Explorer group holds sale
Obituaries
daughter of the late William and
Barbara Lawson. She married
James E. Medd in 1910 and he
predeceased her. She was a
former member of Constance
United Church and was a
Member of Londesboro United
Church.
Surviving are one son, Jack of
RR 1, Clinton, and two
daughters, Mrs. Bob (Phyllis)
Johnston, Grand Valley, and
Mrs. Ray (Clete) Finch, Clinton.
One sister, Mrs. Arnold Miller of
Goderich also survives, She was
predeceased by one son, Lloyd.
Funeral services took place
from the Ball Funeral Home
Clinton on April 7, Pallbearers
were her grandsons, Bill Medd,
Leo Medd, Alan Finch, Rick
Finch, Bruce Johnston and
David Medd.
Grandsons Dennis and Jim
Medd served as pallbearers.
WILLIAM JOHN COULTIS
William John Coultis of Varna
died on April 8, 1971 in South
Huron Hospital, Exeter.
He was born on August 16,
1909 in Forest Ontario, the son
of Harvey and Ellen Coultis. In
March of 1946 he married
Dorothy Hazel Chiverton. He
had lived in Varna for 45 years
as a farmer and labourer. He was
a member of the Salvation
Army.
He is survived by one son,
John Henry Coultis of Varna
,and two daughters, Peggy
Burneau, Edmonton and Mary
Goodyear of Scarboro.
Also surviving are one
brother, Joe of London, a sister,
Mrs. Mary Tipping of
Dorchester, a niece Mrs. Mary
Fleet, Belville and four
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
from the Ball Funeral Home in
Clinton with\ the Rev. Morrison
of Varna officiating. Burial was
in Bayfield Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Al Keys,
Alex Murray, Wat Webster, Bob
Webster, Mervin Hayter and
Harvey Hayter, all of Varna.
Flowerbearers were Harry
Woolley • of Brucefield and
Carman Wright and Victor
Wright of Feversham.
Among those attending the
funeral were Earl Stubbs of
Thedford, Mr. and Mrs. Cliff
Talbot, London and Emerson
Wright, Feversham.
The Explorer group of Knox
United Church, held a successful
home bake sale and afternoon
tea last. Saturday, The sate and
tea were convened by the leaders
Mrs. Eldon McLennan and Miss
Marie Plunkett assisted by the
Explorer members.
Guests over the holiday
week-end with Mr. Robert
Chamney and Mr. and Mrs.
Gordon Chamney and family
were Mrs. Verna Doerr of
Niagara Falls, Mrs, Donald Ives,
David and Danny of Chippewa.
The Easter Thankoffering of
the United Church Women of
Knox United Church was held in
the church last Wednesday
evening. The members ,and
guests were welcomed by Mrs.
Kenneth McDougall and Mrs.
Bert Marsh and the ushers were
Mrs, Elliott Lapp and Mrs.
William Dodd: The organist for
the evening was Mrs. Gordon
Gross and she played many
Easter hymns while the guests
were arriving. After the call to
worship by the leader of her
group, Mrs. Stanley Ball, a hymn
sing was led by Mrs. Gordon
Chamney. The hymn — I know
not 'what the future holds was
sung and the scripture lesson,
John 14; 1:14 was read by Mrs.
Arthur Grange followed by
prayer by Mrs. S. Ball. The
Easter meditation was presented
in a skit form by Mrs. Maurice
Bean, Mrs. Robert Arthur, Mrs,
Arthur Grange and Mrs. James
Jackson,
Mrs. Stewart Ament of Blyth,
a former member, introduced
the guest speaker of the evening,
Mrs. Cecil Wittich of Blyth. She
followed the Lenten week
services theme — The Wondrous
Cross. She spoke on four
important points — I am the
Good Shepherd, I am the Bread
of Life, I am the Light of the
World and I am the Way: famous
speeches quoted by Jesus Christ.
Mrs. Elliott Lapp thanked the
speaker for her inspiring
message.
Guests were present from
Dungannon, Nile, Donnybrook
Dutch church, Blyth and from
the other churches in the village.
A delicious lunch was served in
the Sunday school room of the
church by the Unit in charge.

The April meeting of Kippen
U.C.W. was Visitors night,
visitors being Brucefield,
Hensall, Cullen and Varna
U.C.W.
President Mrs. Tom Reid
welcomed everyone and Mrs.
David Turner conducted an
Easter worship the theme being
"The Cross" telling of Christe
thoughts while on the cross. Mrs.
Seat, Calin di—Exeter sang two
lovely solos, accompanied by her
daughter. The guest speaker for
the evening, Miss Doreen Baker
of Grand Bend was introduced
by Mrs. Donald Stuart. Miss
Baker gave a very informative
talk of her work in Malyasia and
showed very interesting slides of
her work. She was thanked by
Mrs. Keith Love.
The evening closed with a
hymn and prayer, and everyone
gathered in the Sunday school
rooms for a social hour.
Mrs. Reid announced that a
bale would be packed in May.

J. GARNET DATAR$
J, Garnet Da tars of Hensell
died Friday, April 1911, in.
South Huron Hospital, Exeter.
He was 83 years of age.
He was born on April 11,
1888 in Hay Township, the son
of Henry Deters and Mien
Steick and resided at the
homestead at R.R. 2, Hensall,
for many years, He married the
former Ethel M, Jacobe at
Zurich on December 1, 1916.
She survives him.
He was a member of Zurich
Lutheran Church.
He is survived by "one
daughter, Mrs. Ervin (Marjorie)
Reichert, Clinton, and two
grandchildren.
Funeral services took place
Sunday, April 4, 1971, from the
Boethron Funeral Home with
the Rev. Blackwell officiating.
Interment was in Bayfield
Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Orland
Reichert, Ivan Reichert, Frank
Fields, Glen Weida, James Love
and Gordon Troyer, all
neighbours.

9, 1971, Alvin J. Fowler of
Toronto, formerly of Clinton
died in his 38th year, Beloved
son of Harry Fowler and the late
Mrs. Emma Fowler, Dear
brother of Mrs. Dynes (Edna)
Campbell of Dungannon; Mrs.
George (11a) Bancroft of.
Leamington; Mrs. Ken
(Lorraine) Scott of Brucefield;
Mrs. Jack (Lois) D'Angelo of
Arlington Heights,' III.; Mrs. Cass
(Beatrice) Zernenick of
Dearborn Heights, Michigan;
Gordon, of Goderich; Harold, of
St. Helens; Edward, of Toronto;
and Leonard, of London.
The funeral service was held
on Monday, April 12 at 3:30
p.m. from Ball Funeral Home,
Clinton, Interment was in
Clinton Cemetery with Rev.
Mulholland officiating.
Pallbearers were Doug Fowler,
Dynes Campbell, Art I3eaumann,
Ken Fowler, Manse] Fowler and
Alvin Sharp.
ANNE LOUISE MEDD
Anne Louise Medd of RR 1,
Clinton, died April 4, 1971 in
Clinton Public Hospital.
She was born on September
30, 1882, in Abilene Kansas, the
The Sunday morning Easter
Service was well attended in St.
James' Church, Middleton.
Traditional lilies, as well as
daffodils, snapdragons and
mums heralded Spring.
The Rev. E.J.B. Harrison's
sermon text was St. John 19,
"and there came also Nicodemus
and brought a mixture of myrrh
and spices for the body of
Jesus."
Mr. Harrison emphasized the
word "myrrh".
"At our Lord's nativity, the
wisemen brought gifts of gold,
frankincense and myrrh and.
after our Lord's crucifixion, the
faithful brought myrrh again for
his burial. From the star of
Bethlehem to Gethsemane, the
myrrh is emblematic of life and
also of death itself, in the trials
of life, we must never lose sight
of the Resurrection,"
The junior choir, under the
direction of Mrs, Don Middleton
and Mrs. Joseph Storey, the
organist, sang two lovely
anthems.
Flowers were placed on the
altar in loving memory of Mr,
Fred Middleton by his wife and
family; also memorial flowers in
memory of Mr, and Mrs. Will
Tebbutt of Goderich by their
niece, Mrs. Stewart Middleton.
The A.C.W. will meet
Thursday evening at 8 p.m. at
the home of Mrs. Jack Cole,
Mrs. Charles Wise of Clinton
spent Easter with Mr. and Mrs.
Ray Wise and family.
