Phone: 4624322 "BILL" TOMKINS 0 Clinton News-Record, Thursday, March 11, 1971 Plenty of suspense at Bantam tournament championships Clinton Bantam Hockey Tournament couldn't be faulted for lack of suspense on Sunday afternoon for its championship series. First there was the suspense of whether or not the participating teams would be able to get to the arena through the furious storm that began that morning. Strangely it was the teams from such far away places as Whitby and Bowmanville that made It while teams closer to home such as Zurich and Paisley didn't even try. Perhaps it was because, living in the snow belt, they knew the kind of storm they could expect. As it was, three of the six scheduled championships were played with the others, hopefully, to be played this weekend. And all three of the games that were played were as exciting as a Stanley Cup final. Each was *Acted by a single goal, one lnos)vertime and one featuring a coriieAfebin-behind in the final two minutes. Waterford. started things off by squeezing by Ridgetown 4-3. It was a see-saw affair. Waterford went ahead 1-0 in the first on a goal by Bill Ball, but Ridgetown came back to tie BY ANDRE AMS1NG As Central Huron entered into WOSSA competition last Friday, few thought the Redmen could defeat a team from any other conference. But for the first time in many peoples' memory, a Huron-Perth team made it to the semi-final. In fact Goderich defeated Medway and Clinton defeated Sarnia Central for unprecedented performances. Clinton had the game tied at 30-30 at half time but fell behind by up to seven points many times in the third and forth quarter. Finally in the last two minutes, the Redmen closed in with several baskets. The score was 58-56 in Sarnia's favour. A time-out was called by Clinton to set up a fast break. the game at 7:23 when Blair Harden scored. Waterford scored again with 16 seconds left, but with just over a minute left in the second, Ridgetown came back. Blair Cloet scored for Waterford and Doug Button for Ridgetown. At 3:15 of the third, Waterford again took the lead only to have Ridgetown tie it up on David Brackett's goal two minutes later., James Bowen gave Waterford the lead and David Brackett tied the score. But Cloet gave Waterford the lead again with 11 minutes remaining and they hung on for the win. Ridgetown players were sure they had tied the game when they scored just at the end of the game, but the goal came about two seconds after the buzzer sounded and they were too excited to hear it, Most of the rink-side experts called it a major upset when Huron East came from behind in the final two minutes to beat Whitby 3-2. Whitby had impressed everyone earlier in their wins over Oakridges and Georgetown, while Huron East had looked flat earlier in the day losing to a midget-bolstered Clinton team in exhibition play Sarnia had a man at the foul line who missed his shot. The rebound was picked off the hoop, thrown to a wing and then to Cord Lavis who scored with six seconds left in the game. An overtime period of three minutes was called. Clinton's Andre Amsing scored two quick field goals but Sarnia evened up the score. Finally Pete Cameron and Rick Dubler each made a foul shot to clinch the game. Pete Cameron and Andre Amsing got 20 points apiece while Cord Lavis scored 16 in the well played game. The next game was against London's Beal Raiders who played a quick aggressive game. Central Huron looked tired and fell 81-42. Pete Cameron got 18 points, Dick Jewson seven and Gord Lavis six. when the Orillia team was unable to get to the tournament because of the weather. But Pat Riggin, the 11 year old son of for'mer Detroit Red Wing goaltender 'Dennis Riggin, put on a spectacular display of goaltending wizardry and Whitby didn't have their usual spark, perhaps because of the long bus ride through the storm. Huron East took a lead at 12:10 of the second period after a goaltenders' duel in the first kept both teams scoreless. The long looping shot from outside the blueline by Tim Whitehead bounced off goalie Tom Connelly's chest and over his shoulder, But Whitby came back and seemed to take command in the Randy Millar's breakaway goal with only two minutes and 15 seconds left in the third period gave Clinton a win in the first game of their round Robin series with Goderich and Seaforth. The win was the second this year over Goderich and if Clinton is to win the round Robin they must defeat the strong Goderich' club. Goderich will be back in Clinton Thursday night at 7:30. In the early stage of the game Clinton had several good scoring chances but their shots missed the net. Goderich tried out Dean Ryan on some tough shots and he caught them or kicked them out. Thirty-seven seconds into the second period Lee Arbour drilled a hard slapshot from the blue line, Ryan caught it but it flipped out of his glove and into the net. Two minutes. later Clinton took advantage of a power play with Billy Irwin slapping in a shot from the point. Minnie MacDonald and Steve Cook set the play up. At the beginning of the third period Gerald "Crow" Cantelon gave Mike Palmer one of the third. At 9;55 Ken Clark on an assist from Garth Bush finally beat Riggin who had stymied them to that point. Then at 16;38 Whitby seemed to have the game wrapped .up when Bush scored again after picking up his own rebound and being left unmolested in front of Riggin, But then at 18:31 Clifford Atkinson and Brian Randall combined to tie the score for Huron East and with just 12 seconds left Randall scored from Atkinson to give Huron East the win. Bath goals were scored from bad angles when Connelly pulled away from his goalpost just enough for the puck to be jammed in. most beautiful body 'checks given out this year. Seconds later the two who normally are very meek and mild went at each other in front of Clinton's net. The fight came as a complete shock to all the Clinton club and from then on the Fish and Garners had a little extra drive in them. 'Clinton went ahead at 11:22 of the third on another shot from the point. This time Irwin flipped a rink wide pass to Cameron whose wicked shot was deflected into the net by Randy Millar, Two defensive lapses midway into the period put Goderich ahead 3-2. Thirty seconds tater Irwin again was set by Cameron for a shot from the blue line. Millar's winner came a minute and 30 seconds after lrwin's tying goal. The club with the most points after the home and home round robin meets Zurich for the Bantam A Series Championship for Zone 1. Clinton's schedule is: Monday, March 8, Seaforth at Clinton (cancelled); Thursday, March 11, 7:30 Goderich at Clinton; Clinton at Seaforth, Wednesday, March 17. The Thornhill-Bowmanville match was a fitting wrap-up for ane 30 minutes xeiting afterlwonneitheForr mare than could get past the others goaltender to score a goal, The Thornhill team was bigger and favoured by most to win but were outplayed most of the way and seemed afraid to shoot. Finally they scored with less than three minutes remaining and appeared to have the championship in their grasp as Dan Somers popped the goal in on an assist from David CD Bowmanville stormed backBurtmutaendaliticehde'the score only 31 seconds later on a goal from Dennis Bamber with the assist going to Byron Holmes. The score remained tied when regulation time elapsed. The five-minute overtime period was also scoreless and since it was the last game of the tournament it was decided to let the teams go on to sudden-death instead of the rather unsatisfactory arrangement of deciding a championship on shots-on-goal (even the shots were even anyway). Bowmanville put the game away at. 3:50 of • the second Overtime period with a goal by Ernie Tcheuehi. Gary Smith gained the assist. In action Thursday night, Zurich defeated Ilderton 6-=-1. in "E" while Ridgetown beat Lambeth 3-1. Friday night Belmont eliminated Lucknow 4-2 in "D" play. ,Saturday afternoon Thornhill beat Saltfleet 7-0 and Paris won 7-1 over Bayridges in "A" play. In "C" Waterford beat Mooretown 7--2 and in "B" Listowel beat Hanover 5-4. Thornhill and Paris had to go in to overtime and even then it was shots on goal that won the game for Thornhill in a 4-4 contest. Walkerton overwhelmed Listowel 7-1 in "B" play. Thornhill beat Stoneybrook 5-4 to advance to the finals in a game in "A" action on Sunday morning. Orillia was unable to get to Clinton so Huron East won by default and played Clinton in exhibition. Clinton won 3-1 with the help of a couple of Midget players. It was an odd sight Sunday afternoon to see Pat Riggin getting as much protection from his teammates as here. The 11-year-old withstood a bombardment from the Whitby team and kept Huron East in the game so they could come from behind in the last two minutes to win the "AA" championship. Even when Whitby shooters managed to get the puck by Pat Riggin in the Huron East nets during the AA championship game at the Clinton Bantam tournament, the shot usually missed the net. Here Riggin, son of former NHL goaltender Dennis Riggin, outmaneuvres Doug Lay (no. 5) and another unidentified Whitby player as they were in alone on him, Redmen make WOSSA history Weather — yes the lousy weather of the past two Sundays has prevented the many hockey fans from this area from seeing some great hockey at the Bantam Tournament. Sunday three of the most thrilling games ever played in our new centre were played for the "C", A and double "AA" championships. All three games were decided in the final minutes with "A" championship between Thornhill and Bowmanville going into five minutes overtime with the shots tied then a thrilling 10 minutes of end to end [talon before Thornhill finally scored the winner. The people from Bowmanville, Whitby, Watford, Huron East and Ridgetown travelled through the storm on SundaN, and went back home again. Waterford and Thornhill had stayed overnight at the local hotels. The hockey committee are hoping to have the 'to and "B" finals next weekencliprohably Sunday afternoon or evening. * * * This weekend the Dcarbdrri Bantams will be here in Clinton for several games against the "A" and "B" Bantam teams. The boys will be busy as our Grade 8 boys on the "A" club have a party Friday evening at the Public School then travel to Goderich Saturday for Volleyball Tournament. • * Our We Wee club have been invited to play in the Blyth Minor Hockey Weekend this Saturday. The team which will be playing there travelled to Blyth last Wednesday and won the game 3-0. David Clifford, John 0:Bright and Ivan Fleming scored the three goals while Jeff Ball earned his first. shutout. * * Last week in Any column a little gremlin found its way into my description of Pete tattletort and Cord Lavis emirate foul shooting, the typist thought the word was cheating. Ken Reidy's crew tan be really proud of their show at the WOSSA Championships when they gained the semi.finals after winning a thriller over Sarnia.
