HomeMy WebLinkAboutClinton News-Record, 1971-04-15, Page 6Clinton News-Record, Thursday, April 15, 1971 Sports Seaforth Beavers lead 01-124 series BY JAMES "NEWT" COLLINS , Seaforth Beavers whipped Cheltenham Harvesters 10-2, on Tuesday, April 6 to take a two-game lead in their QUA Intermediate "0" final series, Jack Mcllwain and Bill Weber scored two goals each to lead Seaforth; The other Beavers' goals Were scored by Ray Anstett, Art Murray, Bob Beuttenmiller, Bill McLaughlin, Terry Craig, and Ken Doig. Bob Harrison and Ed Wilton scored for Cheltenham. Seaforth — 2, 2, 6 —10 Cheltenham 1, 1, 0 — 2 Neil Sharpe fired three goalS to lead Cheltenham 'to a 9-5 victory over Seaforth in the third game 'of their OHA Intermediate "C" finals in Mayfield on Thursday, April 8, $eaforth still leads the best of seven series 2-1. Bob Harrison and Bob Neils each counted a pair of goals while singles going to Alex Smith and,Roger Enge, Jack Me'twain and Bill McLaughlin shared scoring honors for' Seaforth with two goals each, Jim Dick triggered one. Cheltenham — 6, 0, 3 — 9 Seaforth — 2, 2, 1--,5 Next games are in Seaforth, Tuesday, April 13, at 8:30 p•fn.; Thursday, April 15, at 8:30 p.m. The sixth game if necessary is in Mayfield on Sunday, April 18, at 2:00 p.m. The seventh game if necessary is in Seaforth on Tuesday, April 20 at 8:30 p.m. Tuckersmith mixed league hold banquet The Tuckersmith Mixed Bowling Club held their banquet in Huron Centennial School, Brucefield, Unit 3 of Brucefield United Church served a delicious dinner to 45 Members and guests. The meeting followed with President John Brodie presiding. The following presentations were made: Winning Team of the Season: Tony's Tigers — Tony Van Den Dool, Bill Pepper, Darc'y Rathwell, Anna Aidwinkle, Joan Grunewald, Vina Brodie. Playoff Winners: Bill's Bunnies — Bill Rogerson, Vic Hargreaves, Seldon Ross, Ruby Treibner, Estella Jackson, Winnie Van Den Dool. Ladies' High Average, JoAnne Aidwinkle; Ladies' High Triple, Betty Graham; Ladies' High Single, Anna Aidwinkle; Men's High Aveage, Tony Van Den Dool; Men's High Triple, Bill Rogerson; Men's High Single, Dave Treibner; Subs' High Average, Ron Graham; Subs' High Single, Jim Ross. A trophy was presented to most improved bowler, Joan Grunewald, and a gift to Bill Pepper, Secretary-Treasurer, Officers for next year's league are as follows: President, Tony Van Den Dool; First Vice-President, Ruby Treibner; Second Vice-President, Wes L enting; Secretary-Treasurer, May Pepper. A game of progressive euchre followed with the following winners: Ladies High; Helen Pepper; Ladies Second, May Pepper; Ladies Consolation, Martha Rooseboom; Men's High, Bill Pepper; Men's Second, Tony Van Den Dool; Men's Consolation, Wes Lenting. The Lone Hand Prize went to Cliff Henderson. Zurich. Ban tams in OMHA finals Although hockey is finished locally, that .hot Bantam squad from Zurich is still active. The Zurich team, defending Ontario E Champions meet Oakwood Friday night at Exeter at 7:15 in the championship series of the OMHA. Oakwood leads the series two games to one in the best of five series. The fifth game, if needed, will take place at Oakwood on Sunday afternoon. The Nearly New store, operated by the Clinton Lions Club opened last Saturday in the former Garrett's Shoe Store. Business was brisk even though the selection is not large as yet. Donations of clothing can be left at the store during store hours which are advertised elsewhere in this issue. The minutes of the previous executive meeting were read by the , secretary-treasurer Mrs, Graham IVIcNee of Dungannon, The presidents chose a nominating committee and prepared .the slate of officers which will be installed at the annual meeting held this year on May 31st at Londesboro. A letter from Mrs, Stanley Cook of Belgrave resigning from the office of vice-president was received with regret. Mrs, Wilfred Colelough of Clinton was named the convener of a committee to get tokens and small gifts for the London Area Convention to be held on September 30 and October 1st in Clinton. It was announced that Miss Helen McKercher, director, of the Home Economics service will be guest speaker at the Londesboro meeting. Kinkead and Zone Chairman Maurice Jenkins, both of Goderich, inducted five new members into the Clinton Lions Club Tuesday evening. , The new members, Capt. Cecil Mason, Harry Merriman, Eric Collins, John Wise, and Sgt. Leroy Oesch were told by Mr. Kinkead that the strength of any organization is determined by the enthusiasm of its new members and by their dedication in undertaking community projects. These include work for the Crippled Children and the blind members of the community and country. Lion President Laurie Colquhoun announced that the local Crippled Children's Easter Seal Campaign has passed the $1000 mark but still has some • way to go before fulfilling its objective. The province as a whole is lagging behind last year's effort. If this is not rectified there will have to be a serious cutback in help to crippled children. Acting Lions President George Levis announced that the "Lions Nearly New Clothing Store" had a very successful opening on Saturday, but still requires the co-operation of all in supplying good clean clothing. The guest speaker for the evening was Miss Anne Barwell, :Pahtie, Relations, Officer of the; Telephone Company. She gave a delightful illustrated talk on "The Bruce Trail," a 430 mile nature lovers' paradise which stretches along the most picturesque countryside from Niagara to Tobermory. house logs.
