Emergencies, big and small,
are easier to handle if you are
prepared for the possibility.
Both mental and material
preparedness are required.
Many careful drivers carry a
first aid kit in the car. It is
particularly recommended by
the Ontario Safety League for
parents who take children on
camping and picnic trips.
The National Safety Council
points out that a first aid kit can
help you in many ways. Besides
patching up personal injuries.
Here are some of the
possibilities. If the need arises,
your imagination can suggest
others.
Adhesive tape can be used to
make temporary repairs. A roll
of gauze makes a handy
substitute for string or rope to
tie something down. Greasy
salves or ointments lend
themselves nicely to emergency
lubrication.
Rubbing alcohol makes good
starter fuel for a signal fire. You
can use iodine or other
antiseptic to write an emergency
messages if your ballpoint is
back home in your suit jacket.
Ordinary baking soda - often
intended for insect bites • can
neutralize battery acid on skin
and clothing. It's also helpful
when used to snuff out a small
fire • although a very poor
substitute for an approved fire
extinguisher.
More conventional emergency
equipment may include these
items: red triangle reflector, or
flares; tow rope or chain; trouble
light with extension cord; tools;
spare fan belt; paper towels;
spare wiper blade; fuses; a pair
of battery starter cables.
Achievement
days coming
up for 4-H
The Home Economics Branch
of the Ontario Department of
Agriculture and Food is again
holding Achievement Days hi
Huron County.
This season the 95Q girls who
are participating have learned to
make summer separates, as well
as how to choose a pattern and
fabric to suit their individual
hair colouring, figure type and
personality.
Do plan to attend the
afternoon programme of the
Achievement Days in your area.
Your presence shows your
support for the young people in
your community.
