that it is as dangerous to operate
a snowmobile as an automobile
while in an intoxicated
condition.
Furthermore, when
snowmobilers are using public
thoroughfares where most of
these impaired ability accidents
take place, driving provisions of
the Criminal Code apply to them
just the same as the car driver.
This means a snowmobiler may
be required to take a
breathalyzer test and can be
charged with impaired driving. If
convicted, the court has the
authority to prohibit the
operator from using a
snowmobile on any highway in
Canada.

This is a most appropriate
time to bring out that timeless
warning to car drivers about not
mixing alcohol and gasoline. The
same advice is just as apt for
that gas and oil mixture used in

as a snowmobiler has to use
considerable balance and body
action to safely control his
machine which affords him little
or no protection in a collision or
turnover.
The Ontario Safety League
claims impaired ability has been
a contributing factor in a high
percentage of snowmobile
accidents in Ontario in the past
few years. Many fatalities
involved operators who were too
drunk to realize what they were
doing or to control their
machines. These are not pleasant
incidents to recall, but they are
facts which can be documented,
