It IS possible for English
speaking Canadians to speak
freely in French.
This was proven on Friday,
April 23, when 20 high school
students from Huron County
competed in a French Public
Speaking Contest at CHSS. This
is the second such annual event,
a relatively new idea for the
county. The speeches were
designed to improve French
pronunciation and
comprehension in the students.
According to the three French
speaking and teaching judges,
these students were well up to
par.
Three winners were named

The professional sound in
modern music is hard to come
by in Clinton; but not
impossible.
Last Saturday night the
Koffee . House sponsored an
evening of music by the
Brotherhood. A crowd of about
70 young people enjoyed the
versatality and the swing of this
group.
The Brotherhood is a London
(Ontario) based group consisting
of three male guitarists and one
female singer. They are a
recently-formed group but have
played and sung in many large
cities. Specializing in gospel and
inspirational music flavored with
a touch of folk music, the

The Clinton Kinsmen Club
voted Tuesday night to endorse
plans for an Athletic Training
Program at CFB as propo'Sed by
Paul Roach and to contact local
council members and members
of Parliament to gain their
support.
Mr. Roach outlined his plans
to utilize the mens facilities,
the Sergeants Mess, and the
Sergeants apartment block. A
brief has been sent to the
Secretary of State the Hon.
Gerard Pelletier asking for
financial assistance under the
Opportunities For Youth
program by Mr. ,Roach's
organization the Canadian'
Hockey and Sport Training
School. Many of the hockey
boys in this area have been
attending the Hockey school
operated at Huron Park.
This new program will be
open to high school students
who will . be chosen by their
physical education teachers. Up
to 400 boys can be
accommodated and each boy
would receive $25 per week
during their eight weeks on the
course. Mr. Roach compared this
program to the Department of

entered in the junior and in the
senior division.
In the junior division
Monsieur Blackwell received first
kiz,e for a topic on "Paris, the
city of love", Monsieur Chariot
won second prize for a discourse
on the "French.Conadian
Culture". Third prize went to
Mademoiselle Thompson for a
lively and humorous bit about
television ads. The two boys
come from Exeter and
Mademoiselle Thompson from
Wingham.
In the senior division the
competition was tougher and the
speeches better. Mademoiselle
Tompkins lectured on discipline
at home and at school to receive
83 per cent and first place,
all over South Western Ontario.
Since their group operates on a
part-time basis (they all have
other jobs) they manage to keep
'very busy. In the near future a
television showing is planned.
Most of the "kids" there
admitted that the music was "all
right". Everyone enjoyed it one
way or another.
Hank and Beryl Gelling, hosts
of the Koffee House and
originators of the idea were
pleased with the turn-out, at a
quarter a head nobody could
afford not to come.
As Dave Hammond, lead
guitarist remarked: "It is a
method of keeping the kids off
of the street," and concerning
their folk-religious music, "We
want to give the kids something
to think about instead of drugs."
Ipperwash. The Ipperwash camp
has a budget of $500,000 and
offers summer employment to
many residents in the area.
If the plan is accepted and
the facilities used there would be
openings for cleaning and
cooking staff, In a long term
look, Mr. Roach pointed out the
possibility of sports facilities
becoming a National Training
area for many amateur sports
bodies such as hockey coaches
clinics, baseball and basketball.
During the question period
that followed, Mr. Roach was
asked by several members what
the facilities PfferecL4le replied
that the base offered one of the
best sports fields in the area
which has lights for night
softball, three diamonds, a
football and soccer area, cinder
track as well as the huge drill
hall and two swimming pools.
