Answer: precisely the equivalent of the Canadian population at any given moment, In other words, everyone is a consumer from birth to death, And that is the whole point of Consumer Week in Canada which was from March 1-6 this year. Consumers' Association of Canada (CAC) sponsors this week to highlight the fact that consumers are the economy itself. Without them there would be no economy. CAC is the only organized body of consumers which represents everyone in contacts with governments and industry. Since it was formed in 1947 it has brought about changes in labelling of drugs, household chemicals, children's clothing, fabrics and foods, as well as being instrumental in the introduction of consumer protective legislation. This year the 65,000-member organization is offering leadership in rejection of non-returnable beverage containers which CAC consider a major land pollutant in the nation, This view was being emphasized during Consumer Week in addition to the slogan, "Consumers Count!" In announcing the campaign, MARMALADES ST, WILLIAMS ASSORTED JAMS, JELLIES AND 25 IR. BAD BY SHIRLEY J. KELLER it." Did you see the way Trudeau behaved in front of the television cameras in company with his new bride? I tell you, it was almost like watching a love story. The man obviously adored his wife and yet there wasn't one gushy, nervous or over-zealous gesture to show it, I don't know. Somehow it was in his eyes and in his manner of movement. He was conscious of her at his side and yet he was completely at ease, as though this was the way things were meant to be. There was a picture in one of the dailies of Pierre Elliott Trudeau going home from the House of Commons for his lunch. Even this brought out the goose-bumps on a great many women I know. It's true. "I wonder what she had cooked up?" one girl wondered. "I wonder if they even ate at all," came one gal's thoughts, You see? It, is perfectly clear from those comments that the Canadian women do not consider Pierre Elliott Trudeau a stodgy old fellow with a too-young bride. Indeed not. There is ample evidence that this nation's women think of the Prime Minister as a virile he-man who would please any woman he would choose to make his wife. It is also plain that women — maybe even some men, too — think of Pierre as a human being, a flesh and blood creature who loves and has deep feelings just like the rest of us. Add this new side of Pierre to his recent outburst of "fuddle-duddle" in the House, and you have a picture of a man with whom anyone can identify .„.. and will. He's the first Prime Minister this country has ever had who behaves like the average man yet thinks and produces like a natural statesman. He's the Canadian copy of the late John F. Kennedy .... man first and an administrator second, yet completely in harmony with the masses, Congratulations, Mr, and Mrs. P. E. Trudeau. May your love endure beyond all else. MARcli PERM SPECIAL pring's the Time for a New You LEG OF PORK EFFECTIVE T0 STORE CLOSING, SATORDAY, MARCH / S 1 f u l rom my window If you were wagering that this columnist would miss the opportunity to talk about PET's marriage, you have lost. I haven't been so utterly thrilled about anything for a long, long time and there is just no way that I will be still 4out the wedding of PET and Meg. Those of you who read this column faithfully will know that I am a Trudeau supporter. True, I was cold to the prime minister at first. It took me a while to learn to trust him, but now I am possessed of Trudeau-mania and I'm proud of it. I don't really know how to express my feelings about Pierre's marriage except to say that I'm tingling all over just thinking about it. No, not that kind of tingling. It's just the I'm-so-excited brand that comes over one when you feel that you are on the threshold of something wonderful. It has occurred to me since Pierre's marriage that we are just now about to learn what a real swinger our 'Prime Minister really is. Any fellow who can court a young lady as lovely as Margaret Sinclair right under the noses of the Canadian press and actually marry her in a church in one of Canada's most up-to-the-minute cities without one word of rumor or gossip to spoil it, is certainly a man of rare talents I'd say. I couldn't believe my ears when I heard the word. I really thought Trudeau was one of those perennial bachelors who would always be an escort but never a groom. Somehow I thought of him as a man who enjoyed the companionship of women without desiring the marital ties that accompany a permanent arrangement. But when I came to the realization that this man actually wooed and won the lovely Meg — and had chosen to make her his bride in a carefully planned, qUiet but romantic ceremony with only a few close relatives and friends present — I was ready to cry. As one girl said, "It's almost like a fairy tale, isn't turn roast a couple of times. Then drain the roast and pat dry. Strain the marinade and reserve, To oven roast: Preheat Oven to 32$ degrees. Brush' frequently with reserved marinade. Make gravy with pan drippings, using marinade as part of the liquid, if desired. Add sauteed sliced mushrooms to the gravy. To pot roast: Melt one third cup butter or margarine in a Dutch oven or deep heavy saucepan. Add marinated roast and brown nicely on all sides over moderate heat; drain off drippings. Season roast with salt and add 1 cup of the reserved marinade, Cover tightly and simmer over low heat until very tender and well done; 35 to 40 minutes per pound for a loin roast, 45 to 50 minutes per pound for a fresh ham or shoulder roast, Add more marinade, if needed, during cooking. Remove to heated platter and keep hot. Make cream gravy with pan liquids and add sauteed sliced mushrooms. Note: To make cream gravy, combine 1 tablespoon of flour and V4 cup cream for each cup of pan liquids. Make sure there are no lumps. Add to pan liquids; cook and stir until thickened. AY LMER CREAM OF MUSHROOm AND OTHER VARIET IES SOUPS CAC president Jean M. Jones said that for the past few years the organization's emphasis during Consumer Week in Canada has concentrated upon consumer education and co-operation with industry and governments, This year, she continued, "We hope to demonstrate the real power of organized consumers across Canada by exerting purchasing pressure against non-returnable beverage containers. The CAC president, in calling attention to the Association's long-standing requests for legislation to ban non-returnable beverage containers, stated: "We feel that banning of non-returnable glass containers solely, would be an unfair competitive advantage to the manufacturers of cans, resulting in the probable increase of canned beverage containers, without solving the basic problem." It was pointed out that CAC's objection to non-returnable beverage containers included beer, wine and spirits containers and not only soft drinks. The Association's basic recommendation is that legislation is required for beverages to be sold in standard returnable containers, with a significant deposit which will ensure their return.
