insects. But on Saturday evening May 22, Mrs. Charles Bell was looking out her window and spotted a bird bugily pulling off the blossoms, biting off the shucks which 'fell to the ground and eating the embryo cherries. She couldn't identify the bird so came over to ask Carl, It was growing late; the light not too good and the bird kept dodging out of sight. But on Sunday morning he saw it fly into the Bell's cherry tree from across the road. It turned out to be a female rose-breasted grosbeak, And was she busy! The blossoms were pulled off at the rate of about one a second. "It's a good thing there isn't a whole flock of them", remarked Miss K. Reid, a guest at 'pie Hut". The rose-breasted grosbeak is a rather shy bird. One seldom sees the male. They feed on seeds and insects so the female's ingenious method of trapping any insects as well as getting the embryo cherry assured her of food. No doubt she is nesting somewhere close by. A bowl of various kinds of tulips centered the dining room table. Carl had picked them so that Lucy might enjoy them at closer range. Callers were sitting around the table, commenting on the tulips turning up to the light above the table. Suddenly one woman leaned over and with a paper handkerchief caught something in the petals of a big white peony-flowered tulip. Lucy looked questioningly at her. "It was a spider", she said. "If you wish to live and thrive, let a spider run alive", quoted one of those assembled. Carl agreed with the latter. "Well", she said, "Lucy certainly wouldn't want it dropping into her soup." "It wasn't going to drop in", commented another. "It was staying in the tulip to catch flies, and it was doing no harm". So the caller who thought she was doing a good deed felt quite squashed. Away back in Lucy's childhood she remembers some old admonition about not killing a spider as it would surely rain thereafter. Perhaps the death of that one spider brought on the gentle rain on Victoria Day! Care in spraying prevents pollution For the farmer involved in any spraying operation, cleanliness and care ensure a more thorough job and less danger to the environment. Professor J.R. Scott, School of Engineering, University of Guelph, offers some hints for efficient maintenance of spraying equipment both during and after the spraying season. First, he says, sprayer efficiency will be maintained only by keeping the unit clean. The outfit should not be put away, even over a weekend, with spray residues in the tank, pump or hoses. Always refill the tank with clean water arid pump it through the nozzles to thoroughly flush out the system.Clean all screens frequently, especially if the water supply is questionable. To prevent danger to the environment, Professor Scott offers this advice. Be wary of spraydrift. Too-high nozzle pressure will break sprayed liquids into small droplets that can drift for miles. Spraying higher than necessary into the air can also cause drifting. Never spray in a breeze of more than 2 to 3 miles per hour. Too much spraying Will pollute or poison the toil underneath the tree or plants and may reduce or eliminate beneficial insects or oraanisms which also fight pest; and diseases. NFU concerned over independeni factories Professor Scott adds that dumping spray tanks or washing equipment into municipal storm sewers or streams, or ground directly drained by a stream or well will surely pollute the water and adversely affect the environment. It is better to find a natural pocket remote from wells, streams, or domestic livestock. Empty chemical containers should be buried in a similar location. Caution is also required in refilling spray tanks from streams or ponds to prevent any back-flow due to faulty valve systems from flowing back into the stream itself. This is often the cause of fish kill or other damage to the water system, One recommended measure is to use suction hoses or injector-type tank fillers equipped with effective foot valves. Another is using an empty oil drum at the suction hose. Modern spray equipment is discussed in Ontario Department of Agriculture and Food Publication 256, Field Weed Sprayers, and Publication 159, Low Volume Spraying For Ontario OrchardS. Both can be obtained from county agricultural offices or from the Information Branch, Ontario Department of Agriculture an Food, Parliament Buildings Toronto 182, Ontario. The National Farmers' Union Ontario sub-committee for dairy is concerned that not only are dairy farmers suffering tinder the rigid policies set out by . the federal and proviricial governments for the industry, but also for small independent or farmer-owned cheese factories and milk processing plants. Due to the drop in production of Milk, and reduced production quotas many are going to be forced out of business. Recently, the plants supply quotas were established for the year. Ontario iS divided into three regions - Eastern, Central and Western. In Eastern Ontario the supply quota has been set at 67 percent in Central at 80 percent and Western Ontario at 68 percent. This means that plants will be allowed to buy that percentage of milk compared to the amount processed in the past. "For many w of them, operating their plants this much below capacity will make it impossible to surVive," says Wm. Langdon, Chairman of the NFU Dairy COMMitteel 4'The small to medium sized -cheese factories in Ontario have, been the backbone of the industrial milk industry for years, and have been the producers Of natural Canadian cheddar theest that has become renowned in many countries for its excellence. Now government regulations and manipulation by multi-national processing corporations and manipulation by multi-national processing corporations seem intent on putting them out of business by economic pressures. If these practices continue there may come a day when cheddar won't be made, and only processed cheeses will be available." lie said many of the factori are• facing a real dilemma because they have a Market fo their product. but won't be abl to' get enough Milk Wider thei quota to meet the requirements Mr, Langton said figu indicate that in the first thre months of 1971, ch production was up, over 1070 "This could mean that we ar not necessarily going to be sho of cheese," he said, "but, tha the large multi-product plant are switching from th production of butter and Mil powder to the manufacture o cheese - but not necessaril cheddar cheese." He Said it again become evident that th huge corporations are influencing government dairy policies, both federal and provincial, while the farmer, independent factories and the cOnsurners are not even consideration, WE WILL INSTALL SIDING Or Arrange For A Contractor FREE ESTI MAi ES On Entire Job GRAND BEND 23.8-2374 OWEN SOUND 376-34181 4 SOUTHAMPTON 797-3245 THEDFORD 296-4991 C.M.H.C.
