There is' a beautiful bit of
literature being printed on
vellum, framed for hanging in
offices, and worn out in
sermons, which begins, "Go
placidly amid the noise and
haste and remember what peace
there may be in silence! As far as
possible, without surrender, be
on good terms with all persons .
. . " Etc., etc. It was printed in
this newspaper slightly over a
year ago.
It is usually attributed to a
17th century tablet in a
Baltimore, Maryland, Church.
Sorry 'bout that, Chief, but
'tain't so. It was written by Max
Ehrmann, and carries the title he
gave it, "Desiderata". And it is a
most thoughtful and beautiful
piece of creative writing. But
this writer has only seen it
properly credited one time in
the hundreds of times he has
seen it.
There is a group of "rules for
taking over a country" which
purports to be a list compiled by
the communists and found • in
1917 or 1,919 by the S. Army
-41 Dusseldorf, .t.aermany., „The
F.B.I. reported that the hoax has
no connection with truth. Lots
of right-wing groups like to use
it, though it describes their
tactics about as well as any
one's, but its origin is totally
spurious.
Now, if you're one of those
people who don't like to be
disturbed by truth, turn to the
crossword puzzle right here,
'cause this particular column is
intended only for those who
believe Jesus was right when he
said, "the Truth shall make you
free." (Jn. 8:32).
There is a whole vast can of
garbage being compiled to attack
the "peace symbol". One man in
Oklahoma listed a long
docurnehtation, and every single
documentation he gave was
erroneous to his purpose! And
two Masonic bodies distributed
the attack.
The peace symbol was made
up of the semaphore code signs
for "N" and "D" (ask any sailor
who remembers his code). It is
no more a symbol of a broken
cross than the Indian Swastiea is
the same as the fascist, or the
star in Texas' flag is the same as
the star in Communist China's
flag.
The nearest thing to it is the
inverted cross oh which St. Peter
asked to be killed by his
government, because he kit
11717eAr
NakabligfigifaAir,
unworthy to die as Jesus' died,
His symbol is, today, an inverted
cross, the sign of humility before
perfect love.
The symbol's interpretation
varies from art to paranoia,
depending on the interpreter.
The real attack, of course, is
upon the peace movement, not
its symbol.
"THE BIBLE
TODAY"
In connection with the
Pope's visit to Hong Kong last
December 4th, a mass meeting
was planned at a stadium in
the city. The Bible Society pro-
duced 200,000 copies of a
Christmas Selection specially
overprinted to commemorate
the event; this was available
for distribution at the Rally
and. also at Roman Catholic
churches on the Sunday fol-
lowing the Rally, which is
observed in Hong Kong as
Bible Sunday, It meant print-
ing 200,000 copies in three
weeks, but this proved possible.
During his visit to the Philip-
pines, the Bible Society pre-
sented the Pope with a spec-
ially bound edition of one of
their new vernacular translat.
ions,
One of England's national
newspapers, the 'Daily Express'
with a readership of more
than two million, featured a
leading article on 24th Decent-
her, 1970, under the title 'How
life ought to be lived'. This
began, "At the top of the best-
seller list, far ahead of all
other books, is the New Eng-
lish Bible, It has sold more
than 2,000,000 copies in 1970.
Yet the -present age is one
apparently given over to in-
creasing disbelief." The article
goes on to talk about the fact
that church pews are sadly
empty, and yet the Christian
message still has tremendous
power, It explains the paradox
by saying that while "the form
of Christian teaching has lost
appeal, the substance remains
utterly compelling." The art-
- fele then goes on Lb assert that
"a simple guide to good behay.
lour, MI of moral recipes" is
not enough. "The Bible and its
truths alone command respect.
They have met the challenge
of the centuries. They have en,
doted when so much else has
decayed. It is this unchanging
certainty which draws people
in their millions to the Bible."
