YOU ALWAYS DO BETTER WITH IGA'S FAMOUS MONEY SAVING... ja- mb' pews

root - my window,
BY SHIRLEY J. KELLER
Past Wardens of Huron County who are still living were honored
last Friday in Goderich by Huron County Council. Those
presented with pins were: (back, left to right) George Armstrong,
Glenn Webb, Walter Forbes, Don McKenzie, Bill Dale, George
McCutcheon, Harvey Johnston, Jim Hayter, Harry Gowdy, Cal
Krauter, Ralph Jewell; (centre) Alex Alexander, Ivan Forsythe,
John Armstrong,- Earl Campbell, Roy Westcott,__Ken ,Stewart;
Alvin Kerslake, Art Nicholson, Ben Tuckey; (front) John V.
Fisher, John Morrissey; Murray Gaunt MPP Huron-Bruce; Robert
E. McKinley, MP for Huron; 1971 Warden Jack Alexander; Hon.
C. S. MacNaughton, Minister of Highways and Transport for
Ontario; Cecil Johnston, George Feagan, Brown Smyth and Hugh
Berry.
Haw, you ever had the
nagging feeling that
thing is dead wrong but
is nothing you can do
ut it? Have you ever been so
you were actually sick to
our stomach and knew all the
me things would get a whole
worse before they got better?
• It isn't a very nice feeling I
tell you but that's just the
ay I , felt during the recent
Way weekend when I was
travelling by car along the
highway with my family.
We were bound for the City
of Detroit, the great Zoological
Park to be exact. The youngest
Keller had never met all the
animals who frequent that
marvellous place so we decided
to make the trip that sunny but
not-too-hot May day.
We left mid-morning, around
10 a.m. • . . and from the time
we left our home until we
returned again, we were
surrounded by scruffy-looking,
rather docile teenagers who were
constantly underfoot along
sidewalks and footpaths,
sideroads and main highways.
I'm not against hitchhikers. I
can remember as a small child
that my mother often used that
method of transportation to get
from one point to another.
Those were the days when few
families had automobiles or bus
fare and when the need arose to
travel (our jaunts were often
into the city for medical
attention for me, a childhood
victim of polio) we often used
our thumbs.
SO you can see I know what
it is to hitchhike' . . . and how
truly thankful one can be for an
expense-free journey from point
A to point B.
But hitchhiking has become a
disease with our young people, I
fear . . . and even that in itself is
not, all bad, I suppose, except
that a very large number of these
tagalong types look like cavemen
out of the dark ages who are
neither clean nor in touch with
living. In short, these kids are
frightening reminders to folks
like me that something is amiss
in today's youthful population
when in the midst of some of
the most affluent times in
history we are being overrun
with dirty, raggy kids who are
content to beg for their
existence.
I got a sickening churning
sensation in the pit of my
stomach as we sped along the
highway and saw young people
curled up like hoboes in the
ditches, dirty and bearded and
completely uncaring.
My heart flipped like a drop
of water on a hot griddle as I
noted young girls with hard
faces and curved spines
slouching beside a tangled-haired
boy toting a bed roll.
I was tempted to kick the
kids who were too lazy to stand
and thumb a ride like men but
preferred to stretch out along
the roadside with their thumbs
just barely raised to denote their
hopes for one of the
"establishment" to stop and
offer them a nlush seat.
I thought about the youth
hostels all over this country, put
there by hard earned dollars for
people like these who were
working very hard to appear like
the scum of the earth. I
wondered why the government
didn't go ALL the way for these
kids — maybe providing buses
which would crisscross the
nation lifting these so-called
"beautiful people" up from the
roadsides and into a complete
welfare state.
You may charge that I don't
understand these kids, what
motivates them and who has
taught them to think as they do.
I must admit you are right. I
simply cannot comprehend why
any human being would chose to
be a transient — a kind of
bothersome bum who doesn't
even have the guts to stand erect
when hitchhiking or to attempt
to be clean and courteous for his
benefactors.
I hate myself for the kind of
thoughts I have about these kids
and what's more disturbing, I
hate myself for the attitude
which is building up within me
toward all long-haired youths
who haven't yet learned to say a
simple "thankyou" for a dinner
invitation or a small favor.
I'm purely heartsick over the
young people who will one day
be our leaders and I pray some
miracle will take place before I
must bow to their legislation.
SPEAKING TO THE WORLD
AND 100 YEARS OF
MEASURED PROGRESS
"Speaking to the World", a
'15 cent stamp marking the
inaugural of powerful new
transmitters for Radio Canada
International, and "100 Years of
Measured Progress", a six cent
stamp commemorating the
100th anniversary of national
census taking in Canada, will be
issued by the Post Office
Department June 1.
The Radio Canada stamp was
designed by Burton Kramer of
Toronto, Ontario. It measures
40mm by 24mm and a quantity
of 10 million is being printed.
Hans Kleefeld, also of Toronto,
designed the Census
commemorative which measures
30mm by 24mm. A total of 25
million is being printed of this
issue. Both stamps are being
printed in three colour
lithography by the Canadian
Bank Note Company of Ottawa.
Radio Canada International is
the shortwave transmission
service of the Canadian
Broadcasting Corporation. It was
inaugurated February 25, 1945
with the dual purpose of
providing Canadian armed forces
abroad with news and
entertainment from home, and
'projecting Canada to listeners in
other countries.
Canada's national census is
conducted every ten years by
the Dominion Bureau of
Statistics. Its original
constitutional purpose was, and
still is today, to provide
information on which electoral
representation is determined. At
an estimated cost of $35 million,
and with the recruitement of
some 48,000 temporary
workers, the 1971 census
promises to be the biggest
peace-time operation of its kind
this country has ever
experienced.
