BY MRS. GRACE MIDDLETON
It was a magnificent concept,
but it didn't quite come off! We
refer to the theme of the
Toronto Garden Club's Flower
Show, "Flowers Through The
Ages".
As we entered the huge,
high-vaulted dark expanse of the
Royal Ontario Museum,
Toronto, we expected to be
stopped short in our tracks by a
mammoth skeletal dinosaur with
opulent orange and purple
blooms held in his primeval
teeth and adorning his dorsal
apertures, nooks and crannies,
instead a very chaste, white
Statue of Aphrodite, goddess of
lovers, sat squarely on a display
of gorgeous hyacinths.
Thousands of winter-jaded,
galoshened Canadians viewed the
almost instant-spring display.
Many were heard to say that
they preferred the O'Keefe
settings of former years, with
the auditorium banked with
thousands of blooms and Curly
Posen's band holding forth.
And yet as we viewed the
eleven gardens "evolved through
the years" it was evident that
the club and museum curators
had done intensive research to
present an artistic authentic
picture "The Natural Garden".
The Sugar Bush was pure
nostalgic Canadiana and

The Medieval Herb Garden
with its wattle fencing was the
most subtle, aromatic and
symbolic.
There was an Italian Baroque
Garden, formal and
architectural.
The Alhambra Garden, Court
of the Lions, Grenada, Spain,
had 12 stone lions around a
fountain. This one was based on
one of the oldest gardens in the
world and the original lions
spouted water.
The English Rose Garden was
most fresh, most familiar and
most fragrant.
The Rose is mentioned 2737
B.C. in Chinese gardens. The
Chinese Garden at the show was
fascinating, "Beauty Without
Order". The use of common
weeping tiles upended provided
a natural border.
The Keukenhof Garden, the
Grotto Garden, The French
Parterre Garden and Mexico

Downstairs three special films
were shown and Curly Posen's
depleted group played familiar
songs.
After this heady breath of
spring, the busload returned to

in Huron County. We knew we
had gotten home — weather as
usual.

Miss Sylvia Wilson taught the
girls two new games. The
meeting was closed by Miss Mary
Ann Kalbfleisch.
