BERT SHOBBROOK led in saying Promise. Cub John Hyde told the story of Lord Baden-Powell. Cubs John O'Bright, Michael Overholt, Trent. Shobbrook, Michael Penfound, David Lear, Calvin Lovett, Danny Jewitt, Paul Middigaal and Gary Shepherd showed the parents how to tie the different knots and explained the use of these knots. Cub Leader Stan McDonald explained to the parents the Cub program and the program being followed as well as proposed program until end of season in June. Cub Leader Jeff Hyde spoke on Cub camping and plans being made for overnight camp trip for the boys. Cub Robert Hunking was presented with his toymaker's badge and each Cub with their official membership card. The Red Wolves received highest points during the month. The Yellow Wolves led in closing the meeting. WOMEN'S INSTITUTE The Women's Institute fiefd their meeting April 1 in the hall. The meeting opened with Opening Ode, Mary Stewart Collect and 0 Canada. The president Mrs. Gourley welcomed all. The secretary read the minutes, gave the treasurer's report and correspondence. An invitation from Summerhill Club to a dessert euchre on April 28 and one from Blyth Ladies Agricultural Society for a dessert euchre and bazaar on April 14 were received. A letter from Mrs. Davies on membership drive for Clinton Hospital. It was moved to send $25 covering all the WI members. Ten dollars was donated to Blyth Agriculture Fall Fair for prizes. We are to have Huronview Birthday Party for October. There was discussion on price of catering, $2 for turkey, $2.25 for beef or pork. Institute to pay the rent for hall. The roll call was answered by 18 present. The annual reports were given by the secretary-treasurer, auditors and conveners of standing committees followed by installation of new officers by Mrs. T. Allen. The convener of the nominating committee, Mrs. B. Shobbrook, gave the following report: past president, Mrs. E. Josling; president, Mrs. W. Gourley; first vice-president, Mrs. E. Anderson; second vice-president, Mrs. R. Meeting closed and lunch was served by hostesses Mrs. H. Tebbutt, Mrs. B, Riley and Mrs. a Leitch, Forty members of the' Women's Institute attended the Sunshine Sister Banquet held on Wednesday evening, March 31, at Winthrop Church. Mrs. Gourley thanked the ladies for the lovely turkey dinner. Mrs. E. Josling presented a gift to Mrs. Gourley for past year's work as president. There were six ladies received gifts for perfect attendance: Mrs. J. Armstrong, Mrs. D. Buchanan, Mrs. Gourley, Mrs. W. Howatt, Mrs. G. Robinson and Mrs. H, Snell. Mrs. Bill Campbell and Mrs. George Townsend accompanied by Mrs. Stewart sang several duets. All were from Seaforth. Mrs. Rimmer of Seaforth demonstrated making flowers with liquid transparent plastic. There was a discussion on the time of next year's meetings. It was moved they be held the second Wednesday at 8 p.m. each month. This was followed by revealing of the Sunshine Sisters and paying fees. Names were drawn for next year. Mrs. Gourley thanked the committee, Mrs. E. Anderson, Mrs. R. Dalton and Mrs. Buchanan, for the lovely evening. EXPLOR ERS The Londesboro Explorers met after school on April 1. President Kathy Lyon opened the meeting with the Explorer Purpose. Pianist Kathy Hunking led the group in two new songs. Mrs. Glousher read an Easter Story The minutes were read by Cathy Peel and Kathy Penfound gave the treasurer's report. Nineteen members answered the roll call. A cookie sale and a graduation party were discussed. Donna Johnston, Nancy Fothergill and Barbara Glousher received stars. The meeting closed with the Explorer Prayer and Joan Mason and Linda Johnston led a brief period of recreation. EUCHRE There were nine tables in play at the hall board euchre on Friday night with prizes going to: high lady, Mrs. Mac Sewers; lone hands, Mrs. Myrtle Fairservice; ladies low, Mrs. R. Gibbings; men's high, Mark Kennedy; men's lone hands, Leonard Shobbrook; men's low, Norman Wright. The door prize, Belleville will host the Ontario Open Chess Championship Mr. S. Parry president of the Quinte Chess Club announced today. The Ontario Open Championship is the largest annual tournament held in the province and this year is expected to draw well over 200 competitors from throughout North America. The six round event will be played on May 22, 23 and 24 at Belleville's new Ben Bleeker Auditorium. Walter Dobrich one of Canada's foremost players and a noted chess authority will direct the tournament. First prize is a $350 cash award with numerous other prizes offered for players of all donated by Mr, and Mrs. Robt. Thompson, was won by Mrs. Les Reid. There will be anothel euchre in two weeks, April 16. SHOWER The neighbours on Concession 13 West held a shower on Thursday night, April 1, for Miss Marie McDougall, bride-elect, at the home of Mrs. Henry flunking, Bernice and Shirley. Co-hostesses were Mrs. Ted flunking and Mrs. Leonard Archambault. Miss Shirley Hunking conducted a contest wpn by Mrs. Stewart Ament, Mrs. Ted Hunking conducted one won by Mrs. Bert Lyon and Donna ' Longman. Marie was given the chair of honour. An address was read by Mrs. Ted Hunking and gifts presented by Kathy and Cheryl Lyon. Marie thanked all for the gifts and invited them to come and see them in their home in Auburn. There were 30 present. PERSONALS Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gaunt spent a couple of days with his sister and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Ward Shickluna, of Mississauga. Mrs. Bert Brunsden visited with Mr. Bert Brunsden in Westminster Hospital, London, on Monday, March 29, and found him much improved. Mrs. Bert Brunsden left Friday morning, April 2, for a month's visit with her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Don Napier of Dallas, Texas. Mrs. Fairservice and Ann spent 1% weeks with Mr. and Mrs. David Fairservice and Maureen of Dollard Des Ormeaux, Quebec. Mrs. M. Dalrymple, Judy and Susan of Brucefield visited with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gaunt, last Sunday, March 28. Mrs. Joe Shaddick went into Seaforth Hospital for minor surgery on Monday. Miss Pat Burns of Toronto spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Burns. Mrs. Ross Millson, Sheryl and Patricia of Woodstock visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Shobbrook, Sunday afternoon. Sympathy is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Penfound in the loss of her father, Mr. Harold Fremlin of Clinton. Brucefield Mrs. P. Adams is visiting for a few weeks with her daughter Mrs. ,Eric Haite, Toronto. Firemen were called on Thursday afternoon to a fire at the farm of Howard Allan when a shed and contents was completely destroyed. Mr. and Mrs. R. Mason, Windsor, were recent visitors at Mrs. Mason's parents Mr. and Mrs. L. Wilson. Mrs, Max Tully, Mr. and Mrs. Don Tully, Peterborough, were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Greg. McGregor. Mr. and Mrs. John Broadfoot spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Broadfoot Sr. Mr, and Mrs. Stanley Neale, London, visited last week with Mrs. Neale's sister Mrs. Mac Wilson and Mr. Wilson. Mr. and Mrs. Elliott Layton returned home on Sunday, having spent the winter in Florida. Mr. Wm. Burdge of Camp Borden spent the weekend with his family. Kippen United Church was filled on Sunday morning for Holy Communion and the reception of new members on Sunday morning, conducted by the Rev. E. D: Stuart. The following members were admitted to the church: by transfer, Mrs. R. Grunewald, Bnicefield and Mrs. David Cooper, Kippen; by profession, Deborah Jean Aikenhead, Debra Dawn Brodie, Sharon Ann Brodie, Marion Elizabeth Hill, Donald Glen McGregor, and Randal Stuart Wilson, all of Brucefield; John Ross Kinsman, and Janice Lynn Turner, Kippen. Next Sunday will be an Easter service at Kippen Church at 11:00 a.m. The Londesboro United Church was filled to capacity on Sunday evening for a special service of Confirmation and First Communion for 19 candidates for church membership. Those being received were Lois Anne Beacom, Larry Kenneth,Carter, Judy Lynn Howatt, Vaughn Elizabeth Flunking, Kevin Wayne Jewitt, Barbara Louise Lovett, Ethel Doreen Mason, Reta Faye Mason, Ruthanne McGregor, Allan Benton Peel, Michael Dennis Penfound, Gerald Stanley Riley, Janette Suzzanne Riley, Karen Elizabeth Shepherd, John Morley Shepherd, JoAnne Matguerite Snell, Richard William Snell, Kenneth Albert Scanlon and Mary Lou Ann Vincent. Special music was provided by the organist Mrs. Harry Lear and the pianist Mrs. T. B. Allen with Miss Betty Snell singing "The Lord's Prayer" and Harry Lear "Hear Our Prayers." During the Laying on of Hands the choir sang "Lead Me" as well as the Hebrew Benediction. Elders taking part in the Laying on of Hands were Mrs. Ella Jewitt, Mrs. John Riley and Messrs. Lorne Hunking, Jim Jamieson, Bert Shobbrook, Jack Tamblyn, Norman Alexander, Earl Gaunt, John Jewitt, Lloyd Pipe, Henry Hunking, Reg. Lawson, Jack Lee, Don Buchanan, Harry Snell and Nick Whyte. Clerk of session Jim Jamieson assisted Rev. McDonald in presentation of Bibles and Certificates. Following the service a Reception was held in the church hall with the UCW in charge under leadership of Mrs. David Anderson. Pouring the tea were Mrs. 'Wilfred Penfound and Mrs. John Armstrong representing the grandmothers of the candidates and Mrs. John Riley and Mrs. Ella Jewitt, members of session, representing the congregation. The Sanctuary was decorated with pots of mums and ferns. Each candidate wore a red rose. The ushers were four members of 1970 confirmation class, Lyle Adams, Larry Lovett, Murray Hunking and Stewart Glousher. Flowers presenting fly up Brownies with Brownie wings and Golden Hands. Also proficiency badges were handed out to Terri Garrow, (swimmers) and Margot Menzie (skiers and swimmers). The girls who flew up to Guides were presented with a compass donated by the Legion (Mr. Harry Crich) who are our sponsors. The girls made up their own program. 4th CLINTON BROWNIE PACK By Nancy Hearn • We met at the usual time and started out with a game called Snail Snail. Then Mary Cantelon, our new helper, suggested we do semaphore. First we called out the letters then we were numbered from A to G. After that we went to our six corners and then we went into the fairy ring. After that the Tweenies went with Packie and Gray Owl, and the Brownies went with Brown Owl and Tawny Owl to make placecards with a Hooter on the front for the Mother and Daughter Banquet. After we finished that it was time to go home, BY THE ORIOLE PATROL On Monday, April 5, the 2nd Girl Guide Company met at the Wesley-Willis United Church. First the girls went downstairs. The older girls learned how to do knots, while the younger ones did their tenderfoot work. Then we went into horseshoe and discussed some business. After horseshoe we went upstairs where we had inspection and Kim's game, followed by camp fire and songs. We then closed with Taps. ASSOCIATION MEETS The Group Committee of the local Guide-Brownie Association met last Tuesday, March 30, to arrange for the annual pot luck supper. Tickets will be available at Guides and Brownies for the next two weeks or from Mrs. Corbett. We would like all tickets spoken for by April 21. Some discussion was also given as to the date and place for a bake sale.
